The silence after the battle was more terrifying than the battle itself.

Elias stood motionless inside the abandoned laboratory, staring at the corpse of the creature that had almost ended his life.

The monster’s body lay across the cracked floor, its twisted limbs still twitching from leftover nerve activity.Full novel: False Rescue Project Chimera — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Thick black blood slowly spread beneath it, staining the once-clean research facility.

A reminder.

This thing had once been human.

That thought bothered him more than the monster itself.

Every creature they killed had a past.

Someone they loved.

Someone waiting for them to return.

But somewhere along the way, humanity had been replaced by something else.

Elias tightened his grip around his weapon.

He wanted to believe this was just a disaster.

A virus.

An unfortunate accident.

Something humanity could overcome.

But every discovery pushed him further away from that belief.

The infected were changing.

Learning.

Adapting.

And someone had been watching.

“Elias.”

The voice pulled him away from his thoughts.

He turned.

Noah stood near the entrance of the laboratory, breathing heavily.

His clothes were torn, his face covered with dirt, but his eyes were still focused.

Still alive.

That alone was becoming a victory.

“You hurt?” Noah asked.

Elias looked down at the scratches on his arm.

“Nothing serious.”

Noah glanced at the dead creature.

“That’s what you said last time.”

Elias didn’t answer.

Because Noah was right.

Every battle left something behind.

A scar.

A memory.

A reminder that they were slowly running out of chances.

Noah approached the body carefully.

“This one is different.”

Elias nodded.

“Yeah.”

The two stared at the monster.

Unlike previous infected, this creature’s mutations were not random.

Its bones had reinforced themselves into natural armor.

Its muscles had developed in specific areas.

Its claws were designed for combat.

It wasn’t simply changing.

It was improving.

Elias crouched beside it.

“The others mutated because their bodies were breaking down.”

He touched the hardened bone structure.

“This one mutated because it was trying to survive.”

Noah’s expression darkened.

“You mean it evolved?”

Elias stayed silent.

But that silence answered the question.

The possibility was worse than any monster they had faced.

If the infected continued evolving…

Humanity would eventually become prey.

A small electronic sound interrupted them.

Elias looked at his wrist device.

A message appeared.

UNKNOWN SIGNAL DETECTED

His heartbeat slowed.

The device had been inactive for days.

No signals.

No communication.

No hope.

Until now.

Noah noticed.

“What is it?”

Elias stared at the screen.

“Someone is transmitting.”

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

The idea of finding survivors should have brought relief.

But Elias had learned something important.

Hope could be a weapon.

And someone had already used it against them.

The fake rescue signal.

The abandoned evacuation point.

The people who promised salvation…

Only to turn survivors into experiments.

Project Chimera.

The name still burned in his memory.

A speaker above them suddenly activated.

Static filled the room.

Then a calm voice spoke.

“Subject Elias.”

The entire room went silent.

Noah immediately raised his weapon.

“Elias…”

The voice continued.

“Your survival rate has exceeded expectations.”

Elias stepped forward.

“Who are you?”

A pause.

Then the voice replied.

“You already know.”

His expression hardened.

“No.

I don’t.”

“You survived the first outbreak stage.”

Static.

“You survived the infected.”

Another pause.

“You survived the hunters.”

The speaker crackled.

“But now I want to see if you can survive the truth.”

The hallway lights suddenly turned on.

One by one.

Leading deeper underground.

A path.

An invitation.

Or a trap.

Noah lowered his weapon slightly.

“This is obviously a trap.”

“I know.”

“Then why are we going?”

Elias looked into the darkness.

Because running would not change anything.

Because whoever was behind this already knew who he was.

And because the answers they needed were waiting below.

“We need to know what happened.”

Noah sighed.

“You’re really bad at staying away from dangerous places.”

Elias almost smiled.

Almost.

Then they entered.

The underground facility was different from the rest.

The upper levels were destroyed.

Abandoned.

Dead.

But this place…

Was alive.

The machines still operated.

The lights still worked.

Someone had maintained this area.

Recently.

Elias moved carefully through the corridor.

Glass chambers lined the walls.

Each one contained information.

Experiments.

Failed subjects.

Human trials.

Then he saw the words written across a large screen.

PROJECT CHIMERA

OBJECTIVE: HUMAN EVOLUTION THROUGH CONTROLLED MUTATION

Elias stopped.

His stomach tightened.

Controlled mutation.

They weren’t trying to stop the virus.

They weren’t trying to cure humanity.

They were trying to change it.

Noah read the information beside him.

“They created these things?”

Elias looked at the endless rows of research files.

“Yes.”

His voice became colder.

“Someone created the apocalypse.”

The lights flickered.

A nearby chamber activated.

Inside was a person.

A woman.

Alive.

Noah immediately stepped forward.

“Someone survived.”

But Elias didn’t move.

Something was wrong.

The woman wasn’t like the other infected.

She was connected to machines, but her body showed signs of mutation.

Black veins covered parts of her skin.

Her eyes were unnatural.

Yet she was still conscious.

She looked at them.

Fear filled her expression.

Not anger.

Not hunger.

Fear.

Her hand pressed against the glass.

Her lips moved.

Elias stepped closer.

“What are you saying?”

The woman struggled.

Then whispered.

“Don’t trust them.”

Elias froze.

Before he could respond, she pointed upward.

Toward the cameras.

Someone was watching.

The woman’s expression changed.

Terror.

“Run…”

The alarms activated.

CONTAINMENT FAILURE

CHIMERA RESPONSE DETECTED

The chamber beside her shattered.

Something stepped out.

Slowly.

Heavy footsteps echoed through the laboratory.

Noah aimed his weapon.

“What is that?”

Elias couldn’t answer.

Because for the first time…

He saw something that looked impossible.

The creature was not like the infected.

It stood upright.

It moved with purpose.

Its body was covered in black biological armor, but beneath the mutation were traces of human structure.

A face.

A hand.

Eyes that understood.

The creature looked at Elias.

Not like prey.

Like it recognized him.

Then it spoke.

A broken, distorted voice escaped its mouth.

“Elias…”

Both men froze.

The monster knew his name.

The speakers activated again.

The same calm voice returned.

“Congratulations.”

“You have reached the final observation phase.”

Elias stared at the creature.

“What did you do?”

The voice answered:

“We created the next stage of humanity.”

The creature stepped forward.

The entire facility shook.

“You wanted to know what Project Chimera created.”

A pause.

Then:

“Now you can see the answer.”

The monster roared.

The sound shook the walls.

And Elias finally understood.

The creatures outside were never the true threat.

They were only failed experiments.

This…

This was the future Project Chimera wanted.

A world where humans no longer existed.

Only survivors…

And monsters.
