At seven in the evening, Jake Reynolds arrived at the back entrance of the Toretto Garage.

He hadn’t come empty-handed.

He brought a case of ice-cold Corona beer and a small jar of his signature barbecue sauce, a recipe he’d perfected based on memories from his past life.Full novel: Fast & Furious: I Tuned Dom’s Charger and Stole His Sister — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

The backyard was already alive with activity.

Smoke rose from a massive grill, carrying the mouthwatering aroma of seared meat.

Dominic stood behind it, his focus absolute as he flipped steaks and sausages, treating them with the same precision he’d give a finely tuned engine.

Music floated through the air, not the loud hip-hop one might expect, but something with reggae and funk rhythms, creating a relaxed and warm atmosphere.

“Jake!

Over here!” Mia spotted him first, her face breaking into a bright smile as she hurried over.

She’d changed into a loose flannel shirt, sleeves rolled casually to her elbows, looking far more relaxed than she had during the day.

Jake handed over the beer and sauce.

“Just a small contribution.” “Wow, you actually brought stuff!” Mia laughed, taking them with genuine delight.

She gave the sauce jar a curious look.

“I’m definitely trying this later.” She guided him naturally toward the group.

Jake could feel several pairs of eyes land on him at once: curious, assessing, welcoming.

“Everyone, this is Jake.

He’s the new tuner from next door, and he’s seriously good.” Mia’s voice carried a hint of quiet pride as she introduced him to her “family.” “Hey, Mia mentioned you.

Welcome.” The first to respond was Letty.

She had sun-kissed skin and thick, dark hair.

Her gaze was sharp and open, like a sleek panther.

She raised her beer bottle in a casual toast, a knowing, friendly smile tugging at her lips.

“Thanks.” Jake nodded back, sensing her warmth.

“I’m Vince.” A stocky man with a rough, direct demeanor stepped forward.

His assessment was unabashed and calculating, the natural suspicion of a veteran toward a newcomer.

“So you know cars?

What’s your style?

Japanese?

American?” His question carried the street’s typical tribal divisions.

Before Jake could answer, a slimmer guy in a cap cut in.

“Hey, Vince, don’t grill the guy the second he walks in.” He turned to Jake with a friendly handshake.

“I’m Jesse.

I mostly work on Hondas.

Mia says you’re an ECU wizard.

Think you could take a look at my B16A red-top sometime?” Jake shook his hand and answered Vince’s earlier question with calm composure.

“I don’t really pick sides.

To me, whether it’s American torque, Japanese high-rev, or German precision, they’re all just tools.

What matters is what the person behind the wheel wants to say with them.” The answer caught Vince off guard.

He paused, apparently unable to find a counterpoint, and muttered, “That’s pretty deep.” Dominic had remained behind the grill the whole time, not participating much in the small talk.

But Jake could sense he was listening.

When Jake said “what they want to say,” Dom’s spatula seemed to pause, just slightly.

The party continued.

Jake didn’t try to show off.

He mostly listened, only occasionally offering a sharp, professional observation when Jesse and another member named Leon debated turbo lag.

Each comment sparked deeper interest from Jesse.

He helped Letty carry a case of drinks.

He listened to Vince boast about almost beating a Mustang the previous week, though Letty gleefully pointed out he’d still lost by half a car length.

He watched the unspoken bond between Mia and Dom, that wordless family connection.

All of it felt real and warm in a way that no film frame could fully capture.

As for Mia, watching Jake discuss tech with Jesse, she noticed his steady, unhurried way of speaking, his focused eyes.

That calm, inner confidence.

And she remembered being in the car with him during the test drive, the closed space filled with only the sound of the engine and his guiding voice.

That feeling…

it was something special.

“How are you holding up?

Getting used to it?” Mia had settled into the empty chair beside him at some point, handing him a freshly opened beer.

“Great,” Jake said, clinking his bottle against hers.

“Your family…

they’re interesting.

And real.” “They’re just a bunch of engine and speed junkies,” Mia laughed, but her tone was full of affection.

“But they’re my family.” She paused, looking at him.

“You seem to fit right in.

Jesse practically worships you already.” “Just happens I know a few things they care about.” Jake took a sip of beer, his gaze drifting to the red Toyota Supra in the center of the yard, maintained like a family heirloom.

“Beautiful car.” “That’s Dom’s pride,” Mia said, following his gaze with a hint of reverence.

“It’s a symbol of his past.

And some…

important promises.” Jake nodded, not pressing further.

He knew about those promises.

The father.

The fire on the track.

His unspoken understanding seemed to put Mia at ease.

As the night deepened, the music shifted to something more mellow.

A few people started dancing.

Vince tried to ask Letty, only to get shut down with a glare.

Jesse was still peppering Jake with questions about variable valve timing systems.

Mia watched Jake’s patient profile, the line of his jaw sharp under the interplay of string lights and moonlight.

An impulse rose.

“Hey, want to get some air?

I know a place with a great view of the city lights at night.” It was a clear, personal invitation.

Jake met her gaze and saw anticipation there, mixed with that signature Mia Toretto boldness.

He smiled.

“Sure.

Your car?” “Obviously.” Mia stood, her eyes bright.

They let Dom and Letty know they were heading out for a quick drive.

Dom glanced at them, said nothing, just gave a small nod.

Letty shot Mia a knowing, amused look.

Late-night LA roads were quiet.

Mia drove the 240SX, its responses now sharp and intuitive thanks to Jake’s tuning.

She didn’t drive fast.

Instead, she cruised in a relaxed rhythm through the winding mountain roads.

Eventually, they pulled over at a scenic overlook.

Below them, Los Angeles sprawled like a river of diamonds, its lights flickering silently.

“Great view from here,” Jake said softly, breaking the silence.

“I come here when I’m feeling down, or when I need to think.” Mia leaned back against the hood, hands behind her, gazing at the stars.

“Out here, all my problems feel small.

Like…

right now.” Her last words were almost to herself.

“Sometimes distance gives you perspective,” Jake agreed.

He turned to look at her.

Moonlight traced the gentle curve of her profile.

“Thanks for bringing me here, Mia.

And thanks for tonight’s invitation.” Mia turned to meet his eyes.

In the starlight and the glow of the distant city, her gaze was exceptionally bright, carrying a mix of open curiosity and deepening warmth.

“I’m the one who should be thanking you,” she said, her voice softer now.

“For the tune.

And for…

what happened the other day.” They stood close.

Close enough for Jake to see the shadow of her long lashes, to catch the faint scent of her hair.

Something unspoken stirred in the quiet night, quieter than an engine’s roar, but far more powerful.

“Jake,” Mia asked softly, curious, “why did you choose to open a shop here, of all places?” It was a question about his past, his motives.

Jake knew he couldn’t tell the whole truth.

But he could give an answer that was real in its own way, one that would resonate.

He looked out at the glittering city below, his voice calm and distant: “Because I believe every engine has a story it wants to tell.

And behind every steering wheel, there’s a destination someone is trying to reach.

I want to be the one who helps them tell that story, find that direction.

And here…

it feels like a place where stories begin.” The words were poetic, understated.

And they struck something deep in Mia, something tied to her family, her brother, and everything the street-racing culture meant to her.

She looked at his silhouette and asked no more questions.

Somewhere in her chest, something had been quietly touched.

“A place where stories begin…” Mia murmured to herself.

“Will mine take a different path now, because of him?” The drive back was quieter, but the air inside the car felt warmer, closer.

When the 240SX pulled up outside Jake’s shop again, it was late.

“Tonight was great,” Mia said, stepping out and standing by the driver’s door.

“Thanks for the sauce.

And for…

the view.” “The pleasure was mine,” Jake said, standing before her.

“So…

next week?

I think my car still has a few more questions for you.” Mia offered a flimsy excuse, her eyes smiling.

“Anytime,” Jake nodded.

He watched her taillights disappear around the corner before turning to roll up his shop’s garage door.

He knew tonight had been more than just a family barbecue.

He’d stepped into the circle.

He’d earned the first threads of acceptance.

And more importantly, the line between him and Mia had been quietly drawn tighter.

And his story, now weaving into theirs, had only just begun to gather speed.
