The crowd automatically parted to make way.
Lu Yancheng appeared before Fang Muyu.
Seeing Lu Yancheng, Fang Muyu was momentarily stunned.
Why was he here?
Lu Yancheng walked up to Fang Muyu, turning his back to her as he faced the military wives.
“Sisters, I…”
He had intended to say “my wife,” but remembering they had already filed for divorce, he swallowed those words.
“She’s young and straightforward, new to the island and unfamiliar with the rules of the family quarters. If she’s done anything inappropriate, I hope you’ll be understanding.”
Silence fell.
Even Miao Guifen, who had been wailing on the ground, stopped.
Their lips twitched, words stuck in their throats, faces tense as if constipated.
Understanding?
This company commander probably hadn’t seen how fierce and unyielding his wife had been just moments ago. Who could handle her?
Forget about asking the military wives to be understanding—they’d be lucky if she didn’t leave them speechless in the future.
Seeing the military wives’ hesitant expressions, Lu Yancheng sensed something was off.
He turned to look at Fang Muyu.
Fang Muyu pushed him aside—he was blocking her.
“Even if he’s here, don’t think this can be smoothed over. What’s mine, I won’t give up an inch. What’s not mine, I won’t take a bit.”
Confusion flickered in Lu Yancheng’s eyes.
The young soldier who had fetched him only said there was an argument, not how it had unfolded.
Miao Guifen’s face flushed crimson again as she rolled on the ground, throwing a tantrum. “I can’t go on like this! Bullied right at my doorstep—this life is unbearable!”
Fang Muyu spoke calmly, “Don’t worry, I’ll take care of your land for you. Go ahead.”
Miao Guifen choked, her neck stiffening. “Wasn’t I just kindly helping you till the soil and plant vegetables? And you curse me?”
“Did you ask me first?” Fang Muyu’s face paled, then turned ashen as she subtly rubbed her stomach with one hand.
Miao Guifen raised her voice, “I just wanted to surprise you!”
“Surprise?” Fang Muyu laughed in disbelief. “Then let me ask you, whose land did you plant those vegetables on?”
“I… I just saw that plot was empty—”
“Empty, so it’s yours? By that logic, the supply and marketing cooperative’s shelves are empty too. Why don’t you take everything home?”
Someone in the watching crowd couldn’t hold back a snicker.
Miao Guifen, humiliated and furious, raised her voice sharply.
“You haven’t lived here for months—what’s wrong with me planting some vegetables? When the vegetables grow, you’ll have some to eat, and so will I. Isn’t that killing two birds with one stone? Instead of thanking me, you accuse me. I’ll ask the leaders to judge this!”
Fang Muyu was growing impatient. “Fine, let the leaders judge who’s right and who’s wrong.”
Glancing at Lu Yancheng standing stiffly to the side, Fang Muyu felt even more irritated. What kind of awful house had he picked, with such a neighbor attached?
“What are you standing there for? Go invite the leaders to judge this for Sister Miao!”
Lu Yancheng remained silent, his fingertips tightening slightly at his sides, his entire aura instantly darkening.
After listening for so long, if he still didn’t understand the situation, he didn’t deserve to be a company commander.
“Don’t worry, leave this to me. I…”
Whatever Lu Yancheng was about to say, Fang Muyu couldn’t hear it. Her father’s precious daughter was feeling awful.
Ugh—
She leaned against the doorframe, bending over as she retched dryly.
The movement was small, but enough to silence everyone present.
Among the onlooking military wives, several had just arrived on the island yesterday.
“Everyone, let’s say a little less! She’s pregnant and suffering from morning sickness!”
“That’s right, we all live on the same island. We’ll see each other often.”
“She was vomiting badly on the boat yesterday, and she’s still vomiting today. Shouldn’t she see a doctor?”
“Buzz…”
Lu Yancheng’s mind went blank. His whole body seemed to have been paused, motionless, even his breath hitched for a moment.
All the surrounding sounds faded away.
Only those five words remained in his mind:
Pregnant with a child.
Who was pregnant?
Lu Yancheng slowly raised his head and looked at Fang Muyu’s pale face, trying his best to keep his voice steady.
“Is what the sister-in-law said… true?”
Fang Muyu simply looked at him calmly, without saying a word.
Since the other sisters-in-law had already revealed the matter of the child, she didn’t need to find an opportunity anymore.
She was curious about Lu Yancheng’s reaction.
However, looking at his unchanging icy expression, Fang Muyu didn’t expect any breakthrough.
Just as Fang Muyu was lost in her own thoughts, she suddenly found herself lifted into the air.
Lu Yancheng had actually scooped her up in his arms.
Fang Muyu was stunned for a moment. “What are you doing?”
Lu Yancheng didn’t answer, his jaw clenched tight.
The next second, he shot out like a cannonball.
…
Miao Guifen was still sitting on the ground, her mouth agape, her half-formed wail stuck in her throat.
The onlooking military wives collectively fell silent.
Miao Guifen’s delayed wail finally came, “Oh my—this, this is outrageous!”
No one paid her any attention.
…
From the family quarters to the island clinic, there was an uphill path.
Lu Yancheng walked quickly but steadily, his arms holding her tightly as if afraid of jostling Fang Muyu.
Fang Muyu, held firmly in Lu Yancheng’s embrace, could feel the rapid heartbeat in his chest.
“Put me down, I can walk myself.”
Lu Yancheng ignored her.
“I’m fine.”
“Vomiting that badly and you’re fine?”
His voice was muffled, carrying an indescribable mix of urgency and anger.
Fang Muyu couldn’t help but retort, “And whose fault is that?”
Lu Yancheng’s steps faltered for a moment before he walked even faster.
A few seconds later, a low voice, as faint as a mosquito’s hum, sounded above Fang Muyu.
“Mine.”
Good that he knew.
Fang Muyu’s not-so-great mood finally improved a tiny bit.
…
The doctor on duty at the hospital was a female military physician in her forties, surnamed Zhou, who was organizing medical records at her desk.
Bang!
The door was pushed open forcefully.
Doctor Zhou looked up and saw the usually stern-faced Company Commander Lu carrying a beautiful female comrade into the room, his expression as serious as if he were transporting a wounded soldier on the battlefield.
“Doctor Zhou,” Lu Yancheng placed her steadily on the clinic bed, speaking rapidly, “She’s pregnant.”
Doctor Zhou was taken aback.
So she’s pregnant? What’s the big deal?
“She’s vomiting badly.” Lu Yancheng’s brows were furrowed so tightly they could crush a fly. “She vomited yesterday, she vomited today, and she can’t even bring anything up…”
“Company Commander Lu, don’t worry first.” Doctor Zhou interrupted with a smile. “Take your time and explain.”
“I’m not worried.” Lu Yancheng’s fingers unconsciously tightened.
Doctor Zhou glanced at him but didn’t call him out. Instead, she turned to Fang Muyu, who looked somewhat embarrassed on the bed. “When did the vomiting start?”
“When did you start vomiting?” Lu Yancheng followed Doctor Zhou’s gaze and looked at Fang Muyu again.
Fang Muyu met Doctor Zhou’s teasing smile and felt even more embarrassed.
“Shut up, let Doctor Zhou ask.”
“Alright.”
