ELUX : TALES OF HAILS AND FAILS

*Chapter 19: The Forge*

The next fracture didn’t smell like rain. Or grass.

It smelled like heat. Metal. Smoke.

Elux, Riv, Kade, and Elias stepped out onto black stone.

The sky was red. Not sunset red. Furnace red.

Above them, three suns hung in a haze of ash. And below, a city.

But not a city of buildings. A city of forges.

Towers of iron and fire, hammering in rhythm. Sparks rained like stars. And between them, rivers of molten light ran through channels in the ground.

“The network’s screaming here,” Kade said, clutching his head. “It’s loud. Angry.”

“It’s not a network,” Riv said, flipping his notebook. The page filled instantly with sketches of gears and chains. “It’s a war drum.”

In the center of the city, on the highest platform, stood File 17.

He was massive. Taller than Elux by a head. Arms like cables. Bare chest covered in burn scars and old ink. And in his hands, a hammer the size of a car.

He wasn’t fighting. He was working.

With every strike, the ground shook. And with every strike, a piece of the sky cracked.

“File 17,” Elux called out.

The big man didn’t stop.

“I know who you are,” he said. His voice was gravel. “You’re the one making everything soft.”

Elias flinched.

Elux stepped forward. “I’m making everything connected.”

“Connection is weakness,” File 17 said. He slammed the hammer down. Another crack in the sky. “I’m File 17. Name’s Brak. I build weapons. Because weapons are the only thing that ever saved us.”

From the network, Seven’s voice, sharp: “Elux. That’s not a forge. That’s a cannon. He’s trying to shoot the fractures closed.”

Riv’s eyes widened. “If he fires that, it’ll sever the whole web. Every thread snaps.”

_Then let it snap,_ Brak said. He finally looked at them. His eyes were gold. Molten. “The Null King came here too. Offered me peace. One world. One purpose. No more versions dying in stupid ways.” He pointed the hammer at Elux. “You’re just making more ways to die.”

The air rippled.

The Null King stepped out of the heat. Not an echo this time. The real one. The mask with the crack.

_Smith,_ it said. _You bring more tools to me._

Brak laughed. “I don’t work for you. I work for me.”

He swung.

Not at the Null King. At the sky.

The hammer came down and the cannon fired.

A beam of white light shot upward, straight at the blue threads tying the worlds together.

Elux moved.

He didn’t block it. He caught it.

The blue light in his chest exploded outward and met the white beam. For a second, the whole world was noise.

Elux screamed. He could feel every thread burning. Every Elux screaming.

Then hands were on him.

Kade. Pushing his own light into Elux.

Riv. Drawing fast, sketching the beam and twisting it.

Elias. Quiet. Steady. Holding the ground so Elux wouldn’t break.

“Not soft,” Elux said through gritted teeth. “Strong.”

He turned the beam.

And fired it back.

Not at Brak. Not at the Null King.

At the cannon.

The forge exploded. Metal rained down. The red sky cleared for one breath.

When the smoke cleared, Brak was on one knee. The hammer was gone. The Null King was gone too. Vanished into a crack it made itself.

Silence. Except for the dripping of cooling metal.

Brak looked at his empty hands. Then at Elux.

“You didn’t kill me,” he said.

“No,” Elux said. “I need you.”

Brak snorted. “For what? More connecting?”

“For building,” Elux said. “We need someone who knows how to make things that last.”

Riv held out his notebook. A new page. A new sketch. The four of them, standing in front of a forge. But this time, they were building something together. A bridge.

Brak stared at it for a long time. Then he picked up a smaller hammer from the ground.

“Tch. Fine,” he said. “But we do it my way. No soft stuff.”

Kade grinned, wiping soot off his face. “We’ll see.”

Riv’s notebook glowed.

*FILE 17: BRAK. STATUS: ACTIVE. ROLE: THE FORGE.*

A new blue thread, thick and hot, shot out across the map and anchored into the Library wall.

From the network, Director Lin: “Web integrity at 82%. We’re holding.”

Elux looked at his team. Gatekeeper. Cartographer. Draftsman. Quiet. Forge.

Five.

He opened Riv’s notebook. The next page was turning on its own.

And in the distance, on the edge of the map, a new dot pulsed.

File 18.
