How could Lin Buyu possibly fail to sense the killing intent coming from the other person?
She tried her best to make herself look harmless and spoke in a soft, gentle voice.
“I really am human. Please, don’t kill me… ah!”
Without warning, the dagger in Jiang Ran’s hand sliced across her arm, and bright red blood immediately began flowing from the wound.
Lin Buyu’s eyes widened.
Damn, no wonder he’s the villain. He really doesn’t act like a human being.
She covered her injured arm with one hand, her almond-shaped eyes opened wide.
If she hadn’t known how dangerous this man was, she could have made sure he wouldn’t live to see another sunrise.
Jiang Ran lifted his eyes and glanced at Lin Buyu.
Just moments ago, her eyes had been filled with tears, making her look pitiful and helpless. Now, however, they were wide open as she stared straight at him.
After a year in the apocalypse, most people had lost their sharpness and vitality.
This was the first time he had seen such lively eyes in a living person’s face.
It was as though she had never experienced the days of going hungry in the apocalypse or living under the constant threat of death.
“Didn’t you say you were human? I was just testing you. Since you really are human, then… my apologies.”
A smile returned to his eyes, but it didn’t reach their depths.
A demon’s smile.
That was the phrase that popped into Lin Buyu’s mind.
Her main task right now was to get close to Jiang Ran, so she couldn’t afford to offend him.
Suppressing her disgust, she continued in a gentle tone, “I understand. A strange woman suddenly appearing here would naturally make you suspicious. But please believe me. My appearance here really was just an accident.”
Her soft voice seemed to drift into Jiang Ran’s ears like a gentle breeze.
He looked at her with an amused yet unreadable expression as she continued her performance.
“I believe it was an accident,” he said. “Goodbye, Miss Accident.”
The meaning behind his words was obvious: This has nothing to do with me.
He turned around and walked toward the helicopter with his long legs.
There was no way Lin Buyu couldn’t understand what he meant.
She hurried after him.
“Hey, wait!”
The man didn’t stop.
Lin Buyu clicked her tongue.
Damn villain. He’s really cold-hearted.
But she absolutely refused to give up.
She quickened her pace, stepped in front of him, and spread her arms to block his path.
Jiang Ran raised his eyes and looked at her.
In that single glance, Lin Buyu saw genuine indifference in his eyes.
“Miss Accident, is there anything else you want to say?”
His voice clearly carried a hint of amusement, yet somehow it gave her a bone-chilling feeling.
Lin Buyu wanted to rub her arms.
Fortunately, the system had given her a great deal of information about Jiang Ran.
“Are you from the Lan Base? I heard that you accept anyone who has nowhere to go and doesn’t belong to any organization.”
With every word she spoke, the smile in his eyes deepened.
Only after she finished did he slowly repeat her words.
“People who have nowhere to go?”
His casual attitude made it clear that he didn’t take Lin Buyu seriously at all.
Lin Buyu knew that her sudden appearance here was highly suspicious.
After all, there had been more than a hundred zombies here just moments ago.
The fact that she was completely unharmed was already the biggest problem.
“You’ve already checked me. I’m not a high-level zombie. I’m a normal human being. As for why I appeared here, it really was just a coincidence.”
“I originally had a group of like-minded companions. One of them had an extremely powerful ability, and it was because of his protection that all of us had been able to live comfortably and never worry about food or clothing.”
“We came to the shopping mall today to look for supplies, but unexpectedly, a zombie horde broke out. One of my companions activated a spatial ability and helped everyone relocate. I twisted my ankle and couldn’t keep up with them, so…”
“So you almost got surrounded by zombies. Then our helicopter arrived, and the noise attracted the zombies’ attention, allowing you to escape safely. Is that right?”
Jiang Ran finished her story for her.
Most people would have found it difficult to continue lying after being exposed like that.
But Lin Buyu wasn’t most people.
She had thick skin and wasn’t afraid of sarcasm.
“Benefactor, you guessed it exactly!”
She excitedly stepped forward and grabbed his arm. Her voice was filled with enthusiasm.
“So, can you take me with you to the Lan Base?”
Jiang Ran lowered his eyes and glanced at her hands.
Two delicate, fair hands rested on the sleeve of his black uniform.
The girl before him had an extraordinarily beautiful face that seemed untouched by the hardships of the mortal world. She smiled brightly as she looked at him.
In the apocalypse, because of their lack of abilities, many handsome men and beautiful women had been forced to offer their bodies in exchange for protection when they had no other choice.
Her intimate gesture seemed to be sending him another kind of signal.
Jiang Ran had encountered plenty of situations like this before.
His gaze moved away from her face. Without a hurry, he lowered her hands from his arm and then strode forward.
“Follow me.”
Did that actually work?
Lin Buyu’s lips curled into a grin. She almost couldn’t keep up her act and happily hurried after him.
Nie Fei saw Jiang Ran go over alone and return with a beautiful young woman.
He couldn’t help blurting out, “Fuck.”
He looked at Jiang Ran, his eyes silently asking what the hell was going on.
Jiang Ran understood his question and casually explained, “A poor woman who got separated from her people. She wants to join our base.”
Separated from her people? Poor woman? Wants to join the base?
Nie Fei thought to himself, Do you actually believe that?
The girl was sitting in the back seat. When she had followed Jiang Ran over, Nie Fei had already looked her over several times.
A defenseless young woman had suddenly appeared in the middle of a small-scale zombie horde and walked away completely unharmed.
No matter how he looked at it, someone like that had nothing to do with being helpless or unfortunate.
Besides, it had already been a year since the apocalypse began.
What kind of unfortunate person could still look so fair and well-fed after a year of the apocalypse, not to mention wearing such clean clothes?
There were conflicts between the various bases.
Nie Fei strongly suspected that she had been sent by another base as a beautiful spy.
Jiang Ran noticed all of Nie Fei’s doubts.
The corner of his lips lifted slightly as he reminded him, “If you don’t take off soon, we’ll attract even more zombies. Then we’ll have to waste more of our abilities.”
His reminder snapped Nie Fei back to reality.
He hurriedly started the helicopter.
Lin Buyu sat in the back, keeping her eyes lowered and pretending she knew nothing.
She covered her injured arm and looked out the window.
Below them, countless zombies staggered through the streets toward the shopping mall.
If nothing unexpected happened, these zombies had probably been drawn there by the smell of her blood.
Although the system had helped conceal her identity from Jiang Ran, her true nature was that of a Zombie King capable of influencing all zombies.
Her blood could cause zombies to evolve.
Once exposed to the air, it would be an irresistible temptation to the zombies.
Fortunately, they had left in time.
The helicopter soon departed from the city center.
Neither Jiang Ran nor Nie Fei looked down, so neither of them noticed the strange scene below.
No base would ever be established inside a city, because cities were where zombies gathered in the greatest numbers.
The Lan Base was located in an area surrounded by mountains.
The helicopter landed on the roof of the tallest building.
Nie Fei and Jiang Ran climbed out first.
Lin Buyu followed them.
There was no way down from the rooftop.
Nie Fei had already jumped straight off the roof.
Flames surrounded his body, slowing his descent until he gently landed on the ground.
This was Lin Buyu’s first time seeing someone jump off a building so casually.
Her eyelid twitched violently.
She quickly realized what was happening.
It was their supernatural ability.
Jiang Ran turned his head and looked at her.
“Miss Accident, you should have an ability too, right?”
