The days that followed unfolded in the same gentle, unyielding pattern, as if written long ago in the stars.

Every morning, as I stepped out toward work, he was already there.

Waiting calmly, fully patient, as though nothing else in the entire world mattered more than seeing me appear.Full novel: Help! This Foreigner Won’t Stop Trying To Marry Me — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Some days he brought flowers — fresh roses, sweet-scented jasmine, or other blooms I could not name but whose beauty was undeniable.

On others, he came bearing only a soft smile and a warm greeting, as if his presence alone were gift enough. At first I tried to keep my distance.

I walked faster, kept my eyes lowered, hoping he would tire and leave.

But Lucian never pushed.

He did not draw near if I kept my space.

He did not demand conversation if I chose silence.

He simply stood there — steady, calm, unshaken — and let me decide how close I wished to come.

When I walked away, he did not follow.

When I looked back, he remained exactly where he stood, watching me with a gaze that made my chest feel both warm and tight.Slowly, my defenses began to soften.

Not for any logical reason — I still did not know who he was, where he came from, or why he felt so certain about me — but because of his gentle, unwavering persistence.

He never grew angry when I refused his flowers.

He never took offense when I replied briefly or kept my tone cool.

He merely smiled, patient and understanding, as though he already knew every part of me — even the hidden parts, the parts I had never dared show anyone.”I will not leave,” he said one morning, as I stood a few paces away, clutching my bag and watching him with doubt.

Sunlight caught the dark of his hair, making his features appear both strong and soft.

“I know you are afraid.

I know all of this feels strange and impossible to understand.

But I ask only one thing: give me time.

Let me prove my intentions are true.

I will never hurt you, Elian.

I promise.”I studied him for a long moment, searching for any hint of deceit, any trace of hidden motive — anything that might give me reason to turn away completely.

But in his eyes there was only deep sincerity, unshakable certainty, and a tenderness that made my heart race.

He looked so honest, so utterly in earnest, that I nearly forgot we were strangers.

That we had met only days before.”You do not know me,” I repeated, the same words I had spoken each day, though my voice lacked its former firmness.

“You know nothing about me.

How can you be so sure?”Lucian took one step forward, then paused at once, as though remembering the space I always kept.

He did not touch me.

He simply met my gaze, looking as though he could see straight into the depths of my soul.”I know your heart,” he replied gently, yet with a conviction that shook my resolve.

“I know the kindness you keep hidden behind your hesitation.

I know the peace you seek, and the softness you rarely dare let show.

Some things need no explanation in words, Elian.

Things the soul recognizes, even before the mind understands.”It sounded impossible — too beautiful to be true.

Yet in that moment, meeting his dark, sincere eyes, I almost believed him.

I almost wished to set aside every doubt and let myself drift toward the certainty he offered.

But reason still held its ground.”You speak as though we have known each other all our lives,” I murmured, looking away to the pavement beneath my feet.

“When we have only just met.

This is madness, Lucian.

None of this is real.””Perhaps it seems that way,” he acknowledged softly.

He did not argue, did not grow defensive.

“Yet some things are set long before we are born.

All I ask is this: believe.

Not all at once.

Not today.

Believe slowly, little by little, as time passes.

Let me prove it to you.”I fell silent, no answer ready.

On one hand, every word he spoke seemed to settle deep within me, as though he knew truths even I had not fully realized.

On the other, logic kept shouting that this was not how things happened.

That someone did not appear from nowhere, act as though you were destined, and know your heart without ever truly knowing you.Yet day after day passed, and I grew accustomed to his presence.

Accustomed to seeing him waiting each morning.

Accustomed to the sound of his voice greeting me gently.

Accustomed to the way he looked at me as though I were the most precious thing he had ever seen.

Sometimes I paused and spoke with him a little while.

Sometimes I accepted his flowers — and each time I did, his face lit with such happiness that it felt as though I had given him something beyond price. He never pressed too hard.

Never demanded to know private details of my life.

He simply listened whenever I spoke, remembering small things I had mentioned in passing — my favorite food, the colors I liked, what frightened me or what I disliked.

Things I often forgot myself, yet he held clearly in mind as though they mattered most. One afternoon, rain fell suddenly and heavily as I prepared to leave work.

I stood beneath the building’s overhang, watching the sky darken and water pour down, hesitating to step out.

Before I could decide to wait it out, an umbrella opened above my head.

Startled, I turned — and there stood Lucian, gazing at me with that same soft smile.”It is raining quite hard,” he said gently, tilting the umbrella so it covered me entirely, even as his own shoulder began to catch the rain.

“Allow me to walk you home.

I will not come inside.

I only wish to ensure you arrive safely.”I looked at him.

His hair was damp at the edges, yet his eyes remained warm and attentive.

He seemed unconcerned by getting wet, so long as I stayed dry and safe.

Something in my chest softened.

There was no hidden agenda in his actions.

No demand in his kindness.

Only care.”You are getting wet,” I said quietly, my hand lifting as though to brush damp hair from his forehead — then falling back to my side, held back by hesitation.”It does not matter,” he replied simply, his smile warming.

“So long as you remain unharmed, that is enough for me.”We walked side by side toward my home.

Rain poured all around us, yet beneath the umbrella it felt warm and still.

We spoke little.

The silence between us carried no awkwardness — instead, it felt familiar, comforting, as though we had walked this way together many times before, in some other life.

Glancing at him now and then, I noticed he kept shifting the umbrella toward me, letting his own shoulder soak through, without seeming to realize he did it.When we reached my door, I stopped and turned to him.

He closed the umbrella and stood there, calm and steady, damp hair neatly combed back.”Thank you,” I said sincerely, my voice soft but clear above the drumming rain.

“You… you need not have done this.””I know,” he answered gently.

“Yet I wished to.

To care for you, to keep you safe… that is already part of who I am, Elian.

Even before I found you.”He paused, gazing at me with such depth that my breath caught.”Go inside,” he said softly, smiling.

“Change into dry clothing so you do not fall ill.

And do not worry for me.

I shall remain here until your light comes on.

Until I know you are safe within.””It is still pouring,” I said, unable to believe it.

“You will be soaked through.””It does not matter,” he repeated, his smile unwavering.

“I will not leave until I know you are safe.”I studied him, my chest swelling with something warm and unfamiliar.

He meant it.

He truly would stand out in the rain, only to be certain I was all right.

Expecting nothing in return.”Why?” I whispered, my voice nearly lost beneath the rain.

“Why do you do all this, Lucian?

What is it you seek from me?”Lucian drew one step closer — near enough that I could see him clearly, yet careful to leave me space to feel safe.

His expression softened, sincere and steady.”I seek nothing from you, Elian,” he said gently, yet firmly.

“I seek only you.

As you are.

With every strength and every flaw.

With every doubt and fear.

I do not ask you to change.

I do not ask you to become someone else.

I ask only that you give me a chance to know you.

To stand beside you.

That is all.”My heart raced.

I stood still, unable to speak.

No one had ever spoken to me this way.

No one had ever looked at me as though I were rare and worth waiting for.

My breath caught, and I realized with quiet startling clarity: I was beginning to trust him.

Slowly, against every logical warning — I was beginning to believe he might be right.”Go inside,” he whispered again, as though afraid to break the hush around us.

“Do not worry.

I shall be here.”I nodded slowly, turning toward the door with steps that felt heavy.

I stepped inside, closed the door gently, and stood pressed against it for a moment, holding my breath.

After a while I went to the upstairs window and looked out.Lucian remained exactly where he had stood.

Beneath the pouring rain.

Looking up toward my window.

His clothing darkened by water, yet he stood upright, unshaken.

Prepared to wait all night, through every drop, until he knew I was safe.My heart ached and warmed all at once.

He had not left.

He had kept his word.

I stood there watching him for a long time — and then, slowly, something shifted within me.

I reached out and turned on my lamp.Below, in the rain, he lifted his face toward my light.

A soft, quiet smile touched his lips.

He gave one small, gentle wave — then turned and walked away, disappearing into the gray veil of rain.I stayed at the window long after he was gone.

The rain still fell outside, yet inside I felt warm — warmed by his care, his sincerity, and something new beginning to take root.

Something I could no longer deny.

Something that, little by little, was starting to feel like hope.
