My mother took the stairs with Captain Li.

Nick alone remained in the hallway, instantly swarmed by reporters.Full novel: Family Devoured – NTR — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

“My Aunt Lydia no, Secretary Lydia is incredible.

She took down the criminal all by herself and even offered to exchange herself for my dad.

She’s amazing, really amazing.” He shouted this into every microphone before bolting for the elevator.

Watching Nick deliberately hand all the credit to my mother, I cursed him silently.

He’d taken advantage and a huge one at that.

No, he’d already taken worse liberties.

As he squeezed in just before the doors closed, the jealousy in my chest congealed into something darker.

“Brother‑in‑Law, that was pretty loyal of me, huh?

I gave all the credit to Aunt Lydia.” His dopey, humble grin made my stomach churn.

“Dad’s still in there.

Let’s get to the hospital.” I looked at his black face and felt my anger spike.

The bastard had groped and kissed my mother and grabbed my Mother‑in‑law’s ass in front of me, then stood there playing the good son.

… Summer 2023.

The afternoon of the banquet.

Outside the emergency room at Handong Xiehe Hospital.

I held Diana in my arms, but my eyes kept flicking to Helen and Nick.

That damned black man had dared put his hands on my mother.

The scene in the hall replayed in my mind: that vile mouth clamped over my mother’s lips, licking and sucking, his hand mauling her full, yielding breast.

My mother and my wife were the most important women in my life.

Yet I’d stood there, forced to watch my mother defiled and unable to move.

Shame and rage knotted together in my chest, and the fire of vengeance roared higher and higher.

But when I looked at Helen, anxiously staring toward the emergency room door, my anger faltered.

She and Nick stood together like any ordinary mother and son, both waiting for news of the man at the center of their family.

Had she already forgotten what had just happened in the hall?

He’d pawed her plump, fleshy rump with that same hand.

Yet she acted as if nothing had occurred.

Was she simply determined not to air dirty laundry?

Or did Nick have some other hold over her, forcing her to pretend nothing had happened?

The thought made my heart pound faster.

My brows furrowed deeper.

Clack.

The red light over the emergency room door flicked off.

Every nerve in our little group tightened.

“How is my husband?” As soon as the door swung open, Helen rushed at the first figure in green scrubs.

“Don’t worry.

He had a heart attack brought on by the shock, but you got him here in time.

He’s stable for the moment, but still not out of danger.

He’ll need to be monitored in the hospital for a while.” The doctor pulled off her mask.

I froze.

My mouth hung open; I couldn’t form a word.

It was my first love from university, the white moon in my heart: Wendy Mu.

When she saw me holding Diana, her own pale, pretty face flashed with equal shock.

In that instant, six eyes tangled in the air, and memories flew up like dust.

Even Helen, frantic as she was, sensed that something was off and blinked.

“You know each other?” “No.” “No.” Diana and Wendy answered in perfect unison.

They might as well have shouted “Yes.” Mother‑in‑law’s gaze speared me.

I forced a crooked smile, about to mumble something, anything “Please don’t worry.

Xiehe is one of the top hospitals in the country, and given Mr.

Gerald’s status, several experts have already consulted on his case.

We’ll have more definitive information once he’s fully awake and we can run additional tests.” Wendy’s fox‑bright eyes flicked sideways at me.

As she walked past, she gave a soft, disdainful snort and brushed shoulders with us, leaving me with my embarrassment written all over my face.

“Ah ” A sharp pain stabbed my side as someone pinched the flesh at my waist.

I hissed and turned to see my wife’s cold, smiling face.

“You still dare say you didn’t know her?” I felt like crying.

How was any of this my fault?

I had no idea Wendy had returned to China, much less that she’d become a doctor here.

“Sis, even I can see Brother‑in‑Law knows that pretty doctor.” Everyone clearly wanted to pretend nothing had happened.

Nick, as always, picked exactly the wrong thing to say.

I shot him a murderous glare.

“Shut up.

No one asked you.” His eyes widened.

He scratched his head, pulling a wounded puppy face, and backed away.

Pain stabbed my side again as my wife dug her nails into my waist a second time.

“You dare do it and no one’s allowed to talk about it, is that it?” “What did I do?” I wanted to scream at the sky.

“Honey, yes, Wendy was my first love.

But that’s all in the past.” Mother‑in‑law sighed and stepped in.

“Dee, let it go.

The past is the past.

And you, Wes yes, it was surprising, but did you have to stare at her like that?” Only then did I realize that was the problem.

I looked back at my wife with an apologetic grin, ready to grovel, but the doors swung open again and they wheeled my father‑in‑law out, oxygen mask across his face.

All of us rushed into the high‑class private room behind him, every face tight with worry.

By the time we finished dealing with visits from board members, officials, and family friends, it was past ten that night.

As soon as we got home, Diana tossed her bag on the sofa and announced she was taking a shower.

I was exhausted, but watching her walk away stirred an immediate heat in my chest.

My head was spinning with everything that had happened, but one image kept floating up: Wendy’s face.

We’d grown up together as childhood sweethearts.

Our fathers had been comrades in arms; our families had been close.

Once, it had seemed inevitable we’d marry.

Then, in our third year of university, my father and Uncle had gone fishing together and died in a car accident on the way back.

My world fell apart overnight, and my relationship with Wendy ended abruptly at twenty‑two.
