The moment the call ended, Gu Huaichuan angrily threw his phone aside. Li Xiqin hurried over and picked it up.
“Chuanchuan, what did Wen Yusui say?” Li Xiqin asked cautiously.
“What else could she say?” Gu Huaichuan replied impatiently.
Seeing his expression, Li Xiqin knew that Wen Yusui had obviously refused to listen to him.
“Chuanchuan, your mother thinks… maybe we should just sign the divorce agreement.”
“Mom! What are you talking about? Absolutely not!”
Gu Huaichuan slumped onto the sofa in frustration and rubbed his temples wearily.
Li Xiqin finally couldn’t hold back any longer. She tentatively asked, “Chuanchuan, you don’t still have feelings for Wen Yusui, do you?”
A flicker of panic flashed across Gu Huaichuan’s eyes. He immediately sat upright and denied it.
“How could that be? Didn’t I tell you before? Once I sign the divorce agreement, our assets will automatically be divided equally. Do you want me to split half of the Gu family’s assets and give them to her?”
“Of course not!”
Li Xiqin quickly waved her hand.
“Your mother just thinks that since the Qiao family is so wealthy, we absolutely can’t afford to miss this opportunity! I’m just worried that if you keep refusing to divorce Wen Yusui, the Qiao family will get angry and have objections. What if we end up losing more than we gain?”
Gu Huaichuan sneered.
“Mom, you can rest assured about that. Qiao Yao is completely devoted to me now. I’ve already been nominated for the position of vice chairman of the Qiao Group. Given a little more time, I’ll definitely secure the position.”
“So Wen Yusui suddenly becoming famous isn’t good news for me. We’re still legally tied together, and Qiao Yao is already pregnant. If people find out that I cheated on my wife during our marriage, my career and my position will be completely ruined. I’d lose everything I have now.”
Just imagining that scene made Gu Huaichuan feel cold and stiff all over.
He would never allow something like that to happen, much less let himself fall to such a miserable state.
Li Xiqin was deeply shocked by his words.
“No way… Qiao Yao is pregnant? Since she’s pregnant, that means she’s completely part of the Gu family now. Just thinking about how arrogant she was before makes me angry. Even Wen Yusui never dared to give me attitude, yet Qiao Yao is always throwing a fit at me. What do I owe her?”
Li Xiqin instantly became much more confident. She excitedly added, “Since she’s carrying my grandson, she obviously won’t be able to run away now! In that case, let’s put the divorce with Wen Yusui on hold for now. How could the Gu family’s money possibly go to an outsider like her? We have to find a way to make sure she leaves the marriage with nothing!”
Meanwhile, after hanging up on Gu Huaichuan, Wen Yusui paid no attention to his threats and returned to the office.
He Yanzhou had happened to overhear some of what she said and could roughly guess who the call had been from.
When Wen Yusui returned, he stepped forward and asked with concern, “What happened? Did Gu Huaichuan come bother you again?”
Wen Yusui pulled over a nearby chair and sat down, her tone completely calm.
“Gu Huaichuan just called and told me to leave the entertainment industry. Otherwise, he said he’d release those photos of us having dinner that day and claim that I used a man to climb my way to the top.”
He Yanzhou’s brows immediately knitted together.
He hadn’t expected Gu Huaichuan to be so shameless that he would even stoop to harming his former wife.
“Yusui, don’t worry. If he really releases the photos, I’ll handle everything. Besides, we were simply having dinner that day. The restaurant must have surveillance footage. Even if he deliberately spreads false rumors, it won’t matter. Haiyu Media has a professional public-relations team. The moment he dares to spread any dirt about you, we can immediately clarify the truth across the entire internet. Whether it’s true or false, we’ll be the ones controlling the narrative.”
He Yanzhou wasn’t worried in the slightest. He was simply disgusted by Gu Huaichuan’s behavior.
Wen Yusui nodded, looking somewhat troubled.
“I’m not worried. I’m just afraid that since he refuses to sign the divorce agreement, it might affect my work later.”
He Yanzhou reassured her, “It’s fine. Leave everything to me from now on. You just focus on acting.”
Seeing the troubled look on Wen Yusui’s face, Lin Yinyin hurried over.
“What happened, Sister Wen? Why do you look unhappy? You’re practically surrounded by success and opportunities right now!”
“It’s nothing.”
Wen Yusui shook her head.
She didn’t want to bring her private matters out into the open. Besides, the whole situation had nothing to do with Lin Yinyin.
Lin Yinyin didn’t press her further. She knew Sister Wen didn’t want to talk about it, so she smoothly changed the subject.
“Sister Wen, President He just said the director told him that there’s a celebration banquet tonight! As the female lead, you absolutely have to be there!”
“Okay!”
Wen Yusui happily agreed.
He Yanzhou lowered his voice and said gently, “Yusui, if you’re in a bad mood, you can go home and rest. I can handle things with the director.”
Wen Yusui maintained her smile and answered calmly, “I’m not in a bad mood. I’m not going to let someone like him affect me. Everyone steps in dog poop at least once in their life. Being able to get rid of him is just another stroke of luck for me.”
Wen Yusui excitedly stood up.
“Besides, this is my first starring role in my life. We absolutely have to celebrate properly!”
Seeing how energetic Wen Yusui looked, He Yanzhou could tell that she wasn’t pretending. The worry in his heart finally eased.
At the same time, Gu Huaichuan was sitting in his car, repeatedly staring at the secretly taken photo from the restaurant.
He still couldn’t bring himself to post it.
If he really destroyed Wen Yusui completely, the two of them might both end up ruined beyond recovery.
Gu Huaichuan kept recalling the resolute look on her face, and he couldn’t help hesitating.
He couldn’t deny that seeing her break free from his control and stand so brilliantly before everyone had stirred up a strange, uncomfortable feeling inside him.
But that thought was immediately dismissed.
He knew that what he was really afraid of was getting dragged into the scandal if he released the photo. After all, on the surface, he was still Wen Yusui’s husband.
His hand remained wrapped around his phone, but he never pressed the send button, his mind caught in a constant struggle.
Suddenly, Qiao Yao opened the car door and happily climbed into the passenger seat.
“Huaichuan, sorry to keep you waiting! I have good news. My dad said your nomination for vice chairman should be approved very soon!”
Hearing the news, Gu Huaichuan became excited as well.
He tossed his phone aside and asked in disbelief, “Yao Yao, are you serious?!”
“Of course! Most of the shareholders have already agreed. There are just a few stubborn old shareholders who still oppose it. But don’t worry. Dad said he’ll handle them. You don’t have to worry about anything.”
“Huaichuan, Dad also said that we need to get engaged as soon as possible. Otherwise, once my belly gets bigger, it’ll be inconvenient.”
Qiao Yao stroked her stomach and tugged on Gu Huaichuan’s arm coquettishly.
“So when are you going to marry me? I’ve been waiting for you for so long!”
Gu Huaichuan reached out and carefully touched Qiao Yao’s belly, his expression gentle.
“The day I become vice chairman, I promise I’ll marry you as soon as possible.”
