ELUX : TALES OF HAILS AND FAILS

*Chapter 20: The Mirror House*

The fracture this time felt like stepping through water.

Cold. Still. Soundless.

Elux, Riv, Kade, Elias, and Brak came out into a hallway.

White walls. White floor. White ceiling.

And mirrors. Floor to ceiling mirrors on both sides, stretching forever.

No sun. No sky. Just the reflection of them, repeated into infinity.

“Where are we?” Elias whispered. His voice echoed five times.

“A test,” Riv said. His notebook was shaking. The pages were all mirrors now too. Nothing would draw. “The map can’t see past itself here.”

Kade touched the glass. His reflection didn’t touch back. It tilted its head.

“That’s not me,” he said.

From down the hall, footsteps.

One set. But in the mirrors, a hundred.

File 18 stepped out.

She looked like Elux. Same jaw. Same eyes.

But her hair was shaved. She wore a white coat, not a shirt. And her left eye was covered by a smooth patch of mirror.

She wasn’t holding a weapon. She was holding a scalpel.

“Gatekeeper,” she said. Her voice was flat. Clinical. “You’re bleeding light.”

“Elux,” Elux said.

“I’m Elara,” she said. “File 18. I’m a surgeon. I cut out what’s broken.”

Brak shifted. “You look like you’ve been cutting a lot.”

Elara gestured to the mirrors. “I have. This world is a hospital. For versions.” She looked at each of them. “The Null King brings me the damaged ones. The ones that remember too much. I make them forget. Then I send them back. Peaceful. Quiet.”

_Efficient,_ a voice said from every mirror at once.

The Null King wasn’t here. It was speaking through the reflections.

_Surgeon. You have done well. Now give me the Gatekeeper._

All the reflections of Elara raised their scalpels.

Elux stepped forward. “You don’t have to do this.”

Elara’s real eye met his. For a second, something flickered. Pain.

“I’ve cut out 47 versions of you,” she said quietly. “Every time, they scream. Every time, they beg me to stop.” She lifted the scalpel. “I thought if I kept going, it would stop hurting.”

Riv moved. He slammed his notebook against a mirror. It cracked.

The crack spread to every reflection.

“You’re not cutting out the pain,” Riv said. “You’re cutting out yourself.”

Kade grabbed Elara’s wrist. The blue light from him jumped into her.

Memories flooded her.

File 1’s last speech. File 7’s prayer. File 12’s final stand. File 14’s laugh.

Elara gasped. The mirror over her eye cracked.

“I remember,” she whispered. “I remember all of them.”

The mirrors screamed.

The Null King’s voice went sharp. _You are compromised. Initiating purge._

The floor split. Black lines raced toward them.

“No,” Elux said. He put both hands on the ground.

The blue light answered. But it didn’t attack.

It reflected.

Every mirror caught the blue and threw it back. Not as a weapon. As a picture.

The picture of all of them. Together. In the Library.

The black lines stopped. Retreated.

The mirrors stopped screaming.

In the quiet, Elara dropped the scalpel. It shattered.

She pulled the mirror patch off her eye. Underneath, her eye was blue. Like Elux’s.

“I’m tired of cutting,” she said.

Elias handed her a cloth. She took it.

Riv opened his notebook. The pages were normal again. He wrote fast.

*FILE 18: ELARA. STATUS: ACTIVE. ROLE: THE SURGEON.*

A new blue thread, clean and precise, lanced across the map and locked into place.

From the network, Seven: “We just got a whole hospital wing online. Web integrity 89%.”

Elara looked at the team. At Elux.

“You’re not here to save one world,” she said.

“No,” Elux said. “I’m here to save all of them.”

She nodded once. “Then let me help.”

Brak grunted. “About time we got a medic.”

Elux smiled. The first real one since World-Δ.

He opened Riv’s notebook. The next page turned.

In the distance, another dot pulsed.

File 19.

And deeper, behind it, something else.

A black dot. Moving.

The Null King was done watching.
