Edmund had caught an entire person.

More importantly, Cho intended to try out for Ravenclaw this year.

Since they were in different years and shared no classes, joining the team would give them far more time together.

“I would be very interested, Professor.

But is it allowed?

I was told first-years cannot join the House teams.” “Leave that to me, Mr.

Gaunt.” Flitwick hopped down from his chair and crossed to a large chest beside the window.

He unlocked it, leaned inside, and emerged with a long parcel.

“Professor, what is this?” “A Nimbus 2000.

It is their newest model.” Flitwick offered him the parcel.

“A former student of mine works as a designer for the Nimbus Racing Broom Company and sent it to me.

I had considered giving it to Mr.

Davies, but I believe you are the better choice.” Edmund accepted the broom with both hands.

McGonagall had purchased Harry’s Nimbus herself; Flitwick merely had to open a chest and produce one from a former student’s gift.

Ravenclaw had fewer old pure-blood families than Slytherin, but its graduates occupied important technical and academic positions throughout magical Britain.

Their collective influence was easy to underestimate.

“Thank you, Professor.

I’ll take good care of it.

When should I report to the team?” “Next Wednesday.

Ravenclaw is holding tryouts, and Mr.

Davies will decide which position suits you.” Edmund left the office carrying the Nimbus.

The common room descended on him again when he returned, though a few brief answers were enough to satisfy most of the students.

Cho approached after the crowd dispersed and pointed at the parcel.

“What is that?” “A Nimbus 2000.” Her eyes widened.

“Professor Flitwick gave it to you?” “He wants me to join the Quidditch team.

We haven’t settled on a position yet.” “But first-years aren’t allowed on House teams.” “McGonagall took Harry to her office after the lesson.

I suspect Gryffindor is making the same exception.” Edmund rested the parcel against a chair.

“Flitwick said tryouts are next Wednesday.

Are you going?” “Of course.

I’m going to be Ravenclaw’s Seeker.” The certainty in Cho’s voice made him smile.

“Our morning classes are over.

Why don’t we find somewhere quiet and test the Nimbus?” “You would let me fly it?” “It’s a broom, Cho, not a crown jewel.” He took her hand.

They ate lunch, then headed for an open stretch near the Black Lake.

Cho was radiant in the air.

She drove the Nimbus through a series of turns, dives, and climbs until Edmund could see why she wanted the Seeker position.

Watching her, he quietly decided what her Christmas present would be.

He could not simply give her this broom after accepting it from Flitwick.

A new Nimbus 2000 of her own, however, would be another matter.

…

Hogwarts settled into a routine over the following week.

The first-years adjusted to castle life, and the clearest sign of that adjustment was the growing amount of homework.

One afternoon, Edmund found Harry and Ron in the library pleading with Hermione to let them see her Potions essay.

Snape had assigned three feet of tightly written parchment, which the boys regarded as a personal attack.

Edmund was less troubled.

His previous life had given him ample experience turning limited material into respectable essays.

He also had Quidditch tryouts to occupy him.

Both he and Cho earned places on the Ravenclaw team.

Cho became the new Seeker, while Edmund chose to play Beater.

His explanation was simple.

“You focus on catching the Snitch.

I’ll make sure nothing reaches you.” Cho had no defense against that.

She rose on her toes and kissed him, to the mixed amusement and suffering of the rest of the team.
