"Read out the requirements of what the person who is to be the new leader of Tatanise Pack and master of Adolphus Noble School should have," Master Matthias said, his voice stern and commanding, filling the air with an undeniable authority.

Nikolai, who had been given the task, stood tall and began reading aloud, his voice crisp and clear. "First requirement... the person should get rid of greediness in his heart." His words resonated through the room, and the quiet buzz of anticipation was almost palpable as everyone focused on the message.

"Second," Nikolai continued, "he should get rid of hatred."Full novel: Death's Favorite Daughter [Cursed • Werewolf • Academy • Dark Fantasy] — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Icarus, still on his knees before the assembly, listened intently. His gaze was fixed on the floor, but his mind was far from still. His thoughts raced, dissecting every word, every implication of what was being said. The weight of the requirements felt heavy on his shoulders, but he kept his composure. His eyes flickered briefly at Nikolai, noting the man’s calm expression, before returning to the ground.

Icarus mentally checked off the boxes one by one. "Greed... Hatred..." he thought, internally acknowledging his past struggles with both. "I’ve come a long way, but am I truly free of these?"

His thoughts were abruptly interrupted as Nikolai read the final requirement, his voice carrying an even more somber tone. "Third requirement... is to get rid of any emotion whatsoever."

Icarus's eyes widened slightly, a momentary shock flashing across his face before he quickly masked it. His hands clenched into fists, but no one could see the tremble that passed through his fingers. "What did he just say?"

His heart raced as the final requirement sank in. "Get rid of any emotion whatsoever..." It was a phrase that seemed impossible to grasp, as if it were pulling the very essence of his identity away from him. The weight of the words hung in the air like a suffocating cloud, and for a split second, Icarus felt an overwhelming sense of helplessness.

"Does this mean..." he thought, "I can never reciprocate Malachi's love for me? What about Darcelle... could I never feel anything for her, either?" His chest tightened, the pang of these emotions threatening to surface. He had worked so hard to build relationships with these people, to connect, to let his feelings guide him. But now, all of that was being ripped away by a cold, impersonal set of rules.

Icarus closed his eyes for just a moment, gathering himself. He could feel the eyes of the room on him, watching, waiting for him to react. But he would give them nothing. His exterior remained calm, emotionless, even as his heart silently screamed. "No matter how much I want to feel something... it seems I must push it all aside. The weight of duty... of leadership... it must come first."

Nikolai finished reading and paused, allowing the gravity of the words to settle in the air. Master Matthias nodded approvingly, but there was no softness in his gaze.

"Hand over the school master's badge," Leandro commanded, his voice cutting through the tension in the room.

One of the senior students, who had been standing off to the side, stepped forward. His face was solemn as he handed the badge to Icarus, the symbol of power, of responsibility. Icarus rose slowly, his knees aching from the long moments spent kneeling.

As he reached out and took the badge, he felt a strange mix of emotions well up inside of him. He stared at the small, gleaming emblem in his hands.

It was beautiful, a piece of the legacy he had always strived for.

But now, holding it, all he felt was an emptiness that seemed to stretch endlessly before him. This was the moment where he fully understood the sacrifice required for leadership—his personal desires, his feelings, all would have to be set aside for the greater good.

Icarus glanced at the badge one more time before slipping it into his storage vault, a heavy sigh escaping his lips as he tried to mask the sadness welling up inside of him. He had worked tirelessly to reach this point, but now that it was finally within his grasp, the cost was more than he had anticipated.

The room remained silent, the weight of the ceremony hanging in the air.

These were the new rules that he had to follow, whether he liked it or not.

The path ahead of him was now clearer, but it was colder, more sterile, and far less forgiving. For the sake of the Tatanise Pack and Adolphus Noble School, he would have to bury the parts of himself that made him... human.

The emotions he held for Malachi and Darcelle—those would have to be buried deep, locked away in a place where they couldn’t reach him.

No matter how difficult it would be, Icarus knew this was the only way forward.

But deep inside, the question gnawed at him: Was he really prepared to lose himself completely in order to lead?

Master Matthias watched Icarus with a sharp gaze, his smile faint but approving as he observed the young man’s reaction. There was no mistaking the weight of what had just been placed upon him. He had seen countless young leaders rise to power, but none quite like Icarus, who, despite the weight of his new responsibilities, managed to hold his composure.

For now.

"Your resolve will be tested," Master Matthias thought to himself, but he had no doubt that Icarus would prove himself. The man had grown in ways that were impossible to ignore, and though the price was steep, Master Matthias believed that Icarus would learn to bear it.

With the ceremony concluded and the responsibilities set into motion, the three new masters—Nikolai, Leandro, and Icarus—were now at the helm, each holding dominion over their respective realms. However, while the weight of the school and the pack rested on their shoulders, Icarus remained their superior, the highest among them. His mind, while strong, was undoubtedly strained by the expectations now thrust upon him.

As per tradition, Master Matthias had granted them new homes—grand, majestic residences within the school’s sprawling grounds. Three enormous floating islands, each as magnificent as the next. They were symbols of their new status, each island hovering serenely in the sky, isolated and designed to suit their power and authority.

Icarus couldn’t help but feel a mixture of awe and melancholy as he soared toward his new home. The winds ruffled his cloak, and the landscape beneath him blurred into a sea of lush greenery and ancient stone.

He could hear the distant sounds of the school, the faint hum of students training, the soft rustle of leaves, but it all felt far away.

Distant, almost irrelevant, to the gnawing sensation in his chest.

"I should be happy," he thought. "This is what I’ve worked for all these years. I’m the leader now. The master." But the reality of the requirements—of the cold detachment he now had to maintain—chilled him to the core.

The badge, the weight of leadership, had cost him so much.

He could feel it pressing down on him, as though every breath he took was being suffocated by the rules he was forced to follow. "Get rid of emotions. Get rid of love, longing, attachment..."

The thought alone made his heart ache, and his mind began to spiral, questioning everything he had known before.

"How can I lead without feeling anything? Without loving the people who depend on me? How do I turn off the part of me that has always cared?" The questions circled endlessly in his mind, but there was no answer.

He would have to adapt, or the weight would crush him.

He would have to push forward.

For the pack.

For the school.

For everyone who had placed their trust in him.

After what felt like an eternity, Icarus arrived at his new home.

The floating island on the northern part of the school was unlike anything he had ever seen.

It was enormous, the mansion that sat atop it sprawling and magnificent, a grand testament to his new position.

The island itself was surrounded by shimmering energy barriers, and the mansion was constructed with stone and materials that gleamed under the sun, reflecting light in all directions.

Tall trees and well-manicured gardens lined the edges of the island, and a winding path led up to the entrance of the grand structure.

Icarus landed softly on the island, his boots clicking against the polished stone walkway that led toward the entrance. He paused for a moment, just standing there, taking it all in. The silence that enveloped the island was eerily peaceful, but it only made the emptiness inside him more pronounced. There was no one here to share this with him, no friends to offer comfort, no familiar faces.

The mansion loomed before him, its doors grand and imposing. He had once dreamed of a home like this, a place where he could feel secure, where his hard work could be rewarded.

But now, it felt cold.

Isolated.

Detached from everything he had once desired.

"This is the price of power," Icarus thought bitterly. "The price of leadership."

As he walked up the steps toward the entrance, he couldn't help but glance across the skies. Far to the west, he could see Nikolai’s island, with its sleek, elegant towers and sprawling gardens. To the east, Leandro’s floating home was bathed in the warm light of the setting sun, the architecture bold and imposing.

Each island, each mansion, was a reflection of its master. While Icarus’ island had been designed with a calm, natural elegance in mind, Nikolai's reflected his sharpness, his calculating nature, with towering spires and angular, modern designs. Leandro’s home was massive and fortress-like, a symbol of his strength, built with materials as unyielding as his will.

Though they were now peers, Icarus couldn't help but feel the weight of the distance between them. They would be masters of their domains, each with their own approach, but it was clear that the burden of leadership lay heaviest on him.

The doors to his new home creaked open as he stepped inside, and the grand interior stretched out before him. The space was vast, with high ceilings adorned with intricate chandeliers that sparkled in the light. The walls were decorated with fine art, tapestries, and old relics from past masters. The furniture was elegant yet simple, and everything had an aura of serenity that felt out of place to Icarus. He couldn’t shake the feeling that everything in this place was foreign, and that it was now his responsibility to fill it with life, to make it his own.

But how? How could he make a place his own when the very core of who he was had been stripped away? The very essence of himself had been reduced to nothing more than a leader, a figurehead for the school and the pack.

Icarus exhaled deeply and walked further into the mansion, trying to ignore the tears that threatened to fall. He needed to keep moving, to keep going. The responsibilities ahead of him were greater than his personal struggles.

"You are the leader now. You are the master. The pack needs you. The school needs you."

But as he walked deeper into the mansion, the weight of the badge in his pocket, and the emptiness in his chest, became harder to ignore.

No matter how much he tried to bury it, the reality was clear.

He had crossed a point of no return.

His life, his future, would never be the same again.
