He blinked his one unobstructed eye.
The object didn’t move.
Slowly, carefully, without moving his head, he tilted his gaze downward.
Curled up in a tiny ball on his chest was a child.
A little girl, no older than six, wearing a faded, oversized t-shirt that said "Princess In Training" in peeling glitter letters.
She was dead asleep.
Her breathing was slow and even, her chubby cheeks flushed, and a tiny string of drool was pooling on the Kevlar plating over his heart.
One of her legs was sprawled lazily upward, resting comfortably across his face like he was a giant body pillow.
Adrian’s brain, which had just survived neurotoxins, zombie viruses, and a spontaneous elemental awakening, completely short-circuited.
What... what am I looking at?

Ten minutes prior,
Dia’s perspective.
The moment the transport unit had consumed exactly three swallows of the strawberry milk, Dia snatched the bottle back.
"That is sufficient hydration for basic motor function recovery," she stated, firmly capping the bottle and hugging it to her chest. She had sacrificed approximately 15% of the total volume.
It was a steep price, but it was necessary.
[DING! ✧・゚: ✧・゚:]
The System screen suddenly erupted into a blinding display of fireworks, digital confetti raining down all over the dark garage.
[HIDDEN QUEST UNLOCKED AND COMPLETED: SHARING IS CARING!]
[Description: In the brutal apocalypse, selfishness is the norm! But you, Host, despite your tragic past and intense desire for the strawberry milk, chose to share your precious loot with a dying stranger! Your profound empathy has moved the System to tears!]
A holographic 3D model of the System mascot, a floating marshmallow with eyes, appeared and blew into a digital tissue.
[Calculating Hidden Reward... Error! Empathy levels exceed standard parameters! Upgrading reward tier!]
[Hidden Reward Distributed!]
[1x Interdimensional Pacifier (Can silence any beast below Tier 5 when inserted into their oral cavity)!]
[1x "My First Armory" Spatial Ring (Disguised as a plastic Ring Pop)!]
[Passive Buff Acquired: "Aura of Innocence" (Enemies have a 50% chance of feeling extreme guilt before attacking you)!]
A large, gaudy plastic ring with a massive, fake ruby materialized and dropped into Dia’s lap.
Dia picked it up, analyzing the crystalline structure of the fake gem. "A spatial storage device disguised as cheap polymer jewelry. Inefficient design, but practical for concealment."
She slipped the Ring Pop onto her tiny thumb, as it was too big for any of her other fingers.
With a thought, she stored the half-empty bottle of strawberry milk inside the spatial dimension.
"Quest parameters fulfilled. Logistics secured," Dia muttered, rubbing her eyes.
Suddenly, a wave of crushing exhaustion washed over her.
It wasn’t the fatigue of a long day; it was the terrifying, biological shutdown sequence of a toddler’s body. Her newly acquired host form had been starved, thrown out of a moving vehicle, forced into a high-speed sprint to escape zombies, and had just experienced the emotional high of consuming pure sugar.
The ATP reserves were entirely depleted.
Her tiny brain was demanding an immediate reboot.
The dreaded "Sugar Crash" had arrived.
Her eyelids drooped. She swayed on her feet.
"System," Dia slurred, her usually crisp, monotone voice turning soft and fuzzy. "Biological shutdown imminent. Require safe... docking station."
She looked around the garage.
It was cold, damp, and covered in filth.
Her mind calculated the optimal resting variables: she needed elevation to avoid ground-level pests, needed thermal insulation to prevent hypothermia, and a close proximity to her newly acquired perimeter defense system, the Guardian.
Her heavy gaze fell upon the massive man lying on the floor.
Analysis, she thought, her brain operating on 1% battery power. Target’s chest cavity is broad and elevated above the damp concrete. Target’s internal core temperature is elevated due to recent cellular regeneration. Target is soft... well, softer than the floor. Target is an optimal mattress.
Without a second thought, and lacking any concept of personal space or social boundaries, Dia crawled forward.
She climbed over the man’s heavy tactical belt, ignoring the array of deadly throwing knives strapped to his thigh. She hoisted herself onto his chest, the Kevlar plating surprisingly warm beneath her small hands.
She curled into a tight ball, her knees tucked to her chest. She wiggled a little, adjusting her position until her head was resting perfectly over the rhythmic, powerful thumping of his newly stabilized heart.
It was a steady, soothing metronome.
In her sleepy, uncoordinated state, one of her legs slipped upward, her oversized sneaker flopping directly across the bridge of the man’s nose.
Comfort level: Acceptable, Dia thought dimly.
And within two seconds, Subject 404, the terrifyingly logical reincarnated lab rat, was dead to the world, snoring softly.
Back to the present,
Adrian stared at the peeling glitter letters of the "Princess In Training" shirt. He could feel the child’s small, rhythmic breaths against his chest. He could feel the boneless weight of a sleeping toddler pinning him to the floor.
He slowly raised a trembling, blood-stained hand, the hand that had snapped the necks of Tier-4 Mutants, and gently, with the utmost precision of a bomb disposal expert, lifted the tiny sneaker off his face.
He lowered the child’s leg to his chest, taking extreme care not to wake her.
He lay there in the silence of the underground garage, the distant, muffled groans of zombies echoing from the streets above.
He reviewed the facts.
Fact one: He had been betrayed and left for dead.
Fact two: He was miraculously healed, completely cured of the zombie virus, and had awakened an S-Rank Lightning Core.
Fact three: The legendary healing artifact that saved his life was currently plastered to the center of his forehead. He reached up with his free hand and touched it. It was a band-aid. It even had cute little dinosaurs drawn on it.
Fact four: He had been force-fed strawberry milk.
Fact five: The most dangerous, ruthless warlord in Sector 4 was currently being used as a mattress by a child who smelled like baby shampoo.
