“There’s no mistake.
This is the breath of Water Breathing!
Who taught this guy to breathe like that?” Urokodaki Sakonji murmured to himself with a startled expression on his face.
Every Demon Slayer has their own unique breathing style.
All breathing styles originate from the original Sun Breathing, the source of all breathing techniques.
Because Sun Breathing is extremely powerful and domineering, not everyone is suited to learn it.
Therefore, over a long period of development, five major breathing techniques were derived from Sun Breathing:
—Water Breathing —Fire Breathing —Rock Breathing —Wind Breathing —Lightning Breathing
Throughout history, some have even created new breathing techniques based on these five.
Among the Nine Hashiras of the Demon Slayer Corps, some use breathing techniques derived from these five major styles.
Due to the special nature of the Hashiras, no two Hashiras can share the same breathing style.
Each breathing technique corresponds to only one Hashira.
Only when the current Hashira abdicates due to unforeseen circumstances or dies in battle can the Hashira’s position be inherited by a qualified successor.
“Hashira” is merely a title within the Demon Slayer Corps.
It carries no real nobility, nor is it a symbol of power.
As a Hashira, one bears the responsibility of completely eradicating demons from this world.
…
As time passed, it quickly became dusk.
Urokodaki Sakonji stopped in front of a small wooden hut.
Tanjiro collapsed to the ground, panting heavily.
Shin, however, remained calm and composed as he stood before Urokodaki Sakonji.
“Ah-hoo~ Ah-hoo~ Huff~ Huff~ Senior Urokodaki, did Senior Shin and I pass the test?
Heh~ Heh~ Heh~” Tanjiro asked with a sigh of relief.
Urokodaki Sakonji opened the door of the wooden hut and said, “Shin’s test is over.
Yours is just beginning.
Come with me up the mountain!”
Tanjiro gasped upon hearing this.
“Shin, you stay here and watch over Tanjiro’s sister.
I have something to ask you when I return,” Urokodaki Sakonji told Shin.
Hearing this, Shin glanced at the somewhat distraught Tanjiro and said, “Don’t disappoint me!”
After saying this, Shin went into the small wooden hut and placed Nezuko on the wooden bed in a dark corner.
Nezuko had inexplicably fallen asleep.
Shin didn’t intend to wake her.
Instead, he sat cross-legged and began to rest.
Tanjiro watched Shin settle his sister down and then said to him, “Senior Shin, I will definitely pass the test!”
Shin glanced at Tanjiro but didn’t say anything more, only nodding.
“Let’s go, Tanjiro!” Urokodaki Sakonji’s urging rang out quickly.
Tanjiro didn’t linger any longer and turned to follow Urokodaki Sakonji up the mountain.
…
Shin, waiting in the cabin, saw Urokodaki Sakonji return after nightfall.
Looking around, Shin noticed Tanjiro wasn’t there and became somewhat puzzled.
However, Shin didn’t immediately ask, knowing the old man wouldn’t let Tanjiro die.
After a moment of eye contact, Urokodaki Sakonji finally spoke, “Let’s have boiled fish slices for dinner tonight!”
