ELUX : TALES OF HAILS AND FAILS

*Chapter 22: The Waiting World*

The fracture didn’t pull. It pressed.

Like stepping through warm water that didn’t want to let you go.

Elux, Riv, Kade, Elias, Brak, Elara, and Sora came out onto a rooftop.

Night. No stars.

Above them stretched a massive dome of dark glass, covering the entire city. And running through the glass were thin blue lines — fractures, but frozen solid. Like someone pressed pause on the sky.

“The network’s here,” Kade said, rubbing his temples. “But it’s asleep. Breathing, but not dreaming.”

Below them, the city moved. Cars. Lights. People. Everything looked normal.

Too normal.

Riv opened his notebook. The page filled instantly with ink that wasn’t his — a sketch of the dome, and in the center, a figure on a throne made of monitors.

“File 20,” Riv said. “And he’s not hiding. He’s watching.”

Sora held the book tighter. “He’s been waiting for us.”

The tallest tower had no guards. No locks. The doors just opened.

Inside, File 20 sat with his back to them. Wall to wall monitors. On every screen: a different Elux dying.

The soldier. The monk. The thief. File 12. File 3. File 7B.

Over and over.

He spun his chair.

Same face. Older. Dark circles under his eyes. A crown of cables ran from a headset into the ceiling.

“I know it’s you,” File 20 said. “I can hear you through 18 other versions.”

“File 20,” Elux said.

“Jax,” he said. “I’m The Watcher.”

Brak shifted. “You watching us die?”

Jax stood. The cables pulled. “I’m keeping them alive.” He gestured to the monitors. “Every time a version dies, I record it. I store them. 12,403 Eluxes. Memories. Last words. Choices.” He looked at Elux. “The Null King made a deal. I watch and record, and it doesn’t touch this dome. 8 billion people stay breathing.”

Elias went still. “You made a deal with it.”

“I made a choice,” Jax said. “What would you do, Gatekeeper?”

The speakers crackled.

_Watcher is the keystone,_ the Null King said. _Remove him, and I take the city._

Riv’s notebook was glitching. “He’s tied into the dome. If we pull him out, the whole thing collapses.”

Elux looked at the screens. At himself, dying in 12,403 different ways.

Then he looked at Jax.

“You’re not the Watcher,” Elux said quietly. “You’re the Witness. And you don’t have to do it alone.”

He raised his hands.

The blue light didn’t strike. It split.

One thread for every monitor. One thread for every death.

Elux took them in. All of it. The pain. The fear. The last breaths.

He didn’t look away.

Jax gasped. The cables around his head flickered. “It’s... it’s lighter.”

Kade put a hand on Jax’s shoulder. “We carry it with you now.”

The headset came off. The cables went dark. But the dome didn’t fall. The blue lines in the glass lit up instead, tying into Elux’s light.

From the speakers, the Null King screamed and cut out.

Riv’s notebook glowed.

*FILE 20: JAX. STATUS: ACTIVE. ROLE: THE WITNESS.*

A new blue thread, heavy and steady, anchored to the Library wall.

From the network, Seven: “Dome’s stable. Web integrity at 96%.”

Jax exhaled like he hadn’t in years. “I’ve watched us die long enough,” he said. “Let’s go save some of us.”

Elux nodded. He opened Riv’s notebook.

The next page was already turning on its own.

*File 21.*

And this dot wasn’t in a city. Or a desert.

It was deep. Under water.

Pulsing.

“Looks like we’re going for a swim,” Brak muttered.
