“From now on, it’s up to you.
See if you can elevate what I’ve taught you.
Your senior brother, Shin, needs no introduction.
His talent surpasses both yours and Giyu’s.
If he hadn’t been waiting for you, he would have already become a powerful member of the Demon Slayer Corps, just like Giyu Tomioka.
As for whether you can participate in the Demon Slayer Corps’ final selection, you’ll need to pass one last test.
Follow me!” Urokodaki Sakonji said and vanished in a flash.
“Let’s go!” Shin said to Tanjiro, then followed.
Tanjiro followed closely behind.
The three of them—Urokodaki Sakonji in front, Shin second, and Tanjiro last—moved through the mountain.
Finally, Urokodaki Sakonji led Shin and Tanjiro to a relatively open area on Mount Sagiri.
A year had passed, and snow was falling again on the mountain.
In the open space stood a huge, round boulder bound with thick hemp ropes—presumably dragged there by Urokodaki Sakonji.
“Tanjiro, if you can cut this boulder, I’ll allow you and Shin to participate in the Demon Slayer Corps’ final selection,” Urokodaki Sakonji instructed.
After speaking, he silently departed once more.
Tanjiro called out several times in the direction Urokodaki Sakonji had left, but could not stop him.
Looking at the enormous boulder before him, Tanjiro began to doubt himself.
Could such a massive boulder really be cut with his sword?
He turned to Shin and asked, “Shin-senpai, can you cut this boulder?”
Hearing this, Shin nodded and said calmly, “Yes!”
Shin-senpai!
Then can you demonstrate for me?” Tanjiro was eager to see how Shin would cut the boulder.
“No.” Shin refused Tanjiro’s request without much thought.
“Why?” Tanjiro was puzzled.
“This is the old man’s final test for you, so I can’t give any demonstrations,” Shin replied.
Besides this reason, there was only one boulder like this.
If Shin cut it, it would be difficult to find an identical one for Tanjiro.
Furthermore, this was Tanjiro’s final test, and Shin did not want to interfere too much.
“Think carefully about what the old man said, or you’ll never be able to do it your whole life!”
After saying this, Shin turned and left.
“Shin-senpai!” Tanjiro was somewhat at a loss.
Soon, only Tanjiro remained on Mount Sagiri.
The cold winter wind and drifting snow danced gently through the mountains.
The surrounding silence plunged Tanjiro into thought.
The words of Shin and Urokodaki Sakonji echoed in his ears.
“Sublimation?
Is what I’ve learned just the surface, not the essence?” Tanjiro asked himself silently.
Thinking, Tanjiro swung his sword to test it. Get faster updates on g.com.
The blade struck the boulder with a metallic clang.
This impact sent a shiver down Tanjiro’s spine.
Another six months passed.
During this time, without Urokodaki Sakonji’s guidance, Tanjiro repeated his previous training every day, attempting to cut the boulder.
Shin would occasionally spar with Tanjiro, but Tanjiro always lost miserably.
“Shin-senpai, am I really useless?
Six months have passed, and I still haven’t cut the boulder.”
