Seven days later.
Shenhai City Supervision Office.
Countless genomic maps floated in the profound void. Two enormous three-dimensional nucleotide-sequence diagrams hung suspended in midair, their entwined chains glowing with a faint blue light, illuminating Shen Zhuo’s silent, slender profile. His plain lenses flickered with a dim gleam before his eyes.
A surveillance recording was playing on the tablet at the control console. It showed the corridor on basement level one of the Supervision Office seven days earlier. On the screen, Bai Sheng was tightly pressing down on a wound pouring blood, while Rong Qi sat in his wheelchair with a posture that could only be described as leisurely and composed, facing the Witch of Italdo not far away.
“You were never a creature of this planet to begin with, yet Shen Zhuo suppressed you inside a human body. Even your power has been suppressed to the utmost limit… Dig out Bai Sheng’s heart, and I will set you free. I will completely restore your true, original power.”
…
With a thunderous crash, the Witch was slammed into the ruins of a brick wall, coughing blood as she spat out a string of profanity no one could understand. Rong Qi, the target of her insults, revealed an amused expression.
Shen Zhuo pressed pause.
“Do you think Rong Qi understood her language at the time?” he asked without looking back.
Shui Ronghua stood solemnly behind Shen Zhuo, her long curls casually twisted up with a pen. Hearing that, she shook her head. “Italdo herself has already forgotten the specific meaning of those words. She only remembers they were used for cursing. I’ve asked her many times before. Her memories of her homeworld are already too blurred.”
“…” Shen Zhuo frowned.
“Endless war, slaughter, exile. Then long hibernation, drifting without control over herself… until she drifted across countless light-years and fell to Earth together with a meteorite under its gravitational pull.” Shui Ronghua sighed. “That is everything she can remember as a consciousness.”
Shen Zhuo said nothing. Two fingers tapped the tabletop lightly and rhythmically, as though he was thinking something over.
Shui Ronghua carefully observed his expression. After a long while, she finally could not help asking, “Do you think that man named Rong Qi could possibly have come from the same place as Italdo…?”
Shen Zhuo lifted his eyes toward the air. The DNA double helix was like the twin serpents coiling around each other in the legendary Garden of Eden, silent, vast, slowly intersecting, reflected in the depths of his eyes.
That was Rong Qi’s genomic map, extracted from the wire hospital bed at Quanshan County Health Center.
“He clearly stated the success rate and loss-of-control radius of causal law, and those data are things even Bai Sheng himself has no way to test.” Shen Zhuo said softly, “I hope not, but the worst truth will not shift according to my hopes.”
He paused, then suddenly asked, “What do you think that sudden evolution five years ago really was?”
Shui Ronghua said, “Pandora’s box falling from the sky?”
Shen Zhuo gave a short laugh. “…Pandora’s box doesn’t fall from the sky.”
“Twelve million years ago, African crustal movement drove large numbers of ape populations to extinction. The ancient apes that survived east of the Great Rift Valley were forced down from the trees and began deriving toward land. Eight million years ago, the equatorial belt shrank, and Nakalipithecus died out in large numbers due to vegetation changes. Populations that could adapt to arid environments gradually evolved into hominins. Two and a half million years ago, the African climate deteriorated, and freezing droughts arrived. Australopithecines dependent on savanna grasslands died in groups, while a small number of populations that learned to use tools evolved into Homo habilis. Seventy thousand years ago, the Toba catastrophe erupted with an explosive yield of one billion tons. Humanity suffered a population bottleneck during the long global glacial period. Homo sapiens left Africa, merged with Neanderthals and Denisovans, and survived and reproduced until today.”
“Evolution is a long, painful metamorphosis over tens of millions of years. Only upheaval and extinction can bring new life, yet that meteor shower five years ago was like a surprise gift package falling from the sky.” Shen Zhuo said, “I do not believe such kindness exists in the vast universe. I only want to know in what form those unpaid costs intend to make humanity repay them.”
Shui Ronghua’s gaze fell on the enormous DNA double helix in midair. After a long while, she patted Shen Zhuo’s shoulder.
“I also wish sudden evolution had never happened, but it is already too late.” She said gently, “We can only do everything we can to maintain the status quo. All senior researchers are willing to devote their lives until the day the HRG Plan can no longer be sustained.”
Shen Zhuo silently shook his head and casually shut off the projection. Countless faintly glowing blue sequence maps vanished from the air in an instant.
“Submit Rong Qi’s genetic information to the International Supervision General Administration. Do everything possible to trace all his movements and information worldwide.” He took off his white medical coat and casually threw it into the disposal sink. “That man will not stop here. For all we know, he may show up at Nielsen’s bedside in the middle of the night one day and stab him to death. Tell him to be careful himself.”
Shui Ronghua could not help laughing.
Shen Zhuo pushed open the laboratory door. Driver Luo Zhen was waiting outside and looked to have recovered almost completely. The right forearm that had previously been chopped off had been replaced with a titanium-alloy mechanical hand. The engineering department had loaded it with a miniature missile-launch port and thoughtfully installed a Gaode navigation system in the arm as well, making it look extremely cool. He saluted honestly. “Supervisor.”
Shen Zhuo gave a hum and ordered, “Call Chen Miao over. I have something to tell him.”
“Yes!” Luo Zhen immediately took out his phone and walked aside.
As Shen Zhuo walked toward the elevator, he glanced at the time and said to Shui Ronghua without looking back, “Last time we summoned the Witch of Italdo at Quanshan County Health Center, and according to the previous contract, the offering to her has already been prepared. Have her come with me to B City tomorrow.”
Shui Ronghua followed behind him and nodded. Then she suddenly remembered something and hesitated. “Um… Supervisor.”
“What?”
“Italdo… asked me a question that day.”
Shen Zhuo pressed the elevator button and gave her a puzzled glance.
Shui Ronghua’s expression was beyond words. “She asked me what Chanel is.”
“…”
“She said she wants to buy Chanel.”
“…”
The air fell quiet. Shen Zhuo’s eyes clearly wrote, What the hell? After a long while, he said, “Have Chen Miao take my salary card and bring her shopping. Three at most. No more than that. Who mentioned that something called Chanel exists on Earth to her?”
Shui Ronghua was still hesitating over whether to sell out a certain wealthy second-generation Bai when the elevator doors opened with a ding. Luo Zhen, who had just gone to make the call, rushed back with his phone in hand, looking utterly distraught. “Supervisor! Wait, Supervisor! Something happened to Team Leader Chen!”
Shen Zhuo’s steps halted.
“Team Leader Chen, Team Leader Chen was kidnapped on the street when he went downstairs to buy milk tea. The Second Operations Team couldn’t catch up. The kidnappers were driving a Rolls-Royce Cullinan!”
“………………”
Under everyone’s eyes, Shen Zhuo’s expression became extremely hard to describe. After a long while, he slowly said,
“…Call the traffic police first. Issue Baihe Group ten tickets. Write speeding.”
·
At the same time, a construction site somewhere in Shenhai City.
The top floor of the Unfinished Building was open to the wind on all sides. The cement walls had exposed rebar, the space was wide and unobstructed, and a punching sandbag hung from the top of a wall.
BANG! BANG-BANG-BANG! BANG—
Bai Sheng struck with a heavy uppercut, and the sandbag weighing more than two hundred kilograms instantly flew upward.
“So, Brother Bai?” Chen Miao sat on a wooden chair with a backrest not far away, both hands cooperatively tied behind him, his expression bored.
Behind the chair, several evolutionists stood guard around him with wary faces, ready at any moment in case he broke free and jumped up to run.
“Senior told you about the HRG Plan, kicked you out of the hospital, and then you two have been in a cold war for seven days, with neither of you paying attention to the other.” Chen Miao sighed. “Isn’t that pretty good? Why did you have people kidnap me?”
With a smack, Bai Sheng caught the sandbag rebounding toward him head-on. The thing went from swinging violently back to complete stillness without even the slightest buffer, instantly stopping steadily in his arms.
“Pretty good?” Bai Sheng raised an eyebrow and asked in a strangely sarcastic tone.
“…” Chen Miao looked around and said with complete sincerity, “At least it’s better than Senior finding out that you built a secret base like this right under his nose and are sheltering dozens of evolutionists, right? Don’t you know Shenhai City has regulations? Group gatherings of evolutionists are forbidden. In ancient times, behavior like yours would be called amassing private troops and intending rebellion. This building would be your rebel base. Your nine generations would be executed. Understand?”
The evolutionists behind him immediately glared, the meaning being, You Supervision Office dog, shut up already.
Bai Sheng released the sandbag, hooked one hand under the hem of his T-shirt to wipe off sweat, revealing strong, beautiful abdominal muscles, and raised the index finger of his other hand, wagging it. “That statement is mistaken.”
Chen Miao made an expression of humbly awaiting instruction.
Bai Sheng said, “First, with your senior’s supervision methods, this building cannot be considered much of a secret at all. He just has not found a reason to send troops to encircle and suppress it yet. Second, this building is not some rebel base, either. It merely gives a small number of compatriots who cannot integrate into society a place to stay.”
Chen Miao said, “Heh.”
“If one day in the future you’re fired by Supervisor Shen, you’re welcome to come here and scrape together a living too. It would be better than having no way out and going off to rob a bank, right?”
“?!” Chen Miao immediately lifted his head and straightened his chest, as though he had suffered the greatest humiliation imaginable. “I am a dignified master of evolutionary biology! I would never rob a— No, wait, how could I be fired when I’m so obedient and capable? I will forever be Senior’s favorite little junior!”
“Enough, enough, chief eunuch.” Bai Sheng walked to the water dispenser, waving a hand while getting water. Those evolutionists obediently lowered their heads and dispersed, withdrawing through the door.
Chen Miao immediately broke free of the ropes in a few swift movements, hissing in pain as he shook out his wrists, when he heard Bai Sheng say, “I brought you here so you could help me think of a method.”
“?”
Bai Sheng said solemnly, “Your senior and I have already been in a cold war for seven full days.”
Chen Miao nodded in understanding. “His Majesty has already gone seven full days without summoning you to bed.”
“How does a child like you talk? Do you know what a cold war is?” Bai Sheng emphasized heavily, “He hasn’t paid attention to me. I haven’t paid attention to him, either. Both sides are mutually not paying attention to each other. Understand?”
“…” Chen Miao humbly asked for guidance. “Then the method you need me to think of now is?”
Bai Sheng immediately asked, “How do I make His Majesty summon me to bed again?”
Chen Miao covered his forehead and leaned back in the chair, heaving a long sigh.
“Brother Bai, I cannot understand this.” He spoke from the heart. “Is the Koenigsegg not fun to drive, or is being the top spender not fun to play? If you’re really bored, can’t you just open an electronics factory and go in to tighten screws yourself? Normal people see our Supervision Office and wish they could take a detour around it. Why do you insist on making Senior pay attention to you?”
Bai Sheng said solemnly, “Because I want to take the civil-service exam.”
Chen Miao: “Pfft—”
Chen Miao almost choked on his own saliva and waved a hand. “Brother Bai, I’m begging you. Can you change it to a normal person’s reason?”
“…” Bai Sheng pondered for a moment, then accepted the advice readily. “Because my lifelong dream and pursuit is to fight for world peace and devote my life to protecting Earth—I just want to be a civil servant!”
“Pfft!”
Fortunately Chen Miao was not drinking water, or he would now have sprayed his entire windpipe out of his mouth.
“What’s with that expression?” Bai Sheng crossed his arms impatiently. “I am a dignified S-Class. Wherever I go, people beg me to join the Supervision Office. Do you know what kind of treatment the other S-Classes get? If this were some small African country, I could even establish myself as a chieftain. Did you know that?”
Chen Miao said, “I know, I know…”
“I worked for your Shenhai City Supervision Office three times for free. When your senior was being hunted by that lunatic Rong, he held onto my neck and refused to let go. Then the moment he woke up in the hospital, he turned around and denied everything. Listen to that yourself. Is that reasonable?”
Chen Miao thought, I reserve judgment on Senior’s actions, but I have some slight opinions about the part where he held onto your neck and refused to let go…
“Where is my official post? My salary? My injury and illness subsidy? Which department reimburses travel expenses?” Bai Sheng pressed him aggressively. “Your senior won’t even add me on WeChat. Has he made up his mind to use me without paying?”
Chen Miao thought, You’re right. Our senior really does plan to use you without paying…
“In short, today, you must think of a method to make Shen Zhuo lower himself and contact me first. If that really doesn’t work, then you can stay here as a hostage. I’ll tie you up and hang you outside the building as a logo. Later, Shen Zhuo can come personally to redeem you.”
Bai Sheng patted Chen Miao’s shoulder and turned toward the bathroom in the distance. Chen Miao was instantly frightened into a shiver. “Don’t, Brother Bai! Senior won’t come redeem me. Senior will tell me to take a three-foot white silk and hang myself!”
Knock, knock, knock. Just then, several knocks came at the door. One of the evolutionist subordinates poked his head in with a phone in hand. “Brother Bai, there are three people downstairs looking for you. All foreigners.”
Bai Sheng asked automatically, “Who?”
“One kid with two subordinates. Says he’s your friend from your time in America. Calls himself…” That person sounded a little puzzled. “The New York Supervision Office.”
At the rear entrance of the construction site, a Land Rover was parked outside the rusty iron gate. A little boy who looked no more than twenty, with blond hair and blue eyes, stood there with two bodyguards, staring at a black wolfhound inside the iron gate that was over half a man tall.
“Huff… huff…”
The wolfhound bared its sharp teeth and continuously let out threatening huffs. Its claws scraped smoking white marks into the cement ground.
“Billy Kingston.” The boy opened his credentials. “New York State Supervisor.”
The evolutionist holding the wolfhound looked at the ID photo, then at the so-called Supervisor before him, with highlighted hair, a punk leather jacket, brow, ear, lip, and nose piercings, looking exactly like a little male model from a Hollywood nightclub. His face showed a clear suspicion of, This has to be a damn fake ID, right?
“Oh, not every Supervisor is as rigid and old-fashioned as Shen Zhuo.” The boy gave a bored yawn. When he raised his hand, one could see that he had even painted his pinky nail with glittering polish. Then he turned back and complained to his subordinates in English, “How pitiful. These people can only live in slums? Do they even have a li~fe?”
“…” The evolutionist turned his head and lowered his voice into the phone. “Who are these people? Are they here to sell Bitcoin? How about I release the dog and chase them out?”
The person on the other end of the phone immediately said, “No, no, no! Brother Bai said to bring them in quickly!”
“?”
“Brother Bai was especially happy. He said something like, ‘The bait’s here, the bait’s here. Watch me land a big one this time’…” On the top floor of the Unfinished Building, the subordinate watched the bathroom door slam shut like a whirlwind with his own eyes. “And now he’s flying around grooming himself. He said there’s hope today that he’ll fight for a civil-service post for himself in the best possible condition. What does that mean?”
“…”
Both ends of the phone sank into immense confusion at the same time.
Meanwhile, in a corner of the building’s top floor, Chen Miao crouched on the ground with WeChat in hand, looking as if he were facing a great enemy. “Hello, Senior, emergency! A few American devils have secretly infiltrated Shenhai to find Brother Bai. I’m guessing they’re most likely here to poach him! Hurry up and call me back!…”
·
That a place as valuable by the inch as Shenhai City could have such a massive unfinished project truly seemed contrary to common sense at first glance.
But once one entered, it became clear that the interior of the floors actually showed traces of electricity and renovation. There were even partitioned areas converted into a game room and an indoor basketball court.
“There are actually this many evolutionists gathered here…” a younger red-haired bodyguard said softly in English.
The three of them went up floor after floor along the open concrete stairs. On every floor, they ran into several evolutionists. Some were playing games, others were sleeping. On one floor, they had even dug out a sauna and swimming pool. A water-type ability user girl was swimming there as though no one else existed, her speed as fast as a white streak through the waves.
“Many lower-class members of the same kind gather around S-Class ability users. That is a normal phenomenon.” The older white man who appeared to be in his forties answered, looking around with a frown. “But this is a little strange. Supervisor Shen actually allows this many evolutionists to gather here… It really does not seem like his iron-fisted style.”
Kingston rolled his eyes without the slightest concealment. “This is an S-Class’s territory. Even that bastard surnamed Shen can only give in, right?”
“…”
The two bodyguards looked at each other. After a moment, the red-haired one lowered his voice and asked the other colleague, “Why do I feel like our chief especially hates Shenhai’s Supervisor Shen? Is there some history there?”
The older colleague immediately made a shushing gesture. Just as he was about to say something, the evolutionist leading the way stopped.
“We’re here. It’s this place.”
The top-floor space suddenly opened wide. The floor was an entire level of self-leveling concrete. At a glance, it was no less than six or seven hundred square meters, transformed into an industrial-style indoor gym.
In the distant corner, the bathroom door was tightly shut, and the sound of water spraying from the shower was coming through it.
Chen Miao gripped his phone tightly and stared at them warily. “M-Mr. Bai is showering. He said not to let anyone in. Please leave!”
Kingston: “…”
Kingston did not know Chen Miao. He tilted his head in confusion and thought for a moment. Suddenly, no one knew what occurred to him, but a little lightbulb went biu and lit up.
Then his eyes shone, and he went straight to the bathroom door, pushing it open directly.
“!!” Chen Miao nearly exploded on the spot. When he reacted, he immediately opened WeChat, his thumb flying with electric speed.
[Senior! The little foreign devil has a seductive face and slutty positioning. One look and you know he’s not a serious person. The corner is in danger!]
[Come quickly!!]
Splash—
Behind the frosted glass, steam rose, and water continuously washed over Bai Sheng’s tough, solid back. Every inch of his muscle line contained the beauty of power.
At that moment, there came a click behind him. The bathroom door opened and closed. Immediately afterward came a voice so alluring and seductive it reached the absolute extreme. “Hey~ Honey~”
The air suddenly fell quiet.
“Don’t do this, dear.” Bai Sheng swept his wet hair back with one hand and said without being moved, “As persecution and exploitation of women, honey traps are already feudal remnants of the last century. Every person with moral conscience should firmly resist them. Besides, you’re not even female.”
Kingston’s Chinese was not that good, and question marks instantly filled his head.
Feudal remnants? What did that mean?
“Besides, I am a civil servant with firm will. I have already refused your country’s Supervision Office’s kindness many times, so…”
Bai Sheng turned off the shower and grabbed a bath towel to wipe his stubbornly sticking-up hair.
“Turn off the recording, put on your clothes, or I will twist your head off, Supervisor Kingston.”
Kingston lost all interest and turned off the miniature camera pen in his shirt pocket.
“You’re too heartless.” He said regretfully, “In any case, we hired you at a high salary, sincerely persuaded you, and pestered and harassed you for full several years. Yet you left just like that and even boarded the plane under a false name. You really are a man without regard for old ties!”
“It was the last kindness I had as a human being that I did not flatten your country’s Supervision Office before I left,” Bai Sheng replied politely.
He changed into a clean, crisp shirt and trousers and pushed open the bathroom door to walk out. Chen Miao was holding his phone, filled with righteous indignation as he typed rapidly, even though the entire WeChat page was densely packed with messages he himself had sent, without a single reply from the other side.
[Don’t worry! Senior! I will bravely struggle against American imperialism and resolutely defend your corner!]
Bai Sheng slapped the back of his head with a smack, pulled out the phone, and cut him off. “Enough. Your mission is complete. Go play over there.”
Chen Miao covered his head. “Huh?”
“Pardon my boldness, Mr. Bai.” Kingston followed him step by step, still not giving up. “The New York State Supervision Office really does want to fight for you one more time. So as soon as we found your exit record, we immediately followed you here. Why would you give up everything you had in New York and run to Shenhai, this kind of—”
He spread his hands toward the surroundings. “Place without human rights?”
Bai Sheng picked up the roughly two-million-yuan green-dial luxury watch hanging on the dumbbell rack. While putting it on, he estimated the time it took to drive here from the Shenhai City Supervision Office and asked casually, “Where has no human rights?”
Kingston exaggeratedly raised his eyebrows, the ruby brow piercing flashing. “Don’t you know Shenhai’s Supervisor is Shen Zhuo?”
Bai Sheng said lightly, “Supervisor Shen? I know. He specially invited me to dinner yesterday.”
Chen Miao: “…”
Kingston: “…”
Kingston’s first reaction was exactly the same as Yue Yang’s had been back then. “You two are close?”
Bai Sheng’s movements paused, as if he had heard some inconceivable question. He asked back, “Close?”
“…”
With a clap, Bai Sheng pressed his palms together, his eyes flashing with sincere, earnest light. “How can the relationship between two people be defined by something as simple as close or not close? Supervisor Shen and I, the two of us—that is a relationship where we recognized each other as kindred spirits at first sight and regretted not meeting sooner, soulmates across mountains and rivers like true confidants, where one day apart feels like years!”
Kingston: “…………”
The pitiful little foreign devil thought he had lost his mind and instinctively looked toward his two subordinates for help. Both subordinates returned the same blank expression.
“Do you know? On the first day I got off the plane, Supervisor Shen specially brought a lot of people and came to the cabin door to greet me on his own initiative. He even helped me take my luggage and let me ride his special car home. He said he would definitely be very kind and friendly to me, and he also took the initiative to reveal part of the Supervisor’s Work Manual to me…”
“Stop, stop.” Kingston stammered as he cut him off. “Kind and friendly?”
Bai Sheng was completely natural. “Mm-hm.”
“Shen Zhuo?!”
“Mm-hm.”
“…”
Kingston’s expression looked as though his intelligence had been insulted. After a long while, he raised a hand and gestured forcefully in the air, emphasizing through gritted teeth, “That devil surnamed Shen is both arrogant and mean. It is impossible for him to be kind and friendly to anyone!”
Bai Sheng spread his hands and said, “If you insist on thinking that, there’s nothing I can do.”
“Don’t joke. How did all of you get fooled by him one after another?” Kingston was practically fuming from all seven orifices. “Shen Zhuo is two-faced. To those below Class A, he tortures them like a demon in every possible way, while to S-Classes, he pretends to have an upright and innocent face. Do you know who the last S-Class he fooled was? Fu Chen from Asia back then. I suspect that man would have been willing to dig out his heart and lungs for Shen Zhuo, and in the end, wasn’t he still killed by Shen Zhuo’s own hands?”
Chen Miao’s head was forcibly suppressed by Bai Sheng’s palm. He struggled and angrily rebuked, “That isn’t what happened at all! Brother Fu, he… Senior… mmph mmph mmph…”
“And there is also our director-general of the International Supervision General Administration, Odin’s Wolf, Nielsen.” Kingston crossed his arms, his glitter-highlighted eyelids rolling upward without the slightest concealment. “In private, we all suspect that in his heart, living creatures in this world are divided into only two kinds. One is Shen Zhuo. The other is all the unknown, unimportant trash besides Shen Zhuo. If you had access to the internal Supervisor forum, you could go up and take a look at everyone’s discussions. Shen Zhuo’s fatal attraction to S-Classes can practically be described as mystical. One comes, one dies. Two come, a pair dies. For a while, we suspected that Shen Zhuo might have some kind of witchcraft or black magic…”
“What nonsense!” Chen Miao was dumbstruck. “What kinds of messed-up topics do you Supervisors usually discuss?”
“In short, get yourself out early. Do not submit to the Great Demon King surnamed Shen.” With punk metal accessories jangling around his wrist, Kingston pushed a hand through his blond hair, which had been dyed peach-pink, and threw Bai Sheng a flirtatious wink. “Come back to New York with me. I can offer you twice Shenhai’s salary, and I can also make you very happy.”
Bai Sheng laughed.
“Really? That sounds very attractive.” He rose from the shadow in the corner and looked at his watch with satisfaction. His handsome face glittered with teasing amusement. “But pardon me for being unable to obey, because compared with happiness, I still prefer fishing…”
Fishing?
The little foreign devil was utterly baffled. At that moment, the young bodyguard answered a call, and his expression changed. “Chief, something’s wrong downstairs.”
“What?”
“A Shenhai City Supervision Office official car has arrived.”
Kingston instantly looked as if he had been stabbed by a steel needle. He looked out through the empty window of the Unfinished Building. “Shen Zhuo?!”
“Woof! Woof woof woof! Woof woof woof!!” At the rear entrance of the construction site, the wolfhound suddenly barked wildly and charged forward, ramming the iron bars like a small calf.
Outside the construction site, a black bulletproof official car slowly came to a stop. Immediately afterward, the driver got out and swiftly opened the door. Shen Zhuo’s slender, upright figure in black stepped out. With one glance, he caught sight of the Land Rover parked by the sidewalk with Country M diplomatic plates, and his movements stopped.
Kingston: “…”
The two bodyguards: “…”
Shen Zhuo turned back and looked toward the top floor of the Unfinished Building.
—Though the distance was clearly so great, the three foreigners simultaneously felt the illusion that they had already been seized by that icy gaze.
The next moment, they saw the Chief Supervisor of Shenhai City walk back to his own car, open the trunk, lift out a Supervision Office special-issue submachine gun, turn, and aim at the Land Rover—
BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG!!
The car windows shattered. The doors caved in. Special electric-current rounds fell like a violent storm, circling three hundred and sixty degrees around the Land Rover until it was beaten into a deformed sieve. Every evolutionist in the entire building was startled by the sound and stared outside, dumbfounded.
The moment Shen Zhuo’s gunfire stopped, he aimed at the gas tank—
BOOM!
A mass of fire rose from the ground. The entire vehicle turned into scrap metal.
In the firelight, Shen Zhuo’s face did not ripple in the slightest. Immediately afterward, he turned around, and the last magazine of bullets blasted the construction-site gate straight off its hinges.
BANG!!
With a heaven-shaking boom, the twisted iron gate smashed into the dirt, throwing up dust several meters high.
The entire building was filled with a terrifying dead silence. Every evolutionist’s expression went blank. They could hardly believe their own eyes.
“…We’ve already been surrounded by him, haven’t we?” After a long while, someone squeezed out a trembling sentence.
Without saying a word, Shen Zhuo tossed the emptied submachine gun to the driver, straightened the front of his suit, and strode into the construction site. When he passed the guardhouse, the wolfhound whimpered and rubbed against his pant leg.
