Snap!
The dim electric light flickered violently before going out completely, plunging the room into darkness.
“Why did the power go out all of a sudden?” Jiang Zhuangzhuang puffed out her cheeks, chopsticks still moving without pause as she scooped rice from her bowl.
“Are there any candles at home?” Lu Yancheng’s voice sounded.
Fang Muyu thought for a moment. “Probably not.”
She hadn’t expected the island to have power outages, so she hadn’t prepared candles.
“Is there a flashlight?” Lu Yancheng’s voice came again.
“Yes, on the nightstand in the inner room. I’ll get it for you.”
“No need, you stay seated. I’ll go.”
The sound of rustling clothes could be heard. Lu Yancheng groped his way into the inner room, fumbling around for quite a while before finally finding the flashlight.
Click—the flashlight turned on, a beam of light shining out, finally bringing illumination to the room.
“Our home has no candles or kerosene lamps. What should we do?” Fang Muyu admitted she hadn’t considered things thoroughly enough.
“It’s fine, I have candles.” In the darkness, Lu Yancheng’s face felt a bit flushed. “Where did Wu Weiguo put the things he brought last time?”
“He mentioned putting them in the room.” Fang Muyu was a bit slow on the uptake. “Those things aren’t yours, are they?”
Lu Yancheng didn’t speak, his face growing even hotter.
Fang Muyu followed Lu Yancheng into the room. “The things are under the bed.”
Fang Muyu didn’t know what they were either; she had dragged them under the bed because they were in the way.
Lu Yancheng pulled the things out.
All his belongings had been packed into burlap sacks by Wu Weiguo.
Three sacks.
Which sack had Wu Weiguo put the candles in?
Lu Yancheng himself didn’t know and could only untie them one by one to search.
Lu Yancheng randomly grabbed one sack and began rummaging through it.
These are books, not it.
This is a bedsheet, not it.
These are clothes, also not it.
“You searching alone will take too long. Let me help you.” Fang Muyu crouched down and untied another sack.
The words of refusal on Lu Yancheng’s lips were swallowed before they could escape.
“What is this? A rag? And it has a hole in it.”
Fang Muyu pulled out a piece of tattered cloth and held it up in front of Lu Yancheng.
Lu Yancheng swept the flashlight beam over it, and his face instantly flushed crimson. He hurriedly snatched the tattered cloth from Fang Muyu’s hand.
Fang Muyu looked at Lu Yancheng suspiciously. “Isn’t this just a piece of tattered cloth?”
Lu Yancheng was both embarrassed and angry, unable to utter a single word.
Hadn’t he thrown it away? How did Old Wu pick it back up for him?
Fang Muyu reached into the sack again. This time, it wasn’t tattered cloth but a piece of intact fabric.
She shook out the cloth in her hand and instantly froze in place.
This… this was Lu Yancheng’s underwear!
Oh my!
Fang Muyu quickly flung it away.
As luck would have it, the underwear landed right on Lu Yancheng’s head.
The usually calm and composed Lu Yancheng could no longer care about embarrassment at this moment; he completely lost his composure: “Fang Muyu! Did you do that on purpose?”
“If I said I didn’t, would you believe me?” Fang Muyu blinked her beautiful eyes.
“You—you sit down! I’ll look for it myself!”
Furious, Lu Yancheng grabbed Fang Muyu by the shoulders, led her to the bedside, and forcefully sat her down on the bed. Then he placed the flashlight in her hand.
“You hold the light for me while I search.”
Fang Muyu glanced at the flashlight in her hand, then at Lu Yancheng’s nearly blazing eyes, and nodded.
“Alright then.”
If Lu Yancheng had known that even more awkward situations awaited him later, he would never have let Fang Muyu hold the flashlight for him.
With nothing else to do while holding the flashlight, Fang Muyu began to chatter as she looked around.
“This towel of yours is all pilled and frayed—aren’t you going to replace it?”
“Are these your socks? They’ve got two holes in them. Aren’t you going to mend them or get a new pair?”
“And also…”
In a flash, Lu Yancheng sprang to his feet.
Overwhelmed with shame and frustration, he simply turned around, facing away from Fang Muyu.
This way, he could still have the light while blocking Fang Muyu’s view.
Watching Lu Yancheng turn his back to her, Fang Muyu felt quite pleased.
Indeed, happiness should be built upon the male lead’s suffering.
Serves him right for being blind and falling for someone like Gu Shiyi—a flower in public but rotten tofu dregs in private.
He deserves it!
Wait a minute.
Fang Muyu shook the flashlight in her hand, shifting its beam to the back of Lu Yancheng’s head.
What’s up with his ears? They’re so red.
Could it be that this big ice block is actually flustered and shy?
No way, right?
Fang Muyu felt as if she had discovered a new continent.
So, when this big ice block gets shy, he doesn’t blush in the face—only his ears turn red?!
Fireworks instantly exploded in Fang Muyu’s mind, and the corners of her mouth curled upward uncontrollably.
You dead ice block, she’s got your weakness now, hasn’t she?
Just wait and see how she’ll mercilessly mock him next time.
Lu Yancheng had no idea that the Fang Muyu behind him had already grown devilish horns.
“Could you hold the flashlight steadier? How am I supposed to search like this?”
“You could just turn around.”
Fang Muyu’s words made Lu Yancheng shudder.
“N-no, it’s fine. I can see.”
Fang Muyu rolled her eyes.
This man—his mouth was the hardest part of his entire body.
Suddenly, Fang Muyu seemed to remember something and grew a bit uneasy.
Silence fell over the room, broken only by the rustling sounds of rummaging.
After what felt like an eternity, Lu Yancheng finally found the candle.
Old Wu, really—couldn’t he have waited for him to come back and tidy up his own things?
Not only had he stuffed his belongings in a messy pile, but he’d also hidden the candle at the very bottom, making him search for ages.
“You found it, that’s good.” Fang Muyu stood up, intending to walk over.
Unexpectedly, there were still books on the floor that hadn’t been cleared away.
And so, tripping over the books, Fang Muyu lost her balance and stumbled forward.
“Careful.” Lu Yancheng hurriedly stepped forward and caught Fang Muyu in his arms.
Thud!
The flashlight in Fang Muyu’s hand fell to the floor.
In the dim light, Fang Muyu’s delicate, beautiful face suddenly filled Lu Yancheng’s vision.
Lu Yancheng couldn’t tear his gaze away.
Her flawless features were soft and captivating, her skin so fine it seemed almost ethereal, every contour stirring a faint tremor in his heart.
Lu Yancheng stared blankly, feeling that Fang Muyu at this moment was so beautiful it left him dazed, his breath unconsciously softening.
Especially now, with Fang Muyu lacking her usual domineering air.
Her large, dark, bright eyes were fixed directly on him. He could even see his own reflection in them.
It was as if he, Lu Yancheng, was Fang Muyu’s entire world.
Fang Muyu had to admit—Lu Yancheng truly lived up to being the male lead.
This face was as if carved by a knife, every feature appearing so perfect.
If she hadn’t known the story from the book, she would surely have been tempted by such beauty.
Unfortunately…
Beauty is but a blade hanging overhead.
