“Eldest Young Master, Madam asked me to bring you the hangover soup.”
Sister Yun’s hand holding the bowl trembled slightly.
Fu Tingshen looked at the bowl in her hand and took it.
In the next room, Luo Yunmian tightly clutched Fu Yanchi.
Her head was lowered, and though Fu Yanchi couldn’t see her eyes clearly, he knew she was crying.
Furious, he clenched his fists tightly and slammed one hand hard against the wall. A dull “thud” echoed unnaturally loud in the quiet room.
Suppressing his overwhelming anger, he questioned Luo Yunmian word by word: “Sister Mianmian, even after all this, are you still going to get engaged to him?”
Instead of an answer, the woman slowly slid down against the wall, finally squatting on the floor, letting out heart-wrenching, choked sobs.
The sound of her crying felt like an invisible hand gripping his heart. He felt a suffocating tightness in his chest and a sudden panic, filled with regret, wondering if he had said the wrong thing again.
He crouched down, instinctively reaching out to help Luo Yunmian, to touch her. But halfway, afraid she might get angry, his hand froze mid-air.
After much hesitation, he finally gritted his teeth, pulled the woman into his arms, and held her tightly.
Luo Yunmian seemed to have finally found an outlet for her emotions. She clenched her small fists and began pounding on him, blow after blow.
He didn’t know how long she kept hitting him, but eventually, Luo Yunmian grew tired and leaned against Fu Yanchi’s chest.
He heard her sniffle, her voice broken and fragile.
“Yan Chi, I’m going ahead with the engagement.”
He heard the sound of his own heart shattering. Suppressing his obsessive thoughts, he closed his eyes.
Then he heard the woman’s voice, filled with resolve.
“But I won’t marry him, and I won’t have children with him.”
“If I want to gather evidence of his infidelity and expose his despicable intentions to the public, will you stop me?”
A moment ago, Fu Yanchi’s heart was filled with bitterness, as if his life had suddenly plunged into a dark, endless hell. But the next moment, hearing the woman’s words filled with strong purpose, when he opened his eyes, the dim light in them instantly brightened.
Placing his hands on her shoulders, his tone cautious yet tinged with hidden anticipation, he stared into her eyes.
“So, Sister Mianmian, have you given up on him?”
Luo Yunmian took a deep breath, trying to calm her emotions, though her voice still carried a trace of unconcealable sorrow.
“Yes. The reason I’m so heartbroken is that I feel the past six years were utterly worthless.”
She paused for a long moment, forced to face herself.
“You were right. My judgment in men is truly terrible.”
After saying this, she let out a self-mocking, bitter smile.
“Sister Mianmian, I’ll help you.”
“Even if I do something utterly outrageous at the engagement party, will you still help me?”
Fu Yanchi tentatively reached out to wipe the tears from the corner of her eye. Seeing she didn’t resist, he breathed a sigh of relief.
“Just go ahead and do it.”
Less than five days remained until the engagement party.
Luo Yunmian’s eyes were slightly swollen, with faint dark circles beneath her eyelids—clear traces of last night’s tears.
She seemed somewhat desolate, her hands hanging weakly at her sides, the crisscrossing blood vessels in her eyes clearly visible.
The morning sunlight streamed through the window into the room, but she paid no mind to the rare beautiful weather.
It was the weekend, and unlike usual, she didn’t go downstairs to have breakfast with her family. Instead, she sat alone at her vanity, picking up foundation and gently applying it to the corners of her eyes.
After a simple touch-up, she put on a pair of sunglasses, hiding her eyes behind the dark lenses.
No one from her family came upstairs to disturb her either. Taking advantage of the fact that no one at home was paying attention, Luo Yunmian quietly slipped out of the house.
She got into the car, started the engine alone, and slowly drove out of the courtyard.
Eventually, the car stopped in front of a private detective agency. She sat quietly inside, looking through her sunglasses at the five large characters on the door: “Bobo Detective Agency.”
For some reason, the name felt rather slapdash.
The address had been given to her by Fu Yanchi yesterday, and she was starting to doubt the professionalism of this agency.
Why had she trusted that little brat’s words and come here?
When she pushed open the glass door and walked inside, the place was actually quite elegant. An antique screen stood not far away, painted with a delicate landscape scene.
On one side were a few potted green plants, and in the center was a large desk with a computer on it.
Looking further inside, several comfortable sofas were placed against the wall, casually draped with a few cushions bearing subtle patterns.
Just then, a figure emerged from behind the screen. It was a young-looking man wearing a loose hoodie.
He had a baseball cap on his head, the brim pulled low, hiding most of his face in shadow. Only his sharply defined jaw and slightly pursed thin lips were visible.
Luo Yunmian couldn’t help but pause, instinctively reaching up to adjust her sunglasses.
She seriously wondered if she had come to the wrong place.
Frowning, she was about to turn and leave when the man spoke, his voice carrying the crisp clarity unique to youth.
“Miss, may I ask what brings you to the detective agency?”
Luo Yunmian stood still, scanning the surroundings once more before replying in a calm tone, “Are you sure this is a detective agency?”
The person being questioned casually sat down in a swivel chair, which spun halfway under his weight with a faint creak.
Then, his somewhat nonchalant voice rang out, “Even a blind person could see the ‘Bobo Detective Agency’ sign outside. Since you found your way here, you must have some trouble you need solved.”
Seeing his laid-back, unruly demeanor, Luo Yunmian’s heart skipped a beat, and Fu Yanchi’s image involuntarily surfaced in her mind.
The two of them really did share some similarities.
She took a deep breath, quickly composed herself, stepped forward, pulled out the chair opposite, and sat down.
Taking two photos from her bag, she pushed them toward the young man.
“I want to hire you to secretly follow these two. Record their daily whereabouts, what they do, especially any intimate contact, down to the smallest detail. Keep complete video records as well. Can you do it?”
The person across the table glanced at the photos on the desk. When he looked up, the corners of his mouth lifted into a slightly playful curve.
“With all this, could it be that your boyfriend has someone else?”
Then he casually picked up the photos on the table, took a closer look, and clicked his tongue. “This woman is so old.”
“That’s none of your concern. I’m only asking if you can do it, if you can take this job,” Luo Yunmian said, her brows furrowed, her tone growing colder.
“Hey, sis is still a thorny rose, huh? Of course it’s doable!”
He then suddenly sat up straight, “As long as sis is willing to pay enough, I guarantee it’ll be done beautifully.”
In the end, Luo Yunmian added him on WeChat, exchanged phone numbers, and got up to leave.
When the man walked behind the screen, a cup came flying toward him with a whoosh.
He nimbly dodged to the side.
