The roar shook the laboratory.

Glass chambers exploded one after another as invisible shockwaves rippled through the underground facility.

Shards rained across the polished floor, alarms blaring in chaotic harmony with the creature’s deafening cry.Full novel: False Rescue Project Chimera — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Elias didn’t move.

He couldn’t.

Standing less than twenty meters away was something that shouldn’t exist.

The creature stood over two meters tall, its body wrapped in black biological armor that resembled overlapping plates of obsidian.

Thick tendrils pulsed beneath the armor like veins carrying molten blood.

One arm ended in elongated claws, while the other retained a disturbingly human hand.

Its face was the most horrifying part.

Half of it still looked human.

The other half had transformed into a grotesque fusion of exposed muscle, bone, and dark crystal-like growths.

One amber eye studied Elias with unnerving intelligence.

Recognition.

Not hunger.

Recognition.

“Elias…”

Its distorted voice echoed through the chamber like two voices speaking at once.

Noah’s face paled.

“It…

it talked.”

The creature slowly tilted its head, as if studying their reactions.

The speakers overhead crackled.

“Prototype Chimera Unit Zero,” the calm voice announced.

“Behavioral observation sequence initiated.”

Elias finally found his voice.

“You’re controlling it?”

“No.”

The reply came almost immediately.

“We’re observing it.”

A chill crawled down Elias’s spine.

The distinction mattered.

If no one was controlling the creature…

Then every decision it made belonged to its own will.

Without warning, Unit Zero vanished.

A violent gust of wind slammed into Elias before his mind could process what happened.

Too fast!

He instinctively raised his weapon.

CRASH!

A massive claw struck the reinforced metal blade, sending him flying across the room.

His back smashed against a steel cabinet before he crashed onto the floor.

Pain exploded through his ribs.

“Elias!”

Noah fired three shots.

Bang!

Bang!

Bang!

The bullets struck Unit Zero’s shoulder.

Metallic sparks erupted.

The creature didn’t even flinch.

Instead, it slowly turned toward Noah.

Its amber eye narrowed.

Then it smiled.

“Run!” Elias shouted.

Noah dove behind a laboratory table just as Unit Zero crossed the room in a blur.

The heavy steel table folded in half under a single strike.

Steel.

Folded like cardboard.

Noah rolled across the floor, barely escaping another claw that carved deep trenches into the concrete.

“What the hell is this thing?”

“It’s learning,” Elias answered through gritted teeth.

During every attack…

The creature adjusted.

It wasn’t swinging wildly.

It predicted movement.

Testing them.

Like a hunter measuring prey.

Or…

An examiner grading subjects.

The female test subject slammed her fist weakly against the glass chamber.

“Leave!”

Her voice was barely audible through the alarms.

“You…

can’t…

win…”

Elias looked toward her.

Unlike the Chimera, fear filled her eyes.

Not for herself.

For them.

The overhead voice returned.

“Subject Nine continues displaying emotional instability.”

A mechanical hiss echoed through the laboratory.

The woman’s chamber began draining its preservation fluid.

“No…” she whispered.

Her expression changed from fear to desperation.

“Elias!”

She knew his name.

Before he could react, emergency locks disengaged.

Her chamber door slowly opened.

She stumbled onto the floor, coughing violently.

Her hospital gown was stained with dried blood, and black veins spread across her neck like roots beneath pale skin.

She looked infected.

Yet somehow…

She remained human.

Noah rushed toward her.

“Can you stand?”

She nodded weakly.

“Listen carefully…”

She grabbed Noah’s sleeve with surprising strength.

“Don’t let it touch you.”

He frowned.

“The infected?”

She shook her head.

“The Chimera.”

Her trembling gaze shifted toward Unit Zero.

“It doesn’t spread infection.”

“It rewrites you.”

Unit Zero stopped moving.

Its attention shifted toward the woman.

For the first time, emotion appeared on its monstrous face.

Confusion.

Then…

Recognition.

“Subject…”

The distorted word echoed across the laboratory.

The woman froze.

Tears welled in her eyes.

“No…”

The creature took one slow step forward.

“…Nine.”

Its voice sounded almost gentle.

As though it remembered.

The overhead observer spoke again.

“Interesting.”

“Residual human memory remains active.”

Elias’s heart sank.

The creature wasn’t merely intelligent.

It remembered people.

Fragments of its former life still existed inside that monstrous body.

How many more were out there?

Without warning, the laboratory lights turned red.

WARNING

FACILITY LOCKDOWN INITIATED

Massive blast doors slammed shut throughout the complex.

Escape routes disappeared one after another.

Noah cursed.

“They’re trapping us!”

“They don’t want us escaping,” Elias replied.

The voice corrected him.

“Incorrect.”

A brief silence followed.

“We’re preventing contamination from leaving the facility.”

Elias looked toward the ceiling.

“You caused all this!”

Another pause.

Then the same calm response.

“History is written by survivors.”

The words ignited something inside Elias.

Anger.

Real anger.

For the first time since the outbreak began, he wasn’t facing a mindless monster.

He was facing the people responsible.

Subject Nine suddenly grabbed Elias’s arm.

“There isn’t much time.”

She struggled to stay standing.

“They’re waking the others.”

“What others?” Noah asked.

She looked toward the rows of sealed containment chambers stretching into the darkness.

Her lips trembled.

“There were twelve prototypes.”

Elias’s blood ran cold.

He slowly counted the intact chambers lining the walls.

One…

Two…

Three…

Most remained sealed.

Only Unit Zero stood outside.

Subject Nine lowered her voice to a whisper.

“Zero was the first successful evolution.”

Her eyes filled with dread.

“He isn’t…”

“…the strongest.”

Deep within the facility, something heavy struck a reinforced door.

Once.

Twice.

Then silence.

No one moved.

Even Unit Zero turned its head toward the distant sound.

As though listening.

As though waiting.

And then…

Another roar echoed from somewhere far below the laboratory.

It was deeper.

Louder.

Older.

Subject Nine closed her eyes.

“They’re awake…”
