The sun had just risen on the Blackpool training base as William Gill arrived, his heart pounding with nerves and excitement. Only two days remained before his trial. William knew he had an important task ahead of him. He had to make his father proud and prove to Thomas Tuchel that he was worthy to sign for the club. William was quick to change as he looked around the Blackpool training base one last time before his big day. He had to make the best of these forty-eight hours to bridge the gap between him and the other players. William was, indeed, the odd one out. It was not easy for the young boy to be the youngest. Nevertheless, as William walked into the common room to wish everyone a good day, all the players welcomed him as one of theirs.
A beautiful aroma of deep-heat rub mixed with the sound of the bags dropping as William walked into the locker room. William emptied the content of his duffle bag on the bench as he looked at the training gear before him. William pulled on the training shorts that had been set aside for him. He put on the training top over his head and admired the fit. It gave him that professional look that all footballers longed for. William reached for the brand new boots that his father had painstakingly bought for him. He stopped almost immediately and withdrew his hand. He did not want to ruin the "warrior's equipment" on his first day; he would save them for the trial day. William put on the training boots offered to him and felt the immense satisfaction of belonging that he had never felt on his local pitch.
William stepped out onto the emerald grass of the main pitch and took a deep breath. He looked around until his eyes met a familiar pair of eyes that stood out in the middle of the pitch. The Blackpool coach, Lincoln, was of average height but had a magnetic personality. His long, flowing black hair was tied in a ponytail as he wore a dark training top with the Blackpool crest proudly displayed on his chest. Lincoln wore a silver whistle around his neck as he faced the young footballers. The coach had a relaxed nature as he greeted William with a smile on his face. Lincoln was a composed and confident person, which was visible as he faced the young footballers.
"All of you, listen up!" Lincoln bellowed as his voice reverberated in the whole pitch. All the young players turned to face him as he placed a hand on William's shoulder and pushed him forward. "William is here for his trial, so I want all of you to be nice to him and make him feel at home. Welcome him to our family at Blackpool," said the coach. Coach Lincoln informed the rest of the squad that William was expected to play as a central midfielder. The rest of the boys nodded and gave William a few pats on his back. "I want all of you to make this little guy feel like a part of the family," said Lincoln. William's heart raced as the captain rallied his fellow players as the captain shook their hands one after the other. William vowed that he would show his appreciation for their gesture by being a good and hardworking "little boy."
The team had a few warm-up exercises and sprints to prepare them for the day's training. William's legs burned as he dashed along with the older and more experience footballers. However, to William's astonishment, he found that he could keep up with the older boys quite comfortably. William was enjoying the feeling of his heart thudding in his chest and the wonderful sensation of his boots sliding on the grass. The team had a 'rondo' exercise after the warm-up and sprints.
William was a picture of power and control as he passed the ball under his armpit to his team-mates. He was dancing with the ball, which made everyone love his game. His feet kept moving as he sent the ball back to his team-mates using the inside and outside of his boots, making it impossible for the defenders to steal it. William had the majority of his passes in his group, and he was calm and collected. Not even the rapid charges by the defenders could shake him out of position. His first touch was always perfect, enabling him to create his next move. Coach Lincoln was watching the young boy play with great interest as his assistant, Anderson, stood beside him. "Did you see the new boy, Anderson?" Lincoln muttered to his assistant as he watched William do his thing on the pitch. Anderson replied as he gave Lincoln a strange look. "Not even in the last ten years have I seen such a complete midfielder."
To test William and see if he could handle the pressures and challenges of a competitive game, Coach Lincoln decided to have a 5-a-side game in a confined space on the main pitch. William was playing with the team's captain, a quick and strong winger called Fernandes. William could sense the game's ebb and flow almost immediately. He had a fantastic eye for open men, which the other defenders did not have. He soon began laying accurate passes for his team-mates.
William received the ball at the center of the park as one of the opposing defenders came flying towards him. William made a feint to his left, and the defender dived past him. However, William's quick flick of the ball with the outside of his right boot made the defender commit a foul. William saw Fernandes waiting for him at the other end of the park and delivered a stunning through ball to him. Fernandes laid the ball in the back of the net, scoring a magnificent goal. The captain gave William a huge hug and picked him up off the ground in celebration. The rest of the team was also stunned by the tremendous display by the new boy as he entertained them with this tremendous show. William had managed to charm his way into the team.
As the game soon came to an end, the players gradually walked back towards the sideline to cool down and re-hydrate, but Coach Lincoln requested William to remain there. Lincoln approached William, his long, flowing black hair tied in a ponytail. William looked up at the coach and was surprised to see the look on his face. It was Lincoln who spoke first. "Where have you been, William? I have been searching for you!" Lincoln chuckled as he took a deep sigh. "You look good, mate. I am sure you are more than ready for your trial, but I have to admit; I believe you will pass with flying colours". William was thrilled to hear the comforting words from the coach and was filled with strength as the seconds ticked away. William said his goodbyes to the coach and walked into the locker room to change. The locker room was filled with the sound of chatting young players and the splashing of the shower as they discussed what had happened on the pitch. They celebrated William and told him they prayed he passed the upcoming trial as they looked forward to playing football with him. William sat on the edge of his cot, taking off his sweaty training shirt, thinking about how far he had come since he first set foot on the pitch and also the kind words from the coach and his team-mates. William looked at his duffle bag, knowing the "warrior's boots" were inside waiting for him on the big day. He could not help feeling proud and accomplished as he looked at his bag. He knew his big day was approaching, and he was preparing himself for it. He had already impressed the coach and the assistant coach and had earned the respect of his team-mates. However, his journey to football greatness was just beginning, and he had several milestones to achieve before he could be considered one of the best. Although William had defeated many odds, he had to face his biggest war yet: the Club Board.
