The path climbed gently upward, winding through soft, green slopes carpeted with flowers that seemed to lean toward us as we passed.
The mist from the waterfall rose all around, clinging lightly to our sleeves and sparkling like tiny diamonds in the endless, golden light.
Lucian walked beside me, his hand never releasing mine, his steps steady and sure, as if he had walked this climb a thousand times before — and indeed, I realized, perhaps he had.
Perhaps he had climbed this very path, alone, year after year, century after century, waiting for the day he would finally bring someone beside him.
Waiting for me.When at last we reached the top, the path opened out wide — and I stopped, breathless and silent, my heart swelling within my chest at the sight that lay before us.Stretching out beyond the waterfall’s edge was a great, endless sea.
Its waters were not blue, not green, but a soft, radiant hue that seemed to hold all the colors of the sky — pearl and lavender and pale gold, shifting and blending in gentle, endless waves.
The surface shimmered as if lit from beneath, and the water stretched on and on until it met the glowing horizon, where sky and sea melted into one and could no longer be told apart.
There was no wind here, no storm, no roar of crashing waves — only a soft, rhythmic sound as the water breathed and rose and fell, a quiet, living rhythm that matched the beating of my own heart.Lucian stepped to my side, his gaze resting gently upon my face rather than the sea before us.”This is the source,” he said softly, his voice blending perfectly with the quiet breathing of the waters.
“This is where the waterfall begins.
It pours itself out endlessly, yet it never grows less.
It gives everything, yet it remains full.
It flows downward to nourish the land below, yet its own depths remain untouched and whole.”He turned fully toward me then, and lifted both my hands in his, holding them gently between his own.”I told you below,” he continued, his eyes deep and bright and overflowing with love, “that the waterfall reminds me of us.
That we flow onward, giving and growing and never running dry.
And this place…
this sea…
this reminds me of where our love truly comes from.
It comes from something endless.
Something bottomless.
Something that existed long before we ever met, and will remain long after all else has faded away.”He gestured toward the shimmering waters, then looked back at me with tender devotion.”Just as this sea feeds the waterfall,” he said quietly, “so does your heart feed mine.
You are the source.
You are the endless, shining depth from which all my joy flows.
And no matter how much I love you — no matter how many lifetimes I spend pouring my heart out to you — I shall never reach the bottom of it.
I shall never exhaust it.
Because your love is infinite.
And so…
therefore…
is mine.”Tears rose soft and warm in my eyes, and I turned to look again at the great, glowing sea — vast, peaceful, and endlessly beautiful.
Then I looked back at him — at the man who had walked alone for centuries, climbing this very path, standing beside these waters, dreaming of the day he would bring me here.”And you stood here,” I asked gently, “all those years ago?
Alone?”Lucian nodded slowly, his gaze softening with the memory.”I stood here,” he answered.
“I stood here and looked out across the waters and imagined you standing beside me.
I imagined what your voice would sound like, echoing across the waves.
I imagined what your hand would feel like resting in mine.
I imagined the way your eyes would light up when you saw this beauty — and I knew, even then, that you would shine brighter than all of it put together.”He stepped closer, and the gentle light of the sea fell upon his face, gilding his hair and catching the brightness in his eyes.”I came here often,” he confessed quietly.
“Whenever loneliness felt too heavy.
Whenever doubt whispered that perhaps you would never come.
I would climb this path and stand here and speak your name out loud — into the waters, into the light, into the endless sky.
And somehow…
I always felt you were listening.
Somewhere.
Across all the distance and all the time…
I always felt you were near.”My heart ached — sweetly, tenderly — at his words.
I lifted my hands and touched his face, cupping his cheeks, feeling the warmth of him beneath my palms.”And I was,” I whispered.
“I was near.
Even when I did not know your name.
Even when I did not know your face.
My heart was always reaching toward yours.
Just as yours reached toward mine.
That is why I found you.
That is why I chose you.
Because my soul already knew the way home.”Lucian closed his eyes and leaned into my touch, pressing his hand gently over mine, holding it there against his cheek as if he never wished to let go.
When he opened his eyes again, they glistened with bright, happy tears that caught the light like the sea itself.”And now,” he said, his voice trembling softly with joy, “here you are.
Standing beside me.
At the source.
At the beginning of everything I ever hoped for.
The waters have waited.
The light has waited.
And I…
I have waited longer than anyone.
And now…
my heart is full.”He turned and drew me gently toward the edge, where the water lapped soft and warm against smooth, white stones.
He knelt and cupped his hand, lifting clear, glowing water that sparkled like liquid starlight.”They say,” he told me, looking up at me with a quiet, radiant smile, “that whoever drinks from this sea shall never be parted again.
That their souls shall be bound not by oath or ceremony, but by something deeper — something that flows within them both forever.”He offered his hand, and I drank — cool, sweet, and impossibly pure, feeling as though it flowed through me and warmed my heart from within.
Then I knelt beside him, lifted water in my own hand, and offered it to him.
He drank from my palm, his eyes never leaving mine, and as the water touched his lips, he smiled — a smile so full of peace and completeness it seemed to hold the whole world within it.”Now,” he whispered, “we are bound.
Not by gold.
Not by words spoken before witnesses.
But by water.
And light.
And truth.
By something that flows from the same endless source.
So long as this sea exists…
we shall never be truly apart.
And this sea…
will never end.”We stood together then, side by side at the water’s edge, watching the gentle waves roll softly toward the shore.
The light breathed around us, warm and golden and endlessly kind.
Somewhere far across the waters, a soft, distant melody drifted — gentle and wordless, as if the sea itself were singing a blessing over us.Lucian wrapped his arm around my waist and drew me close, so I stood sheltered and safe against his side.
He rested his chin lightly upon my shoulder, and his voice was soft and filled with quiet wonder.”Do you know what I see when I look out across these waters?” he asked gently.
“I see eternity.
Stretching out before us.
Vast and beautiful and endless.
And do you know what makes it beautiful?”He turned his head and kissed my temple softly, then whispered close beside my ear.”Not the water.
Not the light.
Not the endless, shining shore.
It is beautiful…
because I see you walking through it all.
Beside me.
Step by step.
Forever.”I leaned my head against his chest, and he held me tighter, and together we stood there — two souls who had crossed lifetimes to find one another, standing at the source of all light, bound by water and love and endless grace.
The sea stretched out before us, vast and unending.
And so did our journey.
And so did our love.
