CHAPTER 9: A NEW FACE IN THE CAMP

GEM TALENT

The silence was not an empty one, instead, it was a hushed anticipation that sent shivers down William Gill's spine as he was stood in the middle of the living room. His father Mr. Gill's eyes seem to sparkle with something that made William's heart pound in his chest. "Let's get to packing then, son," said Mr. Gill almost lovingly as the two men walked off towards William's small bedroom, where the young footballer would begin to stuff his old t-shirts and training shorts in to a duffle bag.

As William folded and bended the worn fabric that spoke volumes about the long hours he spent on the training ground raining and blistering hot sun, he and his father were both lost in separate thoughts. It was not until the bag began to swell with the old clothes that Mr. Gill paused to kneel on the floor and pull out a rectangular parcel wrapped in brown paper. Mr. Gill sat on the edge of William's bed and gestured for the young man to sit beside him as he shook slightly. "I know things have not been easy and I know I cannot give you the world," whispered his father as he pushed out the mystery package. "A warrior needs the best equipment to wage and win his battles, and I wanted you to have these before you left for the Blackpool base." William's hands trembled as he pulled the rough paper from the parcel to reveal a pair of brand new football boots!

The football boots were beautiful! They had a streamlined yet powerful look to them, and the metal studs sparkled under the dim bulb of William's bedroom. The boots' leather was supple and released that wonderful 'new shoe' fragrance synonymous with the sport. William gazed lovingly at the boots as his mouth fell open in sheer delight. He was well aware of the extra shifts his father had taken at the factory to afford him these boots. William's eyes glistened with unfulfilled joy as his father's gesture sunk in deep down inside him. A moment later, the young man found himself wiping his tears, which had escaped down his cheeks, with his hands. It all dawned on him real quick that despite the meager income his father earned from the factory, he somehow managed to set aside some pocket money to buy him these expensive football boots. William's heart skipped a beat as he launched himself off the bed and into his father's arms, almost trying to fuse their bodies together. William sobbed quietly as he buried his nose in his father's shoulder, whispering 'thanks' over and again. Mr. Gill was also overcome with emotions as he patted his son's back with his calloused hands. "Never give up, son," said Mr. Gill as he gave William a tight bear hug before pulling back to look into his eyes with an ironclad look of love and determination burning in his own. "Your dreams are no longer a dream but a reality, and you must chase it until you conquer it. Before Mr. Gill exited the bedroom for the night, he slid his hand into his pocket and retrieved a slim phone from it. He handed it to William and explained that he wanted him to be able to update him on his life at any time of the day or night. William's heart swelled with so much gratitude and pleasure almost bursting as he promised his father that he would never disappoint him, no matter the circumstances. The morning of William's departure broke with a clear and brilliant sun, which signified the beginning of something spectacular for the young footballer. Outside the house, Mr. Anthony stood by a black vehicle checking his watch. William burst out the front door, his new bag over his shoulder and new boots tucked inside securely. William gave his father one final energetic wave before climbing into the car. His fingers tingled with electricity as he settled into the leather seats. The ride to the Blackpool base took an hour, but William enjoyed every bit of it.

The young man spent the whole time pressed against the window watching the scenery outside change from the busy streets to the open fields. William's heart swelled with joy, and he watched the beautiful blue lakes sparkle as the sun shone over them. He also loved seeing the lush greenery that passed by in a blur. Soon enough, the car began to slow down and pulled up into a long driveway. William was taken aback by the sheer beauty of the Blackpool base. It was not as grandiose as the Chelsea academy that he had seen on the paper, but the place was absolutely breathtaking. It seems the outside of the facility spoke volumes about the quality of the football club. The building's exterior was made up of classic red bricks and had a beautiful green pitch, which complemented the rest of the surrounding environment almost to perfection. William stepped out of the car and was instantly greeted by a completely new aroma. It was as if he were in the next league! He walked alongside Mr. Anthony to the front doors where he laid his eyes on a group of impressive and tall men. It was no surprise to him that they were former Blackpool footballers and legends who had come to assist in training the new players to the elite club. These men were warriors who had bled and broken in the battlefields of the professional game.

William's eyes locked on to theirs as he felt a wave of pressure come over him. It was almost as if he had faced an army and not a couple of tall men. He shook that feeling off and replaced it with an ironclad look of determination, which sent his new coaches smiling. He looked to the distance and saw the stadium and wondered what it would be like to score a goal that would echo in the annals of football history. He wanted to make this place famous for a different reason: his fame. William looked at the jerseys in the shop windows and had an image of himself in one of those beautiful kits. The next thing he knew, William was already inside the building marveling at the numerous trophies and awards that had been won by the club. He envisioned his name engraved on the winning plaques as he walked the length of the corridor that led to the dressing rooms. All William felt was determination as the young man inhaled sharply. He knew the battle had only just begun as the young man walked towards the dressing rooms to meet his new team.

Mr. Anthony and William strolled into the locker rooms, and the latter was greeted by the sight of several young men who were also getting ready for the day. William stood his ground confidently as he faced the competitive stares of the men. William took a deep breath as he surveyed the room full of training kits before heading into the dressing room to prepare for the first day of his new life. The young footballer knew his journey had only just begun. The new talent would make history and become a known entity among football lovers across the globe.
