*Chapter 24: The Red Trail*
The fracture opened to smoke.
Not water. Not air.
Heat. Ash. The smell of metal burning.
Elux coughed and hit his knees. Riv, Kade, Elias, Brak, Elara, Jax, Sora, and Marin stumbled out behind him.
World-22 was on fire.
A city of factories. Smokestacks bleeding black into an orange sky. Sirens. People running.
And across the rooftops, a red trail. Footprints. But not from feet.
From hands. Dragging.
“File 22,” Kade said immediately, pressing his palms to his ears. Blood trickled from his nose. “He’s hurt. Bad. And he’s scared of us.”
Riv’s notebook flipped open on its own. The sketch was messy. Frantic. A boy, maybe 17. Forge scars on his arms. And behind him, a shape made of knives.
“Not the Null King,” Riv said. “One of its Hunters. It’s been cutting him.”
Sora tightened his grip on the book. “Then why’s he running from us?”
Jax looked up. His eyes went white. “Because he thinks we’re the ones who sent it.”
They followed the red trail to the old foundry at the city center.
The doors were welded shut. From inside: pounding. Cursing. And a voice, raw.
“Stay back! I said stay back!”
Brak stepped up and ripped the doors off.
Inside was chaos. Conveyor belts still running. Fire everywhere.
And in the middle of it, File 22.
He had a welding torch in one hand and a piece of rebar in the other. Both were shaking.
His left arm was wrapped in bloody rags. Three deep cuts. Not clean. Jagged. Like something had tried to carve him.
Same face. Older, harder. Eyes full of smoke and anger.
“File 22,” Elux said, stepping forward with his hands up. “We’re not—”
“Don’t lie!” the boy shouted. He threw the rebar. It sparked off Brak’s hammer. “You’re with it! You’re all with it! It said if I didn’t give it the core, it’d take the city!”
He pointed to his chest. Tucked under his shirt, glowing faint red, was a fist-sized piece of metal. A heart. Beating.
Elara went still. “That’s not a weapon. That’s him.”
Marin nodded slowly. “He’s The Forge. He made a heart for his world. To keep the machines running. To keep people warm.”
The Null King’s voice came through the PA system, distorted and laughing.
_Forge. Give me the core. Or I take 2 million lives and make a new one from their bones._
The Hunter dropped from the ceiling. Not black lines this time. It was made of scrap. Blades for fingers. Its chest was open, and inside was a furnace.
It lunged for File 22.
“No!” File 22 screamed. He held up the glowing core like a shield.
Elux moved.
He didn’t hit the Hunter. He hit the space between them.
Blue light slammed down and trapped the Hunter in a cage of light.
File 22 stared at him. Breathing hard. “Why... why didn’t you take it?”
Elux knelt, ignoring the heat. “Because it’s yours. And we don’t take things from people. We help them carry them.”
File 22’s torch clattered to the ground. “It’s been chasing me for 3 days. I haven’t slept. I can’t... I can’t hold it anymore.”
“Then don’t,” Elux said. He held out both hands. “Let us help.”
For a long second, File 22 just stared. Then he placed the burning core in Elux’s hands.
It didn’t burn Elux. It warmed him.
The moment he touched it, he felt it — every factory worker. Every kid in the cold apartments. Every machine that kept this city alive.
All depending on this one heart.
Kade stepped up and put a hand on File 22’s good shoulder. “We’ll keep it beating.”
Riv mapped the heat so it wouldn’t overload.
Elias quieted the screaming machines.
Brak reinforced the foundry walls.
Elara sealed the cuts on File 22’s arm.
Jax remembered how the core was built so it couldn’t be copied.
Sora wrote down what it powered, so it would never be forgotten.
Marin hummed low, and the fire calmed.
Eight hands. One heart.
The blue light sank into the core. It stopped pulsing red and glowed steady blue.
The Hunter screeched and shattered. The furnace in its chest went cold.
From the speakers, the Null King hissed and cut out.
File 22 sagged. Elux caught him.
Riv’s notebook glowed.
*FILE 22: STATUS: ACTIVE. ROLE: THE FORGE.*
*CORE SECURED. WEB INTEGRITY: 98%*
A new blue thread, hot and steady, slammed into the Library wall.
Seven’s voice: “City’s stable. Power’s back. You did it.”
File 22 looked at his hands. No more blood. Just soot.
“Name’s Dray,” he said quietly. “I thought... I thought I’d have to die to keep it lit.”
Elux handed the core back. It was lighter now. “You don’t have to carry it alone.”
Dray managed a tired smile. “Good. Cause I’m starving.”
Sora opened the book. The next page turned.
*File 23.*
The dot was still.
In a hospital.
Surrounded by black dots.
“Not running,” Jax said. “Cornered.”
Elux stood. The core’s warmth stayed in his chest.
“Then we go " he said
