ELUX : TALES OF HAILS AND FAILS

*Chapter 14: The Cartographer*

The library was quiet.

Too quiet.

No Nulls. No sirens. Just the hum of thousands of tablets burning with blue names.

Elux sat on the bottom step, head in his hands. The glow under his skin had dimmed, but it hadn’t gone out. It pulsed, slow. Like a heartbeat.

His mom sat next to him and handed him water. Real water. From a real bottle.

“Drink,” she said. “Gods and gatekeepers still get thirsty.”

Elux took it. His hand was shaking.

“I felt him,” he said. “The first Null King. He was trying to help.”

Other Nanjue was still scanning tablets. He didn’t look up. “That’s how it starts. Every tyrant thinks they’re saving the world by ending it.”

A new sound cut through the quiet. Not boots. Not a fracture.

Writing.

Elux looked up.

On the far wall, new crystal was forming. Lines spreading out like a map. And on the map, dots were appearing. Red ones.

“New fractures,” Seven’s voice came through the network, tight. “Hundreds. The Null King wasn’t lying. It’s trying to close them the other way.”

Director Lin’s voice joined in. “It’s not attacking the Eluxes. It’s erasing the worlds between them. Collapsing the space so we can’t jump.”

The map finished forming.

It wasn’t a map of World-0.

It was a map of everything.

And at the center of it, a single blue dot. Elux.

“I’m the hub,” Elux said. “Which means I can see the cracks.”

“And which means you can go to them,” Other Nanjue said. He finally looked up. There were dark circles under his eyes. “The Null King can erase worlds. But it can’t be in all of them at once. You can.”

Elux stood. The socket in the floor above called to him.

“Where do I start?” he asked.

The map answered. One red dot pulsed, bigger than the others. At the edge of the map.

A label wrote itself under it in light:

*WORLD-Δ. STATUS: COLLAPSING. TIME REMAINING: 02:14:03*

“Two hours,” his mom whispered.

Elux looked at her. “Stay here. With them.” He nodded to Other Nanjue. “Keep the library lit.”

She nodded once. “Come back to me, my son.”

He walked to the stairs. The socket was waiting.

Before he stepped in, Seven spoke in his head. “Elux. What’s in World-Δ?”

Elux closed his eyes. He reached out through the network.

And found another version of himself.

Not a soldier. Not a monk. Not a thief.

A kid. Maybe 16. Sitting on a roof, drawing.

He was drawing the library.

He was drawing Elux.

“He’s a cartographer,” Elux said. “He maps worlds that don’t exist yet.”

He stepped into the socket.

The blue light took him.

The last thing he heard before World-0 vanished was his mom:

“Bring him home.”

World-Δ was dying.

The sky was folding in on itself like paper. Buildings drifted upward, unmoored. People floated, screaming, as gravity let go.

And on the highest roof in the city, a kid with blue ink on his hands kept drawing.

He didn’t look up when Elux landed.

“You’re late,” the kid said. “I’ve been waiting since File 1.”

Elux stared at him. Same face. Younger eyes. A notebook full of sketches. Every version of Elux. Every death. Every world.

“How—”

“I map what’s real,” the kid said, tapping his pencil on the page. He showed it to Elux.

It was a drawing of the Null King. But not with a mask.

With Nanjue’s face.

“It’s not trying to close the fractures,” the kid said. “It’s trying to draw a new map. One with only one world in it.”

He tore the page out and handed it to Elux.

“Then we draw a better one,” Elux said.

He placed his hand on the kid’s notebook.

The blue light poured out.

And World-Δ stopped collapsing.
