“Hello, Uncle and Auntie. I’m Nan Yu. I’m sorry I’m late.”
Fu Beichen and Nan Yu entered from the doorway.
They were carrying bags of gifts. Since they had arrived at this hour, someone must have informed them about the gathering.
Fu Beichen put the gifts down and glanced at Nan Xin before turning his attention to Fu Changlian and Su Limei.
“Dad, Mom, the R&D department has been launching new products recently, and Ah Yu has been working overtime until now. She prepared all these gifts in advance.”
Fu Changlian greeted them with a cheerful smile.
“So it’s Xiao Yu! Come sit down and have dinner with Beichen.”
When Nan Xin had arrived, Fu Changlian hadn’t said a single word to her. He had barely even looked at her.
But the moment Nan Yu arrived, his attitude changed completely. Even his stern expression softened.
Nan Xin was slightly taken aback.
Her father-in-law had always been stern because he had once been a department director. He rarely showed warmth to anyone. Even when Nan Xin had first visited the family, all he had given her was a faint acknowledgment, and he had barely spoken more than a handful of words to her.
When both families had met before Nan Xin and Fu Beichen’s wedding, Nan Yu had already gone abroad and had only recently returned.
Yet Fu Changlian was treating Nan Yu as though they had known each other for years.
Could it be that Fu Beichen had brought Nan Yu to the Fu family home before?
She subconsciously looked toward Fu Beichen, only to discover the same confusion on his face.
Realizing that he had misspoken, Fu Changlian gave an awkward laugh and explained, “Come to think of it, the last time I saw Xiao Yu was when you two were still in high school. If I remember correctly, you were classmates back then, right?”
Everyone knew that Fu Beichen and Nan Yu had been classmates.
Fu Beichen led Nan Yu to her seat, making the atmosphere at the dinner table even more awkward.
This was supposed to be a dinner between both families, yet a husband had brought another woman home to meet his parents and present gifts, while his actual wife, Nan Xin, sat alone to the side with her pregnant belly.
Nan Xin was clearly the legitimate wife, yet her own parents were fussing over Nan Yu instead.
“Xiao Yu, why didn’t you bring Nuannuan with you?”
Nan Xin’s mother deliberately brought up Fu Nuannuan.
Nan Yu smiled.
“We were a little busy today, so I didn’t have time to bring Nuannuan along. When I have the chance next time, I’ll bring her over to meet her grandparents.”
Fu Changlian, who had initially shown no interest in the child, suddenly looked forward to meeting her.
“Xiao Yu is so beautiful. Her daughter must be an adorable little girl too. Xiao Yu, bring the child over to see us when you have time.”
“Of course, Uncle.”
Nan Yu obediently nodded before turning toward Su Limei, who had already returned to her seat.
“Auntie, Nuannuan has always said that she wants to meet Grandma. When I have the chance, I’ll bring her over to see you.”
“Really? She’s only four, yet she already knows to miss her grandmother. You must have taught her well.”
Su Limei’s attitude was neither warm nor cold, causing the smile on Nan Yu’s face to stiffen slightly.
Fu Beichen reached across the table and held Nan Yu’s hand.
“Mom, Nuannuan is my first daughter, and she’s also the eldest granddaughter of the Fu family.”
The protective meaning behind his words was unmistakable.
Su Limei loved this son of hers more than anyone else. Since he had spoken up, she swallowed her displeasure and said nothing more.
Under the table, Fu Yueling reached over and held Nan Xin’s hand.
When Nan Xin turned toward her, Fu Yueling gave her a comforting look.
In truth, Nan Xin wasn’t very sad anymore.
Perhaps she had already developed an emotional resistance to all of this.
She gave Fu Yueling a small smile.
But when she turned back toward the others, all warmth had disappeared from her eyes.
“What exactly are you people trying to do?”
No one had expected Nan Xin to suddenly interrupt.
Her voice was exceptionally cold.
The atmosphere instantly froze.
Nan Xin’s gaze swept across everyone before finally settling on Fu Beichen and Nan Yu.
“Fu Beichen, you haven’t even divorced me yet, and you’ve already brought your mistress here to openly provoke me. What do you take me for?”
Su Limei shot a cold look at Nan Xin’s parents.
“You two have been talking all this time, and it turns out you didn’t even discuss this properly with your own daughter before coming here to replace her with your eldest daughter as Beichen’s wife. What do you take our family for?”
“Dear in-law, don’t be angry. This girl just hasn’t thought things through. I’ll talk some sense into her…”
“Talk some sense into her? She’s carrying a child from our Fu family! Do you really want my Fu family’s child to be left outside while we accept the unwanted daughter your eldest daughter brought back?”
Su Limei’s words were completely merciless.
Everyone at the table except Nan Xin and Fu Yueling immediately changed expressions.
But Su Limei had always been sharp-tongued.
She had spoken to Nan Xin like this in the past as well.
It was simply Nan Xin’s turn to see the tables turned.
Nan Xin’s lips curved into the faintest smile.
The next moment, however, her eyes reddened.
She bit her lip hard and stood up.
“I know Beichen and my sister truly love each other. I don’t want to come between them either. As for the child in my belly…”
Nan Xin lowered her eyes. Her voice carried a painful reluctance, as though she were forcing herself to make a decision she didn’t want to make.
“The child’s father doesn’t love him at all. Even if he’s born, he’ll only suffer. It would be better to abort him now.”
With that, Nan Xin pushed her chair back and turned to leave.
No one had expected the usually timid and easily bullied Nan Xin to make such a decision.
Seeing that Nan Xin was actually about to leave, Su Limei hurriedly urged Fu Beichen.
“Go stop her! The child she’s carrying could be my eldest grandson!”
Fu Beichen frowned but didn’t move.
Nan Yu bit her lip and hesitantly said, “Auntie, actually, the child in Xin Xin’s belly is…”
She wanted to reveal the secret that the child in Nan Xin’s belly was not Fu Beichen’s.
But Fu Beichen stopped her.
Their eyes met, and he shook his head at her.
By then, anxious Su Limei had already rushed over herself and grabbed Nan Xin, pulling the red-eyed woman back.
Her tone was unusually gentle.
“Why are you being so impulsive? With your parents here, you’ll always be my daughter-in-law. No one can take that away from you.”
Nan Xin gave a bitter smile.
“Mom, it’s better if we don’t keep this child. I can’t even afford the money for prenatal checkups anymore.”
“Brother, you don’t even give your wife any spending money?”
Fu Yueling could no longer stand it and angrily questioned Fu Beichen.
Fu Beichen remained silent.
His assistant gave Nan Xin only three thousand yuan a month for household expenses. He had no face to admit that in front of everyone.
Su Limei glared at Fu Beichen.
“Give Nan Xin your secondary card. Give it to her right now.”
“Mom!”
“We’ll deal with everything else after the baby is born!”
If the child turned out not to be a boy, they could simply take the card back afterward.
Su Limei didn’t believe that someone as weak and timid as Nan Xin could cause any real trouble.
Fu Beichen pressed his lips together and turned his gaze toward Nan Yu.
At that moment, Nan Yu’s expression was incredibly complicated, as if someone had overturned an entire box of paint across her face.
Because the secondary card was with her.
