Noises from the street echoing louder. It was a perfect morning.
The first light of the morning sun streamed into William Gill's room, but he did not groan or roll over. He was already up and alert, his body feeling energetic and prepared to embrace the day with a new vigor. He was filled with determination to perform every task to the best of his ability and, as such, he began a series of stretching and warm-up exercises to loosen his muscles.
The memory of yesterday's triumph was fresh in his mind, and he knew that to reach the levels of a Zinedine Zidane, he would have to be twice as determined not to waste every opportunity that come his way. He marched around his room with a renewed sense of purpose, arranging his gear and schoolbooks.
After eating his breakfast, William reached the school gates with a heart full of joy. The school was his special haven as his father had managed to secure him a place there due to his athletic abilities. The place had special programs for gifted athletes that dispatched them back to classes early so that they could report back to the training grounds in good time.
William was not the best in his class, but he was very intelligent. However, his wandering thoughts were frequently stolen away by thoughts of the beautiful game, Still, the good grades were usually enough for his father's satisfaction.
As the bell finally signaled the beginning of his early release, William felt his heart swell with joy. He quickly gathered his belongings and prepared to depart as if the competition for the fastest packer had begun. Instead of waiting for a ride or for the school bus to arrive, William decided to jog to the training ground so as to test his stamina. He jogged happily alongside the streets with a beaming face as his mind drifted to yesterday's praise from coach Robert, and also encouragement from his father. The jog was relatively short, and he arrived at the training grounds with a thumping heart and a body all warmed up.
As he touched the turf, the warm-up session commenced with a vengeance, revealing just how hungry he was to prove his talents to his coach. His passes were accurate, and each strike sent the ball whizzing to his teammates' feet with a precision that was astonishing. His ball control had also improved by leaps and bounds, the ball seemingly attached to his feet and responding to his every command with magnetic accuracy. He had acquired a new level of "technique", a term used to describe a player's ability to combine "finesse", which is the skill with which the ball is manipulated, and "tenacity", which is the power and persistence with which a player performs on the pitch.
However, it was the amazing displays of chemistry,or teamwork, that captivated coach Robert's attention. William and Stone, the team's star striker, seemed to be in absolute harmony as they exchanged passes effortlessly. Every time William received the ball, it was as if he knew precisely where his teammate was positioned, and as a result, he delivered a pass to him with machine precision. Stone was always a step ahead of the game, for he was a bulky yet powerful player who had mastered the art of scoring with his size and strength. William loved playing with him, for he made every assist seem simple, and he enjoyed giving "service" to the big man. While these two young men engaged in their spectacular performance, coach Robert stood on the sidelines with a beaming face. He was delighted by what he was seeing, for he knew Thomas Tuchel was watching from the stands, hidden expertly among the onlookers.
At the front rows of the stands, Thomas Tuchel was enthralled by what he was witnessing. He loved how William did not rely on his natural athleticism to dominate the game. Instead, he used his "vision", a term used to describe a player's ability to think through the game and determine where teammates and the ball are in space. Tuchel was delighted by the "visionary" talent that William had begun to display on the pitch. Each time William executed a clever move or maneuver, the famous coach's face would light up with glee because he had seen enough to know that this "prodigy" was a genius, a term used to describe a naturally gifted individual.
He turned to coach Robert and said, "I will talk to the board of directors and offer him a professional contract as soon as possible." Robert was overwhelmed with joy at these words, for he felt that his efforts in helping The U-18 players reach his full potential had not gone in vain., and he also believed that if he can handle them very well, they all will player in higher level.
Meanwhile, as coach Robert and Thomas Tuchel met in the private office to discuss William's recruitment, the young man was busy practicing various shooting techniques on the training ground. The memories of the day were replaying in his mind like a film as he performed each movement. William felt elated at how well he had played and decided to continue practicing until his movements became precise and consistent. He wanted to continue because he had more to prove, and he was not yet ready to go home. He began by performing "headers", a technique used to score and pass the ball by hitting it with his head. He would "uppercut", or raise his head and strike the ball with power, sending it to the far corners of the goal. He would also practice his "footwork", or foot movements, by setting up "cones", or markers, and weaving in and out of them at breakneck speeds.
Thomas Tuchel was busy looking out the window when he saw William continue his practice on his own. He was delighted by the young man's "intrinsic motivation", a quality that described an individual's natural desire to do something without being forced to do it. He was convinced that his decision to recruit William was the best he had ever made, for he had witnessed proof that the young man had extraordinary natural abilities. In fact, it was the final confirmation that William was a rare talent that merited special attention.
As the day drew to a close and the sun began to set, its golden rays shone beautifully on the training ground. William finally stopped practicing and stood in the middle of the field, catching his breath. He gazed into the empty stadium with a "contentment", a feeling of joy and satisfaction, that few could understand. He knew deep down that his life would never be the same again, as everything he had done had led him to this moment. He was glad he had been able to live up to his own expectations, and he was confident the opportunity that awaited him would help him fulfill his dreams soon enough. He walked back to the locker room with a heavy but happy heart as the "foundation", or basis, for his future career had been laid.
Meanwhile, preparations for his professional contract were being made in the offices above as the board of directors began to deliberate on the remarkable young man who had captured the hearts of so many. The path to the top had just begun for William, but with the help of coach Robert and the guidance of a legendary manager, he knew he would achieve greatness some day. He had transformed his weakness, into abundance, and as he left the training ground that day, the stars seemed to twinkle especially bright for him.
The young man had done all that was necessary, and with his heart full of determination, the world of soccer would soon bow to William Gill.
