The sharp blade in Lin Buyu’s hand gleamed under the moonlight.

Lin Buyu was skilled with firearms, but she was equally proficient with knives and daggers.

Dr. Yang frantically shook the bell, causing the zombies to grow restless. They let out guttural “heh-heh” sounds as Lin Buyu charged toward them.Full novel: Help! I Don’t Want to Be the Ultimate Beauty in the Apocalypse! — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Lin Buyu thought they would immediately attack her.

But they didn’t.

The zombie at the very front glanced at her before suddenly turning around and fleeing in the opposite direction.

The two zombies behind it followed.

Don’t let it get away.

That was Lin Buyu’s first thought.

These zombies clearly weren’t under Dr. Yang’s control. It was almost as though they had been pretending.

So she immediately chased after them.

Jiang Ran didn’t like dragging things out on the battlefield. Since Lin Buyu had gone after the zombies, his choice was to trust her.

Without hesitation, he turned and charged toward Jiang Congwen.

This time, he showed no mercy.

The purple lightning power that had originally been capable of producing only a dozen or so bolts had now expanded to dozens.

Every single bolt struck the ice flowers Jiang Congwen fired with pinpoint accuracy.

Meanwhile, Lin Buyu had already caught up with the three zombies.

The fastest zombie was the first to turn around.

The other two quickly moved behind it.

Lin Buyu guessed that this zombie possessed intelligence.

The two sides faced each other.

The eyes of the zombie standing in front were a deep sapphire blue.

That meant it might soon evolve into the highest level of zombie—the purple-eyed, extremely dangerous type.

The same level as the Zombie King’s younger sister.

The zombie stared at her but didn’t attack.

Lin Buyu issued a command in her mind.

“Come here.”

The zombie didn’t obey.

Instead, it parted its lips and made a series of guttural “heh-heh” sounds. At the same time, its voice echoed directly inside her mind.

“I’m an artificially modified high-level zombie. You can’t control me.”

Tsk.

Just as she had suspected.

At least they could communicate.

“Why are you working for humans?” the zombie asked her.

A look of hatred flashed through its sapphire-blue eyes.

“Have you been controlled by humans too?”

Lin Buyu shook her head.

“No one can control me. Since you still possess your own thoughts, you should understand that we were all human once. Our purpose shouldn’t be to kill humans.”

The moment she said this, the zombie suddenly let out a furious roar.

Its harsh, grating voice exploded through the air, making Lin Buyu instinctively cover her ears.

It couldn’t speak with human words, but it could communicate with her through their minds.

Its furious voice thundered inside her head:

“Not a single human is good! Humans were the ones who pushed me into the mouths of zombies and turned me into one of them! Even if we were human once, we aren’t anymore. They drive out anything they consider different. From the moment we become zombies, even our closest family members refuse to accept us. They immediately point guns at our heads. Come with me. As long as you cooperate with me, we can wipe out all of humanity and rule the world!”

For fuck’s sake. Rule the world?

These days, it wasn’t just humans trying to take advantage of the apocalypse to rule the world.

Even zombies wanted to rule the world.

Everyone’s apparently got a damn career plan.

Lin Buyu spread her right hand, the dagger in it reflecting a cold gleam beneath the moonlight.

“If our positions are different, then we can only go our separate ways. If you want to wipe out humanity, you’ll have to get past me first.”

“Heh-heh… heh-heh…”

All three zombies snarled at her.

The sapphire-eyed zombie gave Lin Buyu a deep look.

“We’re different from ordinary zombies. With your current abilities, you can’t kill me, and I can’t kill you.”

“Heh. What, you want to just part ways and meet again another day?”

Lin Buyu tightened her grip on the dagger.

In the blink of an eye, she flashed forward and appeared directly in front of the zombie.

“Dream on. I’ll finish you off.”

She moved so quickly that the three zombies barely had time to react.

A look of astonishment flashed through the sapphire-eyed zombie’s eyes.

Her hand rose.

The blade fell.

One zombie’s head was sliced clean off.

Lin Buyu’s movements were crisp and decisive, without the slightest hesitation.

With her right hand, she severed one zombie’s head. Then she spun around and delivered a vicious roundhouse kick, striking the zombie’s chest and sending it flying more than ten meters away.

This was the terrifying part about a special-forces soldier possessing the Zombie King’s abilities.

Lin Buyu never wasted movements on flashy techniques.

She always went straight for the vital points.

The sapphire-eyed zombie had barely been kicked away when the other zombie lunged at her.

Lin Buyu cut it cleanly in half at the neck.

After taking care of the two zombies, Lin Buyu immediately chased after the one she had kicked away.

She had to admit that artificially created high-level zombies were inferior to naturally evolved ones.

These two zombies were even weaker than the high-level zombies she had forcibly upgraded by feeding them her blood.

Just as Lin Buyu was about to catch up with the zombie she had communicated with, lightning suddenly flashed across the sky.

The system warned her inside her mind:

“Host, this is bad! A virus rain is about to arrive. Hurry back and take Jiang Ran somewhere safe. If Jiang Ran is exposed to the virus rain and turns into a zombie, he’ll become even more uncontrollable.”

Lin Buyu came to an abrupt stop.

“Wasn’t Jiang Ran supposed to survive until the end and fight against the male lead, almost destroying the world? How could he possibly become a zombie?”

The system wasn’t sure either.

It had only just received news that the world’s plot had been updated.

“Th-this world seems to be a fluid world. It isn’t completely bound by the original plot. Even this virus rain is a newly added plot development. Hurry back!”

“Fuck.”

Lin Buyu really wanted to curse.

The plot can actually update itself now? What kind of crappy book is this?

She was already close to catching the last artificially created zombie, so how could she simply give up?

She believed that after surviving in the apocalypse for a year, Jiang Ran definitely wasn’t an idiot. He would know to avoid the rain, even if he didn’t know anything about its special properties.

Besides, she had a strong feeling that if this zombie escaped, it would cause trouble later.

She wasn’t the type to leave potential problems behind.

So instead of stopping immediately, she pushed herself to her absolute limit and sprinted forward.

She quickly caught up with the sapphire-eyed zombie.

Realizing that it couldn’t escape, the zombie suddenly spun around.

It pushed off the ground with both legs and charged straight toward Lin Buyu, opening its mouth wide as it attempted to bite through her neck.

But how could Lin Buyu possibly give it the chance?

Her dagger moved so quickly that it was impossible to evade.

The moment they closed the distance, she transferred the dagger from her right hand to her left and slashed backward across the zombie’s neck.

She looked into the zombie’s terrified and unwilling eyes.

There wasn’t the slightest trace of pity in Lin Buyu’s clear gaze.

“From the moment you decided to turn the human world into a world of zombies, you and I stopped being on the same side.”

The zombie’s head fell to the ground, blood splattering everywhere.

Lin Buyu had always considered herself human.

No matter what happened.

If she ever became a mindless zombie that devoured humans, she would want someone to cut off her head immediately and preserve the last shred of dignity she had as a human being.

After eliminating the final zombie, Lin Buyu turned around without the slightest hesitation and hurried back toward Jiang Ran.

A light drizzle began falling from the sky.

The rain landed on Lin Buyu’s body, and strangely enough, she felt a sense of familiarity.

She lowered her head and glanced at the exposed skin on the back of her hand.

The rainwater was actually entering her skin.

She quickly asked the system what was happening.

The system wasn’t certain.

“Perhaps it’s because the virus rain contains the same source of virus as the one inside your body, so it doesn’t affect you.”

“Then will it increase the virus inside me and cause me to mutate into a mindless zombie?” Lin Buyu asked as she ran.

The system hesitated.

“In most cases, it can. But once you reach a sufficiently high level, I’m afraid it might not work that way.”

Although the answer wasn’t exactly reassuring, it was still better than being told it was completely impossible.

Lin Buyu suppressed the worry in her heart.

She was moving incredibly fast.

In less than a minute, she had returned to the place where Jiang Ran and the others had been fighting.

But the moment she looked ahead, Lin Buyu stopped in shock.

Roars, screams, cries, and the sounds of fighting had all blended together.

The entire scene made her feel that this world had completely fucking descended into chaos.

The virus had spread that quickly?

People were turning into zombies almost immediately after being exposed to the rain and then running around biting others.

It was terrifying.

Lin Buyu looked around.

Most of the people who had turned into zombies were the ability users who had been surrounding Jiang Ran and the others moments earlier.

Suddenly, a figure rushed toward her, running while making guttural “heh-heh” sounds.

When it reached her and realized that she wasn’t human, it simply passed her by and continued running.

Lin Buyu turned around.

“Ah! Help!”

It was a young girl.

She stared at the zombie in terror and screamed.

Lin Buyu rushed over, preparing to save her.

But suddenly, she saw the girl’s neck jerk unnaturally.

In less than a second, the girl transformed into a zombie.

She then frantically ran in another direction.

She was off to play the human-eating game.

Lin Buyu stopped in her tracks.

She looked around in every direction.

But she couldn’t see Jiang Ran, Xiao Jingcheng, or the others anywhere.
