Ruan Qiu stared at the woman’s evasive eyes. Someone committing a bad deed for the very first time is bound to feel a little guilty.
The woman’s current state clearly showed that she had something on her conscience.
“The child in your daughter-in-law’s belly is the first grandchild in your family, right?” Ruan Qiu asked calmly.
Hearing Ruan Qiu mention her grandson, the woman’s cloudy eyes instantly filled with tears, and she began to sob and wail, muttering entirely about her precious grandson and similar things.
“All right, stop crying here.”
“Nurse, do you think my daughter-in-law will still be able to have children after she gets better?” the woman asked with a conflicted expression.
In her heart, a woman’s health was not important; what mattered was whether she could still bear children.
“Ma’am, what you should be concerned about right now is your daughter-in-law, not whether she can still have children. Your son is in a military marriage; even if she can’t have children after recovering, it won’t be easy to get a divorce.” Ruan Qiu said this on purpose just to see how the older woman would react.
Upon hearing that military marriages were difficult to dissolve, the woman looked completely bewildered.
“Why is a military marriage hard to divorce?”
“Of course it is. Especially under the current circumstances, your daughter-in-law fell from upstairs and lost the child, making her a disabled family member. It’s even harder to get a divorce then.” Ruan Qiu deliberately emphasized the fact that she had fallen from upstairs.
The woman’s expression changed from blank to panic-stricken.
Ruan Qiu dared to bet that Chen Ji’s wife had definitely not fallen by herself.
Yunyun came out from the inside.
“I’ve finished hanging the IV drip, let’s go to another ward.”
Ruan Qiu followed Nurse Yunyun to another ward.
During a break, Ruan Qiu wanted to take a look at Xiao Tao’s medical record, but Yunyun warned her.
“Stop looking for trouble. Xiao Tao’s attending physician is Dr. Qin. You just started working here, so don’t bring trouble upon yourself.”
Ruan Qiu thought about it and gave up the impulse to investigate further. Perhaps it was just the occupational habit of her past life as a forensic pathologist, making her want to trace everything down to the very last detail.
Just as the two of them were talking, someone rushed in and shouted anxiously, “Something has happened to the patient in your ward! Hurry! Oxygen!”
Without even a moment to eat, Yunyun jumped up and rushed to push the oxygen tank.
Ruan Qiu also dashed out of the lounge to help Yunyun push the heavy oxygen tank.
Once the oxygen tank was rolled into place and the crowd dispersed, Yunyun deftly fitted the mask over the patient.
The patient’s infusion tube had been pulled out, and the patient had started convulsing. Fortunately, it was discovered in time, preventing a more serious outcome.
Ruan Qiu and Yunyun exchanged glances, completely baffled.
Who was so bold as to dare pull out a patient’s infusion tube right inside the hospital?
“Which of you two was on duty?” Dr. Qin turned around, his furious eyes staring straight at Ruan Qiu.
Yunyun raised her hand, “I was on duty.”
“What are you two good for? Don’t you know that patients in intensive care need to be watched around the clock?” Dr. Qin threw a tantrum.
“We came over to check on the patient every five minutes. It’s just that right before I left, this older woman kept squatting right outside the door.” Ruan Qiu pointed at the woman hiding by the doorway and said to everyone.
“What nonsense are you talking about? I just came in to check on my daughter-in-law. Who knew your needles would be tied like this, and now you’re turning around to blame us?” The woman unreasonably shifted the blame.
“I’ve said it before, no one is allowed into the intensive care unit except doctors and nurses. Why didn’t you listen?” Ruan Qiu interrogated her.
The woman played the rogue, “I didn’t hear it. I just wanted to see my daughter-in-law. Is that a crime?”
“Ma, stop talking.” Chen Ji tugged at his mother from the side and said to the doctors and nurses, “Thank you all for your hard work. As long as my wife is fine, I can rest easy.”
Ruan Qiu stared at Chen Ji for a long time. Did this man really care about his wife, or did he have an ulterior motive?
“You, come with me!”
Dr. Qin motioned for Ruan Qiu to follow him to his office.
Yunyun was frightened and whispered to Ruan Qiu, “Say some nice things.”
Ruan Qiu gave Yunyun a reassuring look and followed Dr. Qin out of the ward.
As they passed the regular ward, Tan Bo intercepted them.
“Dr. Qin, I’m looking for Ruan Qiu to give me an injection.”
Tan Bo leaned against the doorway, looking lazily at Dr. Qin.
“Out of so many nurses, why do you only want to look for her?” Dr. Qin barked irritably.
“I just like her giving me injections.” Tan Bo had a brazen attitude, acting as though he wouldn’t leave unless Ruan Qiu stayed.
Dr. Qin had no choice. He glared at Ruan Qiu and stalked back to his consulting room in a huff.
Tan Bo grabbed Ruan Qiu and pulled her into the ward.
“What are you doing? Stop pulling and tugging.” Ruan Qiu slapped away Tan Bo’s hand. Knowing he was helping her, she still spoke with a sharp tone.
“Hey, are you stupid? He tells you to go and you actually go? He’s a doctor, and you shouldn’t be alone with a nurse in the consulting room in a hospital.”
Tan Bo wasn’t entirely clueless either.
“Looking at you like this, are you very familiar with this Dr. Qin?”
“Of course. Let me tell you, don’t let this guy’s upright appearance fool you; he’s actually extremely indecent. A nurse anonymously reported him for harassment before, saying he groped a young nurse’s bottom. Later, he ran all the way to my house, crying a miserable river of snot and tears, saying he was confused for a moment and didn’t mean to do it. My dad appreciated his talent back then, so he swept the matter under the rug.”
“So you’re saying your dad covered for him!”
Tan Bo rolled his eyes, “What else could he do? We have far too few capable doctors right now, and his medical skills are passable.”
In times when personnel were desperately needed, personal character was roughly overlooked.
Ruan Qiu bantered, “So that’s why your father wants you to study medicine and become a useful talent.”
Tan Bo could hear the sarcasm in Ruan Qiu’s words. He curled his lip and sat down, “My dad wants me to be a useful talent, but I’m just a good-for-nothing! Making me a doctor would be no different from murder for wealth.”
He certainly possessed a high degree of self-awareness.
“Well, your confession is indeed very pragmatic.”
Tan Bo smiled. “However, I suddenly feel that studying medicine isn’t a bad idea. Ruan Qiu, can you take me on as a disciple and teach me how to judge a person’s condition based on symptoms?”
He really admired Ruan Qiu for being able to diagnose his condition in such a short amount of time.
“You don’t want to study medicine; you just want to put on an act!”
After saying that, Ruan Qiu gave Tan Bo a fierce slap on the arm. “Get some rest, otherwise this illness will bring a lot of inconvenience to your future life.”
With that, Ruan Qiu stopped fooling around with Tan Bo and returned to the intensive care unit.
Chen Ji was sitting at the entrance of the ward. Seeing Ruan Qiu, he hurriedly stood up.
“Sister-in-law, are you alright?”
“I’m fine.”
Only then did Chen Ji look relieved, “It’s good that you’re fine. I was really worried you’d be punished because of Xiao Tao.”
“How could that be? Everything I did was right, and Dr. Qin can’t do anything to me.”
“Sister-in-law, can you give me an honest answer? Will Xiao Tao be able to get better?”
Mother and son were concerned about the exact same question: whether Xiao Tao would recover, and whether she could still have children.
“Chen Ji, I’m just a nurse, not a doctor.” Ruan Qiu really didn’t want to say anything more to him, nor was it possible for her to speak about the true circumstances of Xiao Tao’s fall without any evidence.
It was hard for her to judge whether this man was an accomplice.
