*Chapter 23: The Deep*
The fracture didn’t open into air.
It opened into pressure.
Elux, Riv, Kade, Elias, Brak, Elara, Jax, and Sora fell.
Straight down.
Water closed over them, black and cold and silent. No light. No sound except their own breathing and the creak of the Library’s fracture sealing above.
“Elias,” Elux said.
Elias didn’t speak. He just exhaled.
And the water around them went still. A bubble formed. Quiet. Perfect. Big enough for all eight of them.
“The Quiet,” Brak grunted, shaking water off his hammer. “Useful.”
Jax was already looking up, eyes white. “The network’s down here. But it’s... singing.”
Kade nodded. “I hear it too. Like a whale. Lonely.”
Riv’s notebook was dry inside the bubble. The page showed a sketch of a city under the ocean. Domes. Tubes. Lights.
And in the center, a figure sitting on a coral throne, holding a trident made of light.
“File 21,” Riv said. “And the dot isn’t moving. It’s waiting at the bottom.”
Sora opened the book. The last sentence pulsed: *As long as one story remains...*
“Then let’s go hear his,” Sora said.
They swam.
An hour down. Then two. The pressure should’ve crushed them. But Elux’s blue light wrapped around the bubble, holding.
The city came into view.
World-21D.
Glass domes. People walking on the streets like it was daytime. Schools. Markets. All under miles of ocean.
And above the city, tied to the surface by thick cables, hung the Null King’s shadow. Not here. Watching.
At the center plaza, on the coral throne, sat File 21.
He was younger than Elux. Maybe 16. Barefoot. Hair floating. And his eyes were closed.
He didn’t open them when they landed.
“I know you’re here,” File 21 said. His voice echoed in the water, but not through sound. Through the network. “I’ve been singing to you.”
“Elux,” Elux said.
“I’m Marin,” the boy said. “File 21. I’m The Singer.”
He finally opened his eyes. They were completely blue. No whites. No pupils. Just light.
“The Null King came 2 years ago,” Marin said. “Offered to drain the ocean. Give us air. One world, dry and safe.” He gestured to the city. “I said no. So it left me this instead.”
He pointed up. The cables.
“If I stop singing, the domes crack. If I keep singing, the Null King stays. Watching.”
Elara stepped forward. “You’ve been holding it up by yourself.”
“For 2 years,” Marin said. “I’m tired.”
The water trembled.
_Singer,_ the Null King’s voice vibrated through the ocean floor. _Stop. Let it break._
Marin winced. Blood ran from his nose.
“Don’t,” Elux said. He knelt in front of the throne. “Let us help you sing.”
Marin looked at him. “It’ll hurt. You’ll hear everything. Every person in this city. Their fear. Their hope.”
Elux held out his hand. The blue light met Marin’s.
And then the rest of them joined.
Kade drew the sound.
Riv mapped the notes.
Elias steadied the rhythm.
Brak gave it weight.
Elara healed the cracks in Marin’s voice.
Jax remembered every note before it.
Sora wrote it down so it wouldn’t be lost.
Eight voices. One song.
The water lit up.
The blue light traveled up the cables. Up to the surface. Up to the Null King’s shadow.
The shadow recoiled. _This is not silence._
“No,” Marin said, standing for the first time in 2 years. “It’s a chorus.”
The cables snapped. The shadow shattered.
Silence. Then cheering. From inside every dome.
Marin swayed. Elux caught him.
Riv’s notebook glowed.
*FILE 21: MARIN. STATUS: ACTIVE. ROLE: THE SINGER.*
A new blue thread, deep and resonant, shot across the map and locked into the Library.
From the network, Seven: “Ocean city stable. Web integrity 97%.”
Marin leaned on Elux, laughing weakly. “You’re all terrible singers.”
“Yeah,” Elux said, smiling. “But we’re loud.”
Sora closed the book. The next page turned.
*File 22.*
The dot was moving again.
Fast.
And it was leaving a trail of red behind it.
“Not good,” Jax said. “That’s blood.”
