“What are you spacing out for? Regretting it already?”
Sang Yun’s voice came from the doorway.
Sang Luo turned around and found Sang Yun staring at her with an unfriendly expression.
“What are you doing here?”
“What else would I be doing? I came to watch you pack up your things and leave like a stray dog.”
Sang Yun looked Sang Luo up and down before fixing her gaze on Sang Luo’s delicate, beautiful face. The jealousy in her voice was unmistakable.
That face would soon become just like hers had been in her previous life once they reached Kangba.
Just thinking about it filled her with excitement.
“I think you should worry about yourself instead. Do you really think being sent away for reeducation is some wonderful destination?”
“What do you know?” Sang Yun replied arrogantly. “As long as I endure these few years, I’ll have a life of wealth and luxury afterward. You’ll be the only one suffering. By then, even if you kneel in front of me and beg, don’t expect to get the slightest benefit from me.”
Only after throwing out this long speech did Sang Yun turn around and leave triumphantly.
Remembering her days in the Northwest, Sang Luo’s eyes were filled with mockery.
Once Sang Yun got to the Northwest, she would understand that having a father and younger brothers like those meant that going there was no different from going to hell.
After finishing her packing, darkness had already fallen outside. Sang Chen, Sang Yun, and Sang Qi had all turned off the lights and gone to sleep.
Sang Luo walked into the courtyard and quietly stood beneath the several pear trees in the corner.
Sang Chen’s ancestors had once been from a relatively wealthy family. However, after the political movement targeting landlords, the family had fallen into decline. Still, they had managed to preserve some of the treasures passed down by their ancestors.
Those things had all been hidden beneath these pear trees by the older generations of the Sang family.
In her previous life, it was only after they returned to Rong City that Sang Chen told his younger brothers about the things buried here.
But this time, since she knew about them, she would never leave them behind for those people.
Sang Luo turned around, went to the tool shed, and took a shovel. She spent quite some time digging beneath each pear tree before finally uncovering five ceramic jars.
She put all of them into her space, then filled in the holes she had dug before quietly returning to her room.
Once inside, Sang Luo opened the jars.
Jade bracelets, gold hairpins, pearl necklaces, small gold bars…
Sang Luo stored all of them in her space before leaving the room and heading straight for Sang Chen’s study.
There was a hidden compartment beneath Sang Chen’s desk. It contained money and ration coupons that were urgently needed for everyday life.
Sang Luo did not bother counting them carefully. She took everything without hesitation, then left without leaving so much as a trace behind.
Early the next morning, Sang Luo went to the vocational school to collect her graduation certificate and professional qualification certificate, while Lhazhen went with Sang Chen to get divorced.
However, when Sang Luo arrived at the school, she was told that Teacher Su was at the hospital giving the interns practical training, and the office door was locked.
Sang Luo had no choice but to go to the hospital and wait.
After finishing her work, Teacher Su was surprised to see Sang Luo.
“Didn’t I say your graduation certificate would be mailed to your home? Why did you come here yourself?”
“I’m about to return to Kangba with my mother, so I came to pick it up myself. But the office was locked.”
Teacher Su stopped washing her hands.
“Kangba? That place is nothing like Rong City. You’re first in the entire grade. What a waste it would be to go there. Are you really sure about this?”
“Something happened in my family.” Sang Luo did not elaborate.
Teacher Su knew that Sang Luo came from a good family. After thinking about it, she remembered that things had indeed seemed unsettled recently, so she did not try to persuade her further.
“Here’s the office key. I have another surgery later and can’t go back with you. Go to the office yourself and look for the third shelf of the cabinet against the wall. After you’re finished with the key, just give it to Teacher Wang next door.”
“Thank you for the trouble.”
Sang Luo was about to leave when a little nurse hurried over.
“Dr. Su, a critically injured soldier just arrived. Several of the chief surgeons are all busy in the operating rooms. Do you have time right now?”
“I have a surgery myself in a moment.” Teacher Su looked troubled as well.
Suddenly, she looked at Sang Luo, who was about to leave, and her eyes lit up.
“Student Sang, why don’t you perform this surgery?”
“Me?” Sang Luo had not expected Teacher Su to ask her. She pointed at herself in disbelief.
“Yes!” Teacher Su excitedly grabbed her. “Your professional qualification certificate has already been issued. There won’t be any problem with you going into surgery now. You’re an excellent student, so nothing will go wrong.”
Seeing how much Teacher Su trusted her, Sang Luo stopped hesitating.
“Where’s the patient?”
“Follow me!”
The little nurse excitedly led Sang Luo toward the ward.
“Excuse me, please let us through.”
Pulled along by the nurse, Sang Luo squeezed through the crowd and reached several young soldiers.
The first thing she saw was a man lying unconscious on the hospital bed.
His complexion did not look like that of someone from Rong City. Instead, he looked more like a local from the Tibetan region.
He was nearly 1.9 meters tall, with a straight, powerful build. His facial features were obscured by dried blood, but his high nose bridge and sharply defined jawline were still clearly visible.
Sang Luo crouched down and reached out to lift the man’s clothes, but another soldier from earlier grabbed her wrist tightly.
“What are you doing?”
The little nurse immediately slapped the young soldier’s hand away.
“She’s a doctor at our hospital. She’s here to examine the patient’s injuries.”
The young soldier quickly withdrew his hand and apologized to Sang Luo.
“I’m so sorry! I was too anxious just now. Please, you have to save our regiment commander!”
The other young soldiers also bowed to Sang Luo one after another.
“Doctor, please!”
“I’ll do my best.”
Sang Luo took the medical mask handed to her by the nurse and put it on. Then she took a pair of scissors from the medical kit and carefully cut open the clothing around several bleeding wounds.
“How did he get these injuries?”
“Our regiment commander was protecting me from a bullet. That’s why he was injured so badly.”
Hearing that it was a gunshot wound, Sang Luo put down the scissors and looked at the nurse.
“Is there an operating room available?”
“No.” The nurse looked troubled. “A lot of wounded soldiers have been sent here from the Tibetan region recently. All the chief physicians are busy performing surgeries, so there aren’t any operating rooms left.”
Sang Luo nodded. She took an alcohol swab and gently rubbed it over the bleeding point twice.
“Then leave one person here to hold him down. Everyone else, get out. Disinfect the ward. I’ll remove the bullet here.”
The nurse nodded and immediately followed Sang Luo’s instructions.
Sang Luo put on sterile gloves and picked up the surgical forceps. With swift, precise movements, she reached into the flesh.
A few seconds later, a bullet covered in blood was pulled out.
Blood immediately began gushing from the wound.
Without the slightest hesitation, Sang Luo thrust her fingers directly into the wound.
The moment her fingers forcefully entered the wound, blood sprayed out, splattering across Sang Luo’s clothes.
“What are you doing!” The young soldier screamed in fright at her actions.
Sang Luo paid no attention to him. She simply stuffed gauze little by little into the wound, then pressed down firmly with clean gauze.
“Won’t the wound get infected like this?” The young soldier was extremely worried.
“Only someone who stays alive has to worry about infection.”
Only after Sang Luo saw that the bleeding had stopped did she continue treating the next bullet wound.
Dündup seemed to have been jolted awake by the pain. He slowly opened his eyes.
In a daze, he looked at the woman who was treating him.
Half of her face was hidden behind a mask, revealing only her smooth, full forehead and bright, jet-black eyes. Her entire figure seemed to glow with dazzling radiance, like a snow lotus blooming on a cliff.
Dündup felt as though the still waters of his heart suddenly rippled with faint waves.
Before losing consciousness again, only one thought remained in his mind.
What beautiful eyes.
