The garden widened and opened out as we walked deeper, the flower beds drawing back to make way for soft green banks and smooth, sloping grass, until presently we came upon a stream — clear, sparkling, and wonderfully calm — winding gently through the heart of the bloom.
Its waters were so perfectly transparent I could see every smooth, rounded stone and glowing, coloured pebble lying peacefully at the bottom, resting undisturbed beneath the gentle flow.
It moved without haste, without noise, without hurry — gliding soft and steady onward, as if it knew exactly where it was going and held all the time in the world to arrive there.
Soft, velvety moss lined its banks, deep and cool and green, while flowers of every hue leaned down from the grassy edges to brush the surface with their petals, their reflections dancing gently in the clear, glowing current, swaying and rippling and returning to stillness as the water flowed past.Lucian stopped at the water’s edge and stood quietly for a long moment, watching the stream glide softly by, his gaze resting upon the flowing surface with an expression tender and thoughtful, as if he saw within it something more than water — something that spoke straight to his heart.
Then he turned to face me, his gaze warm and deep and filled with quiet, beautiful meaning.”This stream reminds me of us,” he said softly, his voice matching the gentle rhythm of the flow beside us.
“See how it moves?
Not rushing.
Not forcing.
Not restless or wild or hurried.
Simply…
flowing onward.
Gentle yet constant.
Quiet yet sure.
Calm yet endlessly alive.
And that is how I hope our love shall be — like this stream.
Calm.
Steady.
Always moving forward, yet never in haste.
Always growing deeper as it goes, yet never turbulent or clouded.
Always clear, always true, always carrying life and refreshment and joy wherever it flows.”He gestured toward the water, where soft ripples caught the golden light and scattered tiny, dancing rainbows across the surface, shifting and shimmering and fading only to appear again, bright and new.”It does not run dry,” he continued, his voice steady and sure, as if he spoke of something he had watched and known and trusted for ages.
“It does not grow muddy or dark.
It does not freeze beneath bitter cold or shrink and fade beneath burning heat.
For it comes from an endless source — the great, living sea above the falls, the same pure, eternal spring from which all life and light and beauty here flows.
And so it is with us.
Our love does not spring from fleeting feeling alone, or from changing days, or from anything that time might touch.
It comes from something endless.
Something eternal.
Something that existed long before we ever met and will remain long after all else has faded away.
And because its source is endless…
it will never run dry.
It will never fail.
It will never cease.”He turned fully toward me then, stepping close until we stood face to face, and took both my hands in his — holding them gently yet firmly, his grip warm and steady, a quiet promise in the way his fingers wrapped around mine.”I shall be like this stream for you,” he promised, his voice clear and steady and true, ringing soft and sure above the quiet flow.
“I shall flow beside you, always at your side, never parting, never straying far.
I shall carry you forward when the way grows steep or long.
I shall refresh you when you are weary, and calm you when you are troubled.
I shall be clear and open and true, always — so that you may always see straight to the very bottom of my heart, and find nothing there but you.
And wherever life leads us — through soft meadows or through narrow ways, through quiet days or through times we do not yet know — I shall flow with you.
Side by side.
Step by step.
Hand in hand.
Forever.”I looked down at the water — clear, gentle, endless, flowing onward without end — and then lifted my eyes to him.
To the man whose love was exactly like that stream: constant, pure, endlessly giving, faithful and calm and sure.
And my heart swelled within me, rising and overflowing with a love so deep and full it felt as though it too might flow on forever, widening and deepening and carrying life and joy wherever it went.
I squeezed his hands gently in mine, and spoke soft and clear, from the very depth of my soul.”And I shall be the banks that guide you,” I answered softly.
“The ground that holds you.
The peace that gives you shape and strength and gentle way.
I shall hold you safe and keep you sure, never letting you stray too far, never letting you wander lost.
Wherever you flow…
I shall be there.
Whatever way you turn…
I shall turn with you.
Whatever carries you forward…
I shall flow with you.
One stream.
One current.
One journey.
One heart beating beneath the sky.
Forever.”Lucian smiled then — bright, radiant, and happier than I had ever seen him.
His face lit up with pure, unshadowed joy, light shining from his eyes and glowing in his smile, as if my words had fulfilled something he had scarcely dared to hope.
He stepped closer still and wrapped his arms around me, holding me firm and safe against his chest, and together we stood beside the quiet stream — hand in hand, heart to heart — watching it flow gently onward, reflecting the golden light, carrying fallen blossoms soft upon its surface, winding its peaceful way through the garden that love had built.
And as we stood there, breathing the sweet air, listening to the soft, endless murmur of the water…
I knew with absolute, unshakable certainty.
Our journey would be just like that stream.
Beautiful.
Peaceful.
Endless.
And always…
together.
