*Chapter 13: Names That Burn*
The first Null died before it reached the third step.
Elux didn’t move. He just looked at it.
The blue light in the library answered. A line shot from the ceiling and cut the Null in half. Dust. Then the next. Dust. Then ten more. Dust.
“Okay,” Seven said through the network. “The library has defenses now.”
“It’s not the library,” Elux said. His voice was calm. Distant. “It’s us.”
Every tablet on every shelf was burning. Each one was connected to him. To all of them.
File 1. The king. His spear materialized in the air and threw itself.
File 4. The thief. Wires dropped from the ceiling and strangled a Null.
File 7. The monk. A wave of air knocked back a whole squad.
File 12. The soldier. Gunfire that wasn’t there tore through the swarm.
Thousands of versions. Fighting through one body.
His mom stood behind him, watching the war play out on the walls of light. She didn’t look scared. She looked proud.
The Other Nanjue was reading. Fast. “These aren’t just records,” he said. “They’re backups. If a version dies, the library remembers them. As long as the name burns, they can come back through you.”
“Then we make sure they all burn,” Elux said.
The Null King finally entered.
It didn’t run. It walked down the stairs, each step cracking the glass. The Nulls parted for it.
_You misunderstand your purpose, Subject 13,_ it said. The voice was in the tablets now too, making the crystal vibrate. _You are not meant to save them. You are meant to contain them. So we can erase them all at once._
Elux turned to face it. The blue in his eyes flared.
“And what if I don’t want to contain them?”
_Then you will break,_ the Null King said. _No one mind can hold a multiverse._
It raised its hand. The air turned to knives.
Elux didn’t block.
He opened himself.
The pain hit him — every death, every failure, every File 1 through 12 screaming at once. He screamed too. But he didn’t fall.
Because behind the pain were the lives.
The king’s rule. The scientist’s cure. The thief’s laugh. The soldier’s last stand.
“I’m not one mind,” Elux said through gritted teeth. “I’m all of them.”
The light exploded outward.
The knives shattered. The Nulls closest to the Null King were vaporized. The library walls cracked but didn’t fall. The names burned brighter.
The Null King staggered. For the first time, its mask showed a crack. A thin line of white light.
_Impossible,_ it said.
“No,” Elux said. He walked forward. Each step lit up more tablets. More names. “What’s impossible is erasing us.”
He stopped in front of the Null King.
He reached out. Not to fight. To touch the crack in its mask.
The moment his fingers made contact, he saw it.
A memory that wasn’t his.
A lab. The first fracture. Scientists screaming. And in the center, a man volunteering to step into the gate to close it.
The man’s face was smooth. Featureless.
The first Null King.
It was Nanjue.
From another world. The one who said yes.
Elux pulled his hand back. The crack in the mask widened.
“You were trying to fix it,” Elux said quietly. “And it broke you instead.”
The Null King didn’t answer. It turned and walked back up the stairs. The remaining Nulls followed.
At the top, it paused.
_This isn’t over, Gatekeeper. The multiverse has too many cracks. I will find another way to close them._
Then it was gone. Into the void.
Silence.
The library was still standing. Every tablet still burning.
Elux let out a breath. The blue light dimmed to a glow.
Other Nanjue put a hand on his shoulder. “You didn’t kill it.”
“I don’t think you can kill an idea,” Elux said. “But I can make sure it never closes the door again.”
He looked at the tablet with his name. File 13.
Under _Threat Level: Multiversal_, new words wrote themselves:
_Status: Active. Role: Gatekeeper._
Above them, through the fractures in the sky, every Elux Smith looked up.
And for the first time in a long time, all of them smiled.
The war wasn’t over.
But the gate was open.
