Elira remained standing near the closed door for a few seconds longer than necessary, as if the act of bringing him into the private room had used up most of her prepared courage.

Ray noticed this and did not fill the silence immediately.

He walked further in, glanced once at the turned-down bed, then turned back to face her with the same easy posture he had carried in the sitting room.Full novel: FREE USE In A Reverse World — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

"You can still change your mind," he said. "I will leave, the escorts will take me back, and no one at the Black Orchid will ask questions. This only works if you actually want the result."

Elira’s fingers tightened around each other.

"I want the result."

"Then stop standing there like you are about to be judged." Ray nodded toward the small settee near the window. "Sit and we can start with talking."

She hesitated, then crossed the room and sat with her spine too straight. Ray took the opposite end of the settee, close enough for conversation but not close enough to crowd her.

The afternoon light coming through the curtains was soft and muted, leaving the room in a comfortable half-shadow.

"Tell me what you have already tried with him," he said.

Elira looked down at her hands.

"I have tried being available. Staying in the room when he is home. Wearing things he once said he liked. I have initiated a few times. He... responds when I do, but it feels like he is completing a task. Afterward he thanks me, as if I performed a service, and then returns to his study."

"And when you initiate, how do you do it?"

She gave a short, embarrassed breath.

"I ask. Or I touch his arm and wait to see if he continues."

Ray let out a quiet, unimpressed sound.

"That is why it fails. You are approaching him like a petitioner. He already holds the higher position in the marriage. Every time you ask permission with your voice or your body, you confirm that the interest has to come from him first. Men like your husband do not start chasing what already looks uncertain."

Elira’s brow furrowed.

"So I am supposed to pretend I do not care?"

"No. You are supposed to act as if his attention is already yours and you are simply deciding how to use it." Ray shifted slightly, resting one arm along the back of the settee. "There is a difference between demanding and assuming. Demanding makes people resist. Assuming makes them follow."

She was quiet for a moment, turning the words over.

"Show me what that looks like."

Ray studied her for a second, then gave a small nod.

"Stand up."

Elira stood up slowly at the same time with him and he stepped closer, he was not touching yet, but was near enough that she had to tilt her head slightly to keep his gaze.

"Right now you are waiting," he said. "Your shoulders are tight. Your hands are restless and your eyes keep checking my reaction. That is the version of you that gets polite duty and a thank-you afterward."

He reached out and lightly tapped the side of her arm with two fingers.

"Drop your shoulders. Stop checking my face for approval. Look at me as if you already know I am going to respond."

Elira tried and as expected her first attempt was stiff, seeing this Ray shook his head once.

"Again. You are still asking."

She exhaled, forced her posture to settle, and looked up at him with more deliberate steadiness. It was not perfect, but it was better.

"Closer," Ray said.

She stepped in and the space between them shrank to almost nothing. He could catch the faint scent of whatever light perfume she wore.

"Now touch me the way you would touch him if you were done waiting for permission."

Elira’s hand lifted, hovered, then settled against his chest. The contact still felt like she was trying too hard to be careful.

Ray covered her hand with his own and pressed it more firmly against him.

"You see the difference? You were barely committing to the touch. If you do that to a man who is already half-checked out, he has no reason to check back in."

He released her hand but did not step away.

"Try again. This time do not touch me like you are afraid I will move."

Elira’s second attempt was stronger. Her palm settled flat against his chest, fingers spreading slightly, and she kept her eyes on his instead of dropping them.

Pleased with the outcome Ray gave a short sound of approval.

"Better. Now use your voice. Say something that does not sound like a request."

She swallowed.

"I want you to stay in the room with me tonight."

"Still a request," Ray said. "You are hoping he agrees. Try it as a statement of what is going to happen."

Elira’s cheeks had gone warm, but she did not look away.

"You are going to stay with me tonight."

"Closer. Try to be less polite."

A beat of silence passed. Then, quieter but clearer:

"You are not leaving this room until I am finished with you."

Ray’s mouth curved slightly.

"There it is."

Elira let out a short, self-conscious breath that was almost a laugh. Her hand was still on his chest. She seemed to notice it again at the same time he did, but she did not pull away.

"This feels unnatural," she admitted.

"It feels unnatural because you have been trained to be the accommodating one," Ray said. "Unlearning that takes repetition. We are going to repeat it until your body stops defaulting to careful."

He stepped back half a pace, giving her a little space again.

"Next part. I am going to put my hands on you. You are going to react the way you want him to react when you touch him, like you expected it."

Elira’s breathing had changed, it was shallower than before, but she nodded.

Ray reached out and set his hands on her waist firmly. He felt the small jolt go through her, the instinctive tension, and waited.

"You flinched."

"I know."

"Do it again. I am going to touch you the same way. This time do not flinch."

He removed his hands, then placed them back on her waist with the same confidence. Elira held still with her shoulders remaining down, and after a second she even leaned a fraction into the contact.

"Good," Ray said. "Again."

They repeated the simple motion several times—his hands finding her waist, her body learning not to treat the contact as a surprise. Each repetition took a little more of the stiffness out of her.

By the fourth time her breathing had settled into something steadier, and the look in her eyes had shifted from nervous endurance to focused attention.

Ray let his hands remain where they were.

"You are starting to understand the posture," he said. "Now we add intent. When you touch him, or when he touches you, you need to decide what you want the next moment to be and move toward it."

Elira’s voice came out quieter than before.

"And if he does not follow?"

"Then you do not collapse back into asking," Ray answered. "You hold the line. Men like your husband often test whether the certainty is real. If you drop it at the first hesitation, he learns he can return to being distant without consequence."

She absorbed that in silence withher hands resting lightly against his forearms now, the earlier awkwardness slowly being replaced by something more deliberate.

Ray watched the change settle into her expression and gave a small nod.

"We will go further in a moment. First I want you to practice initiating one more time. Touch me, speak to me, and move us toward the bed without asking if it is allowed. Treat it as already decided."

Elira held his gaze, the nerves were still present, but they were no longer the strongest thing in her face.

She stepped in, set both hands on his chest, and pushed him backward with steady pressure until the backs of his legs met the edge of the bed.

"You are going to sit," she said, the words clearer this time. "And I am going to show you what I have learned so far."

Ray’s mouth tilted in a faint, approving smile.

"Then show me."
