“Nuannuan wants Mommy and Daddy to be together~”
Fu Nuannuan hugged Fu Beichen’s leg. Her sweet voice instantly melted his heart.
The slight hesitation he had felt disappeared completely.
He scooped Fu Nuannuan up with one arm and wrapped the other around Nan Yu’s shoulders.
“Ah Yu, you’re just too kind. Once we return home, I’ll announce your identities at Nuannuan’s birthday banquet.”
Leaning against Fu Beichen, Nan Yu’s eyes flashed with smugness, but she deliberately put on a worried expression.
“But what about the baby in my sister’s belly?”
A mocking smile curled across Fu Beichen’s lips, his voice filled with contempt.
“She loves me so much. How could she possibly tolerate having another man’s child in her womb? That bastard is probably already in a trash can by now.”
He was certain she couldn’t bear such humiliation.
Even more certain that she wouldn’t have the courage to keep the bastard growing inside her.
……
When Nan Xin woke up, she had already been transferred to the intensive care unit.
Her first instinct was to lower her gaze toward her stomach. When she saw that it was still swollen and rounded, she finally let out a breath of relief.
The baby was still there.
At that moment, two young nurses entered the room, their voices filled with undisguised admiration.
“Dr. Ji is incredible! The pregnant woman in Bed 2 was in such critical condition, yet he managed to pull both her and the baby back from the brink of death!”
“Dr. Ji is practically a legend in the medical field. No wonder everyone says the pregnant woman in Bed 2 is so lucky…”
“Stop talking. Dr. Ji is making his rounds!”
Their quiet discussion immediately ceased.
Ji Zhouye entered the room with several senior doctors.
His presence was so imposing that everyone in the room instinctively fell behind him.
Nan Xin had monitoring wires attached to her body. Even the slightest movement sent a dull, fine pain through her chest.
She inadvertently raised her eyes and met Ji Zhouye’s cool, distant gaze.
She blinked lightly, her eyes carrying a hint of confusion and helplessness.
Ji Zhouye glanced at her before turning slightly toward the people behind him.
“The patient just woke up after surgery and needs quiet. Everyone, leave for now.”
No one questioned him.
The group that had entered in a grand procession obediently filed out of the room, even closing the door behind them.
“Tell me. What is it?”
Ji Zhouye lightly tugged at his collar, his tone as cold and indifferent as ever.
Nan Xin’s throat hurt terribly. Unable to speak, she picked up the phone beside her bed, typed something, and held it out to him.
“Dr. Ji, please help me give birth to this child.”
“You want to hire me?”
Although he was wearing a mask, Nan Xin could still hear the mockery in his voice.
She hurriedly typed again.
“No! I’m begging you. Please help me give birth to this child. As long as you can help me keep this baby, I’ll do anything you ask!”
“You don’t need to beg me. This is my duty as a doctor. Of course…”
Ji Zhouye’s sharp eyes settled on Nan Xin.
“That’s assuming you can pay the medical fees.”
Having been seen through at a glance, Nan Xin’s cheeks flushed with embarrassment.
Yes, she really had no money.
Fu Beichen was extremely wealthy, but he had never spent any of it on her. He always said, “Someone takes care of your food, clothing, housing, and transportation. What do you need money for?”
So even if she divorced Fu Beichen now, given his personality, she would probably leave the marriage with nothing.
She wasn’t willing to accept that.
Why should she?
For three years of marriage, she had given up her education and career to take care of Fu Beichen’s every need. Why should she end up with nothing but humiliation and misery?
Even if they divorced, she would reclaim everything that belonged to her.
“I won’t default on the medical expenses.”
Nan Xin spoke hoarsely, determination evident in her eyes.
Looking at the woman who appeared delicate and fragile yet possessed such extraordinary resolve, Ji Zhouye’s gaze darkened slightly.
For some inexplicable reason, his mind flashed back to seven months ago, when he had been drugged and a woman had stumbled into his room.
When he had forcefully taken her, she had been in excruciating pain because it was her first time. Her entire body had trembled uncontrollably, yet she had stubbornly endured it without making a sound.
When he woke the next morning, the woman was gone.
He had once sent people to look for her, but unfortunately, she had vanished without a trace. Even now, there was still no news of her.
Ji Zhouye tugged lightly at his collar.
He reached out and took Nan Xin’s phone. When he handed it back to her, a new phone number had been saved in it.
“I’m very busy.”
“Thank you, Dr. Ji!”
Once she was alone in the hospital room, Nan Xin’s expression turned cold.
Because she had often been thrown out of the house by her parents whenever she did something wrong as a child, her body had become chronically cold and weak. Her doctors had told her long ago that she would have difficulty carrying a child to term.
So Fu Beichen must have been counting on that.
He could humiliate her without having to deal with the disgust of knowing she was carrying another man’s child. After all, given his personality, even if he didn’t love her, he would never allow her to give birth to another man’s child.
He thought everything was under his control.
Since Fu Beichen had been capable of scheming to make her sleep with another man, she hoped that when this child was born, he would still be able to smile.
Nan Xin spent two days in the intensive care unit before finally being transferred to a regular ward on the third day.
Just as she was able to get out of bed and move around, her phone suddenly rang.
The caller ID read: “Sister.”
She took a deep breath before answering.
“Xin Xin, I sent you so many messages. Why didn’t you reply?”
Nan Yu’s gentle voice came through the phone.
Hearing that familiar voice again, Nan Xin’s hand trembled around the phone.
Her sister.
The family member she had trusted and relied on most throughout her entire life.
She had never imagined that, in the end, her own sister would stab her so viciously in the back.
Nan Yu sighed through the phone.
“I didn’t mean to steal Beichen from you. Mom and Dad knew how difficult it was for me to be alone overseas, and Beichen was worried about me too, so they told him where I was. Xin Xin, if you’re unhappy, your sister can give Beichen back to you.”
As she spoke, her voice became choked with tears.
“Nuannuan’s birthday is in three days. We’re having it at the Mingjue Hotel. I want to explain everything to you in person. Will you come?”
Nan Xin suppressed the emotions surging inside her and replied coldly,
“I’m in the hospital. It’s inconvenient for me to attend.”
“Give me the phone.”
Fu Beichen’s deep, cold voice suddenly came from the other end.
“Inviting you to Nuannuan’s birthday banquet is already giving you face. Don’t be so ungrateful.”
His words struck Nan Xin’s heart like a boulder, leaving her in so much pain that she could barely breathe.
She actually laughed from sheer anger.
“Who’s the shameless one here? The wife being asked to attend her husband’s mistress’s child’s birthday party, or the husband who’s holding the party?”
“So what?” Fu Beichen sneered contemptuously. “Your body can’t carry a child anyway. Nuannuan is my only child now.”
Nan Xin felt as though she had fallen into an icy abyss.
So he knew everything.
He knew she was pregnant, yet he had watched her desperately fight to save another man’s child.
And the last bit of hope remaining in Nan Xin’s heart disappeared completely.
She laughed in fury.
“Fu Beichen, how do you know I can’t carry a child?”
Silence suddenly fell on the other end of the line.
“Fu Beichen, the child in my belly is your legitimate child, born within our marriage.”
Nan Xin suddenly lowered her voice, a mocking smile appearing on her lips.
“Or is President Fu so broad-minded that you’re willing to publicly admit that you personally sent your own wife into another man’s bed?”
With that, Nan Xin hung up.
Inside the Fu family villa, Fu Beichen stared at the disconnected call, his expression frighteningly dark.
He suddenly smashed his phone against the floor, shattering it into pieces.
“She didn’t abort the child!”
She clearly knew the child was a bastard.
She clearly knew that her body couldn’t carry a child to term.
So why hadn’t she gotten rid of it?
Nan Yu flinched at Fu Beichen’s reaction, but she quickly regained her composure.
She walked over and pitifully tugged at the corner of his clothes.
“Beichen, my sister is probably just trying to get your attention. She wants you to care about her.”
Fu Beichen’s furious emotions gradually calmed because of Nan Yu’s words.
He sneered.
“She’s carrying another man’s bastard and still dares to threaten me? She really has some nerve.”
