The huge iron gates of the elite training academy groaned and moaned as William Gill stepped through them, the sound almost as if they were echoing his inner turmoil and change. His muscles throbbed with a dull pain, having pushed himself to the limit, but he felt lighter than ever before, as if the clouds of self-doubt had finally lifted from his shoulders. As he walked towards the bus stop, he passed by countless city streets, observing the people and how they shifted their weight as they walked. He finally entered a bus and sat beside the window
The bus ride was a long one, and William was unfazed by the bumpy road as his mind wandered off, replaying every successful pass and touch he had pulled off during practice. He watched the scenery change as the bus drove further and further away from the towering skyscrapers of the rich and famous to the weather-beaten buildings of his own neighborhood.
As he stepped off the bus, he started his slow trek to his house, a small and run-down place at the end of a street. The paint was peeling, and the porch sagged to the left, but it wasn't ugly in the least because the house was spotless. The windows were polished to perfection, sparkling like diamonds, and there wasn't a single weed in the front yard; the Gill family took great pride in their small home.
As William pushed the front door open, the familiar and somewhat nostalgic smell of lemon polish greeted him, announcing his father's return from work. Mr. Gill, a man whose hands were permanently rough and sore from years of scrubbing the floors and counters of tall office buildings, sat at the kitchen table, a tired but well-groomed smile plastered on his face as his son entered the room. Mr. Gill knew how his son had struggled for the past few months, being constantly picked on by his peers due to his lack of strength. It had pained him to see his William try to stand tall and keep his head up when the other children would shove their shoulders against his, knocking him off-balance. He watched helplessly as his son walked away from the football field he had once dreamed of joining with his whole heart and soul.
"You look happy today, William," his father said as he poured himself a glass of cold water. William sat down and sipped the water, letting the cool liquid slide down his parched throat before launching into the events of the day. "Dad, I realized today that I don't need to be the strongest player out there to be good, so I decided to change my mindset, and everything seemed to fall into place," William replied, his eyes sparkling with a newfound vigor as he continued his explanation. "It was as if my vision had sharpened to the point where I could predict their every move," he added, his voice tinged with excitement. "I felt as if I controlled the ball rather than the other way around!"
William stood in the middle of the kitchen and demonstrated the movements he had practiced, his motions swift and purposeful. "I lack the upper body strength to push people away, so I focused on using my vision to get past them," he said as he executed a quick spin, the movement reminiscent of a street fighter's acrobatic maneuver. William reenacted his movements and demonstrated the passes he had perfected. His father's eyes were wide as he took in his son's movements, realizing that his William was no longer the gangly and clumsy boy he used to be.
"The coach was thrilled, Dad, he couldn't believe his eyes seeing the improvement you put in!" William exclaimed, smiling broadly.
He related the events of the day, telling his father how he had focused on his ball control and sharpened his vision, allowing him to outmaneuver the bigger and stronger players effortlessly. Mr. Gill's heart swelled with pride as he listened to his son, who had continued to strive for improvement despite his struggles.
"Your mind is the most potent weapon, William, and as long as you keep your visions clear, I don't think there is anything you can't achieve," his father said, laying a hand on his son's shoulder.
The two talked long into the evening about the power of change and how everything was possible if one had the vision and determination to see it through, and for the first time in a long while, the old house almost seemed like a palace.
Meanwhile, in the private office of Thomas Tuchel, the atmosphere was tense as Coach Robert, entered the room. The soft murmur of computers punctuated the quiet as Thomas Tuchel studied the intricate formations pinned on the wall. Robert stood before the desk, his throat clearing as he fought the uneasiness caused by the fact that Coach Tuchel had earned his reputation by only recruiting the best.
"Sir, I have been observing the players at the training base, and I believe there is something special about them that you should see for yourself," Robert said, his voice steady as he spoke. Thomas Tuchel didn't look up from the documents on his desk as he listened to Robert. He was a world-renowned manager, and he knew the competition for the best talent was cutthroat. Robert spoke of the raw and unpolished talent at the training base, explaining that he felt the time was right for Thomas to see it for himself.
"I'm looking for players who have the ability to think on their feet and have a natural aptitude for the game, Robert," Thomas replied, his voice calm but firm. Robert nodded, fully aware that the manager meant the players needed to have a certain level of intuitive understanding of the game. He knew Thomas wanted someone with the ability to think strategically rather than simply following instructions blindly.
"They have progressed to the point where I believe the head coach should witness it for himself," Robert said, watching Thomas's face closely.
"If you come to the base, you will see One or Two players whose talents seem to be limitless," Robert said, his eyes sparkling with excitement. He described the raw talent he saw in the young players, comparing it to a diamond that needed some polishing from the right hands. Tuchel sat back in his leather chair, tapping his fingers against his chin as he mulled over Robert's words. He had always been wary of sudden displays of talent, but he knew Robert would not have asked for his presence at the training base if he wasn't convinced there was something special about these players.
Finally, Thomas stood and adjusted the fabric of his suit. "Very well, Robert; I will come to the training base on the second day to see these players and discover the raw talent you think is worth pursuing," Thomas replied, his tone unusually serious. He warned Robert that he was looking for more than just flashes of brilliance and reminded him that he wanted players who could use their minds as much as their bodies. Robert gave a relieved sigh as he realized the visit to the training base had finally come to fruition. He thanked the manager and left the office, already imagining how he would prepare the young players for their upcoming match.
As night settled in, William Gill lay in bed in his small room, staring blankly at the ceiling. He listened to the muffled sounds of the city outside the clean windowpane. He felt comforted by his father's words and the realization that he could change things for the better. He was confident that the next day would test his skills, but he didn't feel as intimidated as he used to be.
The dream of becoming a legend is coming to reality and he can feel it so strong.
