We remained there for a long while, standing hand in hand at the edge of the still, glowing cove, where the water mirrored the sky so perfectly it was impossible to tell where one ended and the other began.

The air was soft and warm, carrying no scent but the faint, clean sweetness of endless waters and the quiet, living breath of a world that knew no decay.

Lucian stood close beside me, his arm resting gently about my waist, his gaze drifting slowly from the lights beneath the water up to my face — as if he found more wonder in looking at me than in gazing upon all the beauty that surrounded us.”Something changes here,” he said quietly, his voice barely more than a whisper, carried softly upon the gentle breeze.Full novel: Help! “Not the light.

Not the waters.

Not the beauty.

But the way we see it all.

When I walked these shores alone…

they were fair.

They were wonderful.

But they were also…

quiet.

Empty.

Like a palace built for a king who never comes home.

Now…

now that you stand beside me…

everything shines.

Everything breathes.

Everything feels complete.”He turned toward me fully then, lifting both his hands to cup my face, holding me as though I were something infinitely precious — fragile, yet strong enough to hold his whole world together.”I used to think,” he continued, his eyes deep and luminous and filled with endless tenderness, “that eternity would be vast, and grand, and overwhelming.

I imagined mountains that touched the stars, and oceans without shore, and wonders that would take a lifetime merely to describe.

But standing here…

with you…

I realize the truth.

Eternity is not grand.

It is quiet.

It is gentle.

It is simply…

this.

Two souls who belong together, standing together, and knowing that they shall never again be parted.

That is all eternity truly is.”I covered his hands with my own, pressing them closer against my cheeks, feeling the warmth of his palms, the strength of his fingers, the steady, living pulse beneath his skin.”And it is enough,” I answered softly.

“More than enough.

All the wonders in all the worlds could not compare to this.

To your voice.

To your touch.

To the certainty that when I open my eyes…

you will be there.

That is all I have ever truly wanted.

That is all I shall ever need.”Lucian leaned forward and rested his forehead gently against mine, closing his eyes as if to seal my words deep within his heart where no shadow could ever reach them.

He breathed slowly, deeply, and for a moment there was no sound at all — no wave, no wind, no song — only the beating of two hearts, slow and steady and perfectly in tune.”Then let us rest here a little longer,” he murmured at last, his lips brushing softly against mine as he spoke.

“Let us stay in this moment.

Let us keep it safe.

For it is the first of all our eternal days.

And I should like to remember it…

exactly as it is.”So we stayed.

We sat together upon the warm, smooth stones at the water’s edge, and Lucian drew me close so I leaned against his chest, and we watched the light drift gently across the endless sea — shifting from gold to pearl to soft rose, and back again, never fading, never darkening, always warm and always kind.

He spoke to me quietly of little things — of how the water felt beneath his feet the first time he stood here, of how he had once whispered my name into the waves and felt them answer him, of how he had always known, even then, that one day he would bring me here. And as he spoke, I realized something beautiful: the greatest wonders of this place were not the shining waters, not the endless light, not the beauty that stretched on forever.

They were the quiet things.

The way his voice softened when he spoke my name.

The way his hand sought mine without hesitation, without fear, without doubt.

The way he looked at me — not as a prize won, not as a destiny fulfilled, but simply as me.

As the one he loved.

As the one he would choose, over and over again, forever. When at last the light shifted and a soft, radiant glow began to spread across the farthest reaches of the sea, Lucian stood and drew me gently to my feet.

He did not pull me away.

He did not hurry.

He simply stood before me, brushing the hair back from my face, his expression calm and bright and filled with gentle purpose.”There is one more thing I should like to show you,” he said softly.

“It is not far.

And it is…

perhaps the dearest place in all this land to my heart.

Will you walk with me?””Always,” I answered without hesitation, lacing my fingers through his and holding fast.

“Anywhere.

Everywhere.

With you.”We turned away from the cove and walked back along the shore, moving gently beneath the endless, glowing sky.

The path curved inland, winding through soft, grassy slopes where wild flowers bloomed in scattered clusters — star-shaped and radiant, glowing faintly as we passed.

The ground beneath our feet was soft and springy, scented with fresh grass and warm sunlight, and the air remained sweet and clear and perfectly still.Lucian walked beside me, his hand never loosening its hold, his steps sure and slow.

He did not speak much along the way, save to point out a cluster of flowers or a glint of light upon a distant hill, but his gaze turned often toward me — watching, waiting, hoping — as if he wondered whether I would love this place too, this place he had kept safe and secret and dear, waiting all this while just for me.After a time, we came over a gentle rise — and there, below us, lay a small, sheltered valley, cupped softly between green and glowing hills.

It was not vast like the sea, not grand like the waterfall.

It was small, and quiet, and perfectly formed.

In its center stood a single white cottage, low and graceful, with wide windows that caught the light and a porch that wrapped gently around its sides.

Before it lay a garden filled with flowers of every hue, blooming thick and sweet, and behind it rose trees whose leaves shimmered with soft, living green.

And above it all, the sky curved down gentle and warm, wrapping the little valley in endless, golden peace.Lucian stopped beside me, his breath catching softly in his throat, and spoke with a quiet, trembling reverence.”I built it,” he said.

“With my own hands.

Stone by stone.

Beam by beam.

Through all the long years of waiting…

I built it.

I planted every flower.

I tended every tree.

I laid every path.

And every stroke of the hammer…

every stone I set…

every seed I sowed…

I did it for you.

I imagined you walking here.

I imagined you sitting upon that porch.

I imagined you standing in that doorway, looking out upon this valley…

and smiling.

And that thought…

that hope…

kept me going.

Through every lonely day.

Through every silent night.”He turned to me then, his eyes bright and glistening, his face radiant with a love too great for words.”It is small,” he whispered, as if afraid I might find it wanting.

“It is simple.

But it is ours.

And it was made…

entirely of love.”My heart swelled so fully I could scarcely breathe.

I looked down at the little white house, at the paths laid with care, at the garden blooming in every corner — all of it built, all of it tended, all of it loved…

while he waited for me.

And I turned to him, to the man who had given centuries of his life to build a home for the one he had not yet met, and tears of pure, overwhelming joy spilled over and ran down my cheeks.”It is the most beautiful place I have ever seen,” I said, my voice trembling with happiness.

“Not because of the stones, or the flowers, or the light.

But because it was built by you.

Because it was built for us.

There is no palace in all the worlds…

that could ever mean half so much to me as this.”Lucian’s face lit up then — brighter than the flowers, brighter than the light, brighter than all the stars that ever shone.

He squeezed my hand tight, lifted it to his lips, and kissed it with a joy so pure it seemed to lift the very air around us.”Then come,” he said, his voice filled with gladness.

“Let us go down.

Let us step through that doorway.

Together.

At long last.”Hand in hand, we walked down the gentle slope — toward the little white house, toward the blooming garden, toward the home that love had built and patience had kept safe until the appointed day.

And as we walked, beneath the endless, glowing sky, I knew with absolute certainty: whatever lay within those walls, whatever days we would spend there, whatever joys we would share within that quiet, sheltered valley…

nothing would ever be more precious than this — walking hand in hand, with the one who had crossed eternity just to bring me home.
