Third Person's Point Of View

"What is this?" Darcelle muttered to herself aloud, her voice tinged with confusion as she slowly scanned her surroundings, her eyes narrowing in an attempt to understand what was happening.

The silence around her felt strangely heavy, and her heart beat a little faster with a growing sense of unease.Full novel: Death's Favorite Daughter [Cursed • Werewolf • Academy • Dark Fantasy] — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

She extended her palm out, hoping to feel something, anything, that might offer an explanation.

And then, there it was—just for a split second.

A shimmering, translucent shield-like bubble, almost as if it were a mirage, but real. It covered the mountain from where she stood, its edges glowing faintly with an otherworldly energy.

Her breath caught in her throat, the sight of it both mesmerizing and alarming.

The bubble seemed to ripple slightly, as though it could shift or react to her presence.

She reached out tentatively, running her fingers along its surface. It was smooth to the touch, but there was an undeniable resistance to it, as if she was touching something that shouldn’t be touched, something that had its own will.

"Is it... everywhere?" Darcelle murmured, her voice filled with disbelief. She took another step forward, her fingertips lightly tracing the boundary of the shimmering shield, searching for any sign of an opening. "You mean there’s no way in?"

The frustration in her voice grew, mingled with a growing sense of urgency.

She needed to get through.

She needed to reach Mr. Jethro’s cottage. "How could something like this exist?" she asked herself.

She continued to prod at the surface of the bubble, her hands moving across it as though it were a puzzle to solve. She wasn’t giving up. "How will I get to Mr. Jethro, then?" Her thoughts spiraled, and before she could fully consider the situation, she pushed harder against the bubble, willing herself to find a way through.

To her surprise, it didn’t give way. Instead, it resisted her efforts like an elastic band stretched too far, sending a shock of force back into her. She staggered backward, off balance, but caught herself just in time to keep from falling. Her heart pounded in her chest, and she steadied herself. "Okay. That didn’t work."

She thought quickly, her mind racing for a solution. “Maybe... maybe if I run from farther away and hit it with more force, I can break through. Or maybe... force my way in?” She spoke to herself as if trying to convince herself that there was still a chance. She moved back from the shield, giving herself more space.

With a deep breath, she sprinted towards it; the wind rushing in her ears. She could feel the ground beneath her feet, the power in her legs as she built up momentum. This time, she was determined—there was no way that a shield could stop her. "I’ll break through," she thought, as she drew closer. She reached the bubble and collided with it full force.

The impact was nothing like she expected. Instead of a crack or opening, the bubble resisted her body as if it were made of solid stone. The force of the blow sent her flying backwards, the air knocked out of her lungs. Her body twisted midair before crashing hard into a bed of rose bushes behind her.

Thorns dug deep into her skin, the sharp pain a fleeting sensation.

But before her werewolf instincts could take over, before the familiar tingling warmth of her healing ability could kick in, she noticed something chilling.

A drop of her blood fell onto the roses, and the moment it touched the petals, the flowers began to wilt. The vibrant colors faded instantly, and the once-lush blooms curled and shriveled up, as though her blood had poisoned them.

Darcelle stared in shock at the decaying roses, unable to comprehend what she had just witnessed. She quickly examined her hand where the thorns had pricked her, only to find that the injury had already vanished. Her werewolf healing had kicked in too quickly, but it didn’t matter. The roses were ruined, and there was no undoing that.

“Well,” she thought, the weight of her situation settling in. "It seems like I won’t be able to get to Mr. Jethro’s cottage, after all."

The finality of her words hung in the air as she looked around, a sense of helplessness creeping over her. She had tried everything, and the mountain still stood in her way.

Her stomach growled loudly, pulling her thoughts away from her failure. She glanced down at the ground, and then off towards the side of the mountain, where the familiar path to the stream wound its way down. "I’m thirsty... and hungry..." The thought was simple, yet grounding.

She couldn’t keep dwelling on her failure.

She needed to take care of herself.

With a heavy sigh, she stood up, brushing off the remnants of the wilted rose petals that clung to her clothes. Her gaze softened, the frustration in her eyes fading into something more practical as she turned toward the stream.

She knew the path well.

It would lead her to fresh water, and from there, she could find something to eat.

The stream ran down the mountain, feeding into the lake below and eventually into the river that flowed toward the village. It was a long walk, but the thought of being near water brought some comfort.

As she made her way toward the mountain’s edge, the sense of finality began to lift. There would be other ways, other plans. The bubble might have stopped her for now, but Darcelle wasn’t one to give up easily. She would find another way to get to Mr. Jethro—or, at the very least, figure out what this strange shield was and how to break through it.

Change Of Scene

Meanwhile, back at Adolphus Noble School, the atmosphere was charged with anticipation as Icarus returned, soaring through the sky with the ease of someone who had already claimed their victory.

His wings stretched wide, the sunlight glinting off the feathers, casting a golden glow as he soared above the students below. His graceful flight was a spectacle, drawing the eyes of every student who happened to be outside at the time.

There was a collective gasp as he effortlessly glided, his wings cutting through the air with precision. The younger students looked up in awe, some pointing, some whispering excitedly to each other.

But it was the girls who were most captivated, their eyes following him with a mixture of admiration and something deeper—a longing that they couldn't quite shake.

It wasn't just his appearance, though he was undeniably handsome with his sharp features and confident aura. It was the raw power he exuded, the untamed strength that came with being a Lycan, and the unmistakable aura of someone destined for greatness.

They knew the rules of Adolphus Noble School well—relationships were strictly prohibited, especially among the students, as the focus was always supposed to remain on their education and their training.

Yet, despite that, they couldn’t help but fantasize about him.

Who could resist?

He was a living embodiment of power and beauty, a creature so captivating that even the school’s rigid structure couldn't fully tame the admiration he inspired.

Icarus had just returned from passing the grueling test set by Master Matthias, a test that not only required great physical prowess but also the fortitude to prove himself worthy of the position he was about to claim.

Now, as he descended towards the ground, his heart swelled with pride.

Today was a monumental day—today, he would take his place as the new leader of the Tatanise Pack and the master of Adolphus Noble School. A legacy of strength and authority that would now be his to carry forward.

Master Matthias, the current leader, had completed his own journey and now, with Icarus’ success, he would retreat into seclusion in the mountains to continue his personal werewolf cultivation.

In the grand hall of Adolphus Noble School, the atmosphere was electric.

The senior students and the pack members had gathered, all eager for the ceremony to begin.

The long hall was filled with anticipation, the air heavy with the scent of incense and the quiet murmurs of the gathering.

Large, ornate banners hung on the walls, each one bearing the insignia of the Tatanise Pack, while the floor was polished to a high sheen, reflecting the faces of those who awaited the announcement.

At the front of the room, Nikolai, one of the schoolmasters and one of the most respected members of the pack, stepped forward, his voice booming through the hall. "The inauguration of the new Lycan of the Tatanise Pack and master of Adolphus Noble School starts now!" His announcement was met with cheers from the crowd, the senior students standing tall, their expressions filled with respect and admiration for the young man who would now lead them.

"Welcome, the new leader!" Nikolai shouted, gesturing toward Icarus, who had been escorted to the front by several senior members of the pack. The crowd parted to make way for him, and Icarus walked with a dignified step, his head held high, his eyes focused and calm as he made his way to the front of the hall. The whispers quieted as he approached, and all eyes were on him, their gazes filled with reverence.

At the very front of the hall, seated on a high, throne-like chair, sat Master Matthias.

His once-youthful features had aged slightly, his years of leadership evident in the fine lines etched around his eyes.

But there was no mistaking the wisdom and strength that radiated from him.

He had seen many leaders come and go, but there was something about Icarus that made him proud—something that gave him confidence that the pack and the school were in capable hands.

As Icarus reached the front, his steps slowed.

He could feel the weight of the moment, the power that came with taking his place at the head of the pack.

Master Matthias’ eyes met his, and a small smile tugged at the older werewolf’s lips. It was a smile of approval, of pride, and of recognition.

Icarus knelt before Matthias, bowing his head in respect.

The hall was silent, the moment sacred.

He could feel the eyes of every student and pack member on him, and for a brief moment, the world seemed to hold its breath.

He wasn’t just a student now; he was the new leader.

His transformation was complete.
