!
Song Yu hesitated for a moment, then stepped forward and grabbed Uncle Li.
“Uncle Li, don’t be rash.”
“Let go! That’s my wife, my wife!” Uncle Li roared at Song Yu, his face twisted with rage.
Song Yu had never seen Uncle Li look like this. He froze for a moment, then shouted back, “Calm down! You’ll get yourself killed if you go over there.”
Song Yu frowned and took out another Rolling Pin, about three handspans long.
“Take this to defend yourself.”
Then, with a wok spatula in his left hand and a Cleaver in his right, he finally felt safe enough to approach the battlefield where the two ghost creatures were fighting.
Watching them fight, Song Yu was a little confused.
According to the official guide, Vengeful Souls and Evil Ghosts had no Spiritual Intelligence at all. They acted entirely according to their own rules, and only Vengeful Ghosts and those above them might possess some degree of thought.
But the middle-aged Female Ghost that had suddenly emerged from Uncle Li, and the tall ghostly figure, were locked in combat. They had no technique and seemed to follow no rules at all.
They clawed and attacked each other, howling nonstop. It was a brutal sight; if blood had been flying, the scene would probably have been censored.
The smaller one was actually Uncle Li’s wife?
Song Yu was puzzled.
Uncle Li had always lived alone, with no children or wife. Song Yu had assumed he was a lifelong bachelor.
But he never expected Uncle Li to have a wife.
Only, it seemed his wife had turned into a ghost and had been following him around.
And she was quite powerful, too.
Holding the Cleaver, Song Yu worried that if he helped, Uncle Li’s wife might get carried away and attack him first. That would be a real farce.
But if he didn’t help, Uncle Li’s wife seemed close to being overwhelmed.
She didn’t dare touch the tall ghostly figure with four eyes, so she kept fighting it with the black whips that had formed in her hands.
As for the other one, aside from its tall body, was there something about it that made people afraid to touch it?
Song Yu reached a conclusion and decided to test it.
If he didn’t act soon, Uncle Li’s wife seemed liable to go berserk.
She was clearly different from the ghost creatures described in the official reports. She had a trace of reason, but Song Yu could see her gaze growing more and more crazed and bloodthirsty.
“You vile fiend, take this!”
Song Yu shouted and hurled the Cleaver in his hand.
The Cleaver flashed with a cold gleam, catching the attention of the two ghost creatures locked in a desperate fight.
Both sides briefly stopped. Uncle Li’s wife hurriedly retreated a short distance. The blood-red light in her eyes slowly faded, as did the crimson glow that had begun to appear on the black whip in her hand.
The tall ghostly figure paid no attention at all, simply letting the Cleaver fly toward it.
Song Yu even saw blood light gleaming in its four eyes.
Its body shuddered wildly, as if it had spotted a tasty meal.
But the next moment, the Cleaver hacked into its body, dispersing a large swath of Black Mist.
“Awooo…”
The ghostly figure let out a miserable howl.
“Why does that howl sound like a dog that’s just been kicked?”
Song Yu tossed out the remark, then flicked his right hand. The Cleaver flew back, and he hurriedly dodged aside as it plunged into the ground.
At some point, he had tied a rope more than three meters long to the handle. Now he was frantically winding it up.
He had more than just a rope. Two stainless-steel plates were strapped to his chest and back, giving him a full sense of security.
After the Cleaver struck it, the ghostly figure seemed to have triggered some kind of reaction. It could only howl in pain instead of attacking Song Yu immediately.
This gave Song Yu an idea.
Besides being effective against ghost creatures, did the Cleaver perhaps come with a pain-amplifying ability?
Black Mist billowed, but it couldn’t fill in the gash left by the Cleaver. The ghostly figure twisted its body, leaving the two people and one ghost present somewhat stunned.
Song Yu already had experience chopping up his first ghost. Rather than keep admiring the tall ghostly figure’s rhythmic howling rap, he hurled the Cleaver again.
“Awooo…”
The howling grew much louder.
At last, the other one turned to look at Song Yu, seemingly ready to fight back.
“Come on.”
Song Yu yanked the Cleaver back. With a Divine Weapon in each hand, he beckoned with the Cleaver.
“Ah…”
Just then, Uncle Li’s wife went berserk.
Her piercing shriek made Song Yu shudder.
But he quickly took several steps back, watching as Uncle Li’s wife seemed to have swallowed a potent tonic. The whips in both hands lashed relentlessly at the tall ghostly figure.
In the blink of an eye, all four of its eyes were whipped blind. The eyeballs seemed solid and were actually knocked right out.
Uncle Li’s wife was indiscriminate in what she ate. Like a ghost, she suddenly vanished and reappeared, blocking the four eyeballs before swallowing them all in one gulp.
Song Yu’s vision blurred for a moment. He vaguely felt the Space around him shift.
Just a little more?
After waiting two seconds, Song Yu found that the surroundings had stabilized again. He couldn’t help feeling disappointed.
But after a moment of regret, he mercilessly hurled the Cleaver again.
This time, the Cleaver struck the ghostly figure in the chest and passed right through it.
A large swath of Black Mist dispersed, and the ghostly figure wavered, showing signs of becoming insubstantial.
Uncle Li’s wife suddenly turned toward Song Yu and let out a “heh-heh.”
Song Yu’s hand trembled, and he hurriedly put some distance between them.
He couldn’t be sure whether Uncle Li’s wife was good or evil, so he couldn’t afford to let his guard down.
She had just vanished without a sound and reappeared somewhere else. She could suddenly appear behind him and twist his head off with one claw.
At the very least, those two whips were long enough to pose a far greater threat than the clumsy ghostly figure.
The giant ghostly figure was still going berserk. Its limbs seemed to be swelling, and the wounds inflicted by the Cleaver had driven it completely mad.
But just then, after remaining still for about ten seconds, Uncle Li’s wife finally let a pale purple light burst from her eyes and pounced.
The two whips had grown much more nimble, and they completely bound the tall ghostly figure.
A terrifying crackling sound came from where the two touched, like cold water dripping into a pot of boiling oil.
Song Yu clicked his tongue in amazement. Amid their struggle, Uncle Li’s wife wore a horribly twisted expression, yet she was gradually gaining the upper hand and binding her opponent tightly.
Those three strikes of mine should have secured the victory.
I deserve the credit for this one.
As he watched with satisfaction, he was stunned to see Uncle Li’s wife suddenly let out a shrill cry and charge forward.
Wait, ma’am, aren’t you not supposed to touch it?
Uncle Li’s wife moved with incredible speed. She stopped right in front of the ghostly figure, just barely avoiding touching it, then greedily inhaled the Black Mist escaping from where the two whips constricted it.
In just two minutes, the ghostly figure had shrunk by a whole size.
Uncle Li walked over in a daze and stood beside Song Yu.
“Little Song, what… what’s going on?”
Song Yu glanced at him and saw that he looked bewildered, completely out of the loop.
“Uncle Li, is that really your wife?”
“It really is. Her voice is the same, just hoarser and more unpleasant.”
Song Yu said, “Really? She hasn’t said anything, just kept yelling.”
A trace of reminiscence appeared on Uncle Li’s face. “She used to yell at me all the time at home.”
Song Yu was speechless.
Five or six minutes later, the tall ghostly figure had shrunk to just one and a half meters, like an elementary school student. Then, with a pop, it was shredded by the two ghostly whips, completely turning into a mass of motionless Black Mist.
Only then did Uncle Li’s wife pounce on it completely. Wrapped in Black Mist, she began absorbing it frantically.
“Ah…”
She roared at the sky, the two long whips in her hands flailing like tentacles, as if venting some kind of emotion.
Her aura kept rising, making Song Yu want to turn tail and run.
Although he had kitchen utensils to protect him, Song Yu still felt they weren’t enough.
He couldn’t help wondering: Why wasn’t there a chef’s uniform in the kitchen?
With a chef’s uniform that demons and ghosts couldn’t penetrate, he’d be invincible from the start.
“Uncle Li, she’s looking this way.”
After saying that, Song Yu silently retreated behind Uncle Li.
Uncle Li didn’t notice his movement. His eyes were fixed on that familiar face and figure.
“Wife…”
He called softly.
But he realized that something seemed off about his wife. Her eyes had turned red, even redder than the tall ghostly figure’s four eyes had been, and seemed to give off blood light.
Hearing his call, she suddenly transformed into a string of afterimages and pounced.
“Uncle Li, watch out!”
Song Yu shouted and immediately hurled the Cleaver in his hand.
