Mark gasped.
The remote almost fell from his hand, thanks to his quick reflexes.
His heart thumped hard against his chest as he pressed the button, and the feed continued.
Members of the Evercrest family gradually walked out of the mansion to welcome the newly married bride.
Every smile looked warm and their greeting sounded polite and happy.
But Mark knew better than anyone that beneath those smiling faces lay countless hidden schemes.
He exhaled and glanced at Damian.
It was said his boss was both blind and crippled, but only he knew Damian wasn’t limited by his condition.
To be more precise, his intuition had only become frighteningly accurate.
Many times Mark had watched Damian predict people’s intentions long before they acted.
It was enough to send chills down anyone’s spine.
“Mark, do you still want me to remind you?” he asked calmly.
Mark shook his head and exhaled.
“I am sorry, but I can’t reach that conclusion at the moment.
I will have to look into it.” A cold smile formed on Damian’s lips.
“There’s no need to bother over such trivial matters.” Mark paused slightly.
He was no longer comprehending.
“What…” he began.
But Damian’s cold voice cut through the study.
“If she is a substitute, there must be flaws.
Wait for her to reveal them.” He slowly turned his attention toward the large screen for a brief second.
His eyes narrowed slightly behind his glasses, and his fist clenched the armrest.
“Mark,” his calm voice rippled across the study, slow, low, and deliberate.
“I have to meet my wife and welcome her…don’t you think so?” Mark unconsciously looked back toward the surveillance monitor.
Sylvia stood quietly beside Valen while the old man enthusiastically introduced one family member after another.
A smile was plastered on her face as she listened, but with years of experience working under Damian, Mark was certain it took all her strength to maintain it.
And now his boss wanted to meet her.
Mark suddenly felt sorry for her.
“Mark, why are you hesitating?” “I am sorry,” he said as he stepped forward, took the handles of the wheelchair, and pushed Damian toward the living room.
It had been more than six months since Damian was discharged from the hospital and returned to the Evercrest family mansion.
Several stairways had been renovated to make movement easier for him.
Because he couldn’t move around by himself, his grandfather had opted to hire a caregiver who would help him with his mobility.
Who would have thought Damian would insist on having his assistant take over the task?
Worried about his welfare, the old man had accepted his whim and let Mark stay.
From the living room, Valen’s voice filtered through the hallway.
“Now that you are married to my grandson…always remember you are now a member of my Evercrest family…” “A member of the Evercrest family?
Is she worthy?” A cold, emotionless voice rippled through the hallway and into the sitting room.
Sylvia froze.
Her smile vanished from her face, a chill travelled down her spine, and her fingers tightened hard around her dress.
Several heads in the sitting room turned toward the direction of the voice as Sylvia slowly lifted her head toward the entrance.
Sure enough, it was the infamous devil, Damian Evercrest, wheeled out of the hallway by his assistant.
Sylvia drew in a deep, steady breath while letting her eyes trail over him.
He was clad in a high-end custom black suit and white shirt that hugged his body.
His shoulders were broad, and his taut muscles were perfectly outlined through the fabric.
His face was perfectly sculpted, with a sharp oval shape and a flawless jawline that seemed carved by an artist’s hand.
His thin lips were curled into a cold, arrogant smirk, while a pair of black shades concealed his eyes completely, revealing nothing of the emotions hidden beneath them.
Only his thick brows remained visible, adding to the intimidating aura that surrounded him.
A soft brown blanket was spread across his knees.
Even his black shoes were so polished that they glistened under the light.
His fingers, firmly crossed together, showcased distinct knuckles and slender hands.
His presence sent a wave of coldness across the lively living room, and his arrogance was clearly magnified despite being a man trapped in a wheelchair with no sight.
Sylvia swallowed hard as she continued to study him.
She had to admit that, despite his disability, the man before her possessed an overwhelming presence that demanded attention the moment he appeared.
He truly was a proud son of heaven.
“Damian,” Valen snapped.
“You are being rude.” Damian’s brow flickered slightly with surprise before his lips parted.
“Rude?” He smirked.
“Grandpa…has the Evercrest family fallen so low that you brought the Quinn family’s daughter in with such high-profile fanfare?” Valen shook with anger.
“Damian, watch your tongue!” “Otherwise?
I must say…you can keep her to yourself.
Besides…” Laughter instantly erupted throughout the living room.
Some covered their mouths politely, while others made no effort to hide the ridicule in their eyes.
The sound echoed through the spacious hall like countless sharp needles piercing Sylvia’s heart.
She lowered her gaze for a fleeting moment, wishing the polished marble floor beneath her feet would split apart and swallow her whole.
It was already embarrassing enough to complete the marriage process all by herself before such a large number of guests, and now she had been dragged back only to be reminded she was unworthy.
And by whom?
A blind man in a wheelchair?
The humiliation burned through every vein in Sylvia’s body.
Her fingers slowly loosened their grip on her wedding gown as the trembling in her hands gradually disappeared.
Fear was still there, buried deep inside her heart, but anger was beginning to overwhelm it.
One calm, deliberate step followed another as she walked toward Damian.
Every footstep echoed across the silent living room, causing everyone present to unconsciously hold their breath unsure of what she was going to do next and of Damian’s possible reaction.
Damian remained perfectly still.
Although darkness had stolen his sight, he could clearly sense someone approaching him.
The faint rustle of her wedding gown against the marble floor, the measured rhythm of her footsteps, and even her slightly uneven breathing told him she had stopped directly before him.
One of his fingers twitched almost imperceptibly before returning to its composed position.
Sylvia stopped less than a metre away from him and looked directly at the man whose arrogance seemed capable of crushing everyone around him.
Taking a slow, steady breath, she lifted her chin and met him without the slightest intention of retreating.
“Damian Evercrest,” she called, her voice clear and cold enough to silence the entire living room.
“Tell me…
what exactly is so wrong about being the Quinn family’s daughter?”
