Rowan’s POV

“They’re already whispering.”

The words follow me down the corridor like claws scraping stone.Full novel: Her Alphas, Her Throne — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

I don’t turn.

I don’t need to.

I can smell it in the air—fear, sharp and sour, mixed with awe.

Wolves pulling back as I pass.

Heads lowering.

Bodies shifting out of my way.

Not for me.

For her.

Jessica’s presence lingers everywhere now, like heat after fire.

The ring is empty, but the ground still feels wrong under my boots, like it remembers her voice.

Stand down.

My wolf shudders at the memory.

No shame.

Not anger.

Hunger.

I clench my jaw and keep walking.

The council chamber doors are open.

Too open.

That alone tells me this is no meeting—it’s a warning.

Jessica stands at the center of the room.

She isn’t bound.

She isn’t kneeling.

That scares them more than chains ever could.

Her arms are crossed tight over her chest, like she’s holding herself together by force alone.

Charles is a step behind her, not touching, but close enough that his heat brushes her back.

Jude leans against the far wall, eyes sharp, watchful, already counting exits.

The elders sit in a half-circle, faces carved from stone.

Marr speaks first.

“You commanded a warrior.”

Jessica lifts her chin.

“I spoke.”

“And he obeyed.”

“I didn’t ask him to kneel.”

“You didn’t have to.”

Silence stretches.

Thick.

Heavy.

I step forward before I can stop myself.

“She didn’t know,” I say.

Every eye snaps to me.

“It wasn’t planned.

It wasn’t cruel.”

Marr looks pleased.

“You defend her.”

“I state the truth.”

Jessica turns slightly, eyes meeting mine.

There’s something there—fear, yes, but also something darker.

Something that didn’t exist yesterday.

Curiosity.

“Rowan,” she says softly.

“What did it feel like?”

My throat tightens.

On the way my wolf bowed, not out of weakness but recognition.

“It felt,” I say slowly, “like the world finally made sense.”

A murmur runs through the elders.

“That,” Marr says, “is exactly the problem.”

One of the younger elders leans forward.

“Packs are reacting already.

Omegas won’t meet her eyes.

Warriors hesitate to challenge her.

Even unmated wolves are restless.”

“Because they feel her,” Jude says flatly.

“And they don’t like being reminded of what real power feels like.”

Jessica exhales hard.

“I don’t want fear.”

Marr tilts his head.

“Fear is respect’s older brother.”

“No,” she snaps.

“Fear is control.”

Charles moves then, finally placing a hand on her hip.

The contact is small, but it changes the room.

Her breath stutters.

His scent deepens, dark and sharp.

“You don’t have to decide what it is yet,” he murmurs.

“Just don’t let them name it for you.”

Marr’s eyes flick to Charles.

“Careful, Alpha.

You are already losing ground.”

Charles smiles without warmth.

“I know.”

The words land heavy.

Jessica pulls away from him, just enough to stand alone.

That might be the bravest thing I’ve seen her do.

“I won’t be hidden,” she says.

“I won’t be bound.

And I won’t be turned into a story you tell to scare children into obedience.”

Her voice doesn’t shake.

Something in the chamber presses back.

I feel it again—that weight, that pull.

My knees soften, just for a second.

Around me, others shift, uneasy.

One warrior drops to a knee without realizing it.

Jessica gasps, hands clenching.

“Stop,” she whispers.

“I said stop.”

The pressure snaps.

She stumbles.

Charles catches her this time, arms firm, protective.

She doesn’t fight it.

Her body melts into his for half a breath too long.

The room sees it.

Fear sharpens into something else.

Jealousy.

Desire.

Threat.

Marr rises slowly.

“You see?” he says softly.

“Even now, you pull us apart.”

Jessica looks up, eyes bright with unshed tears.

“Maybe you were already broken.”

A crack of anger flashes across Marr’s face.

“Enough,” he says. New chapters come out on g.com first.

“From this moment on, she is restricted.”

“No,” Jude says.

“Yes,” Charles says at the same time.

Everyone freezes.

Charles turns to Jude.

“She stays close.

To me.

To us.

Until we know what she is becoming.”

Jessica stiffens.

“I don’t belong to anyone.”

Charles meets her gaze.

“I know.”

That answer doesn’t calm her.

It shouldn’t.

Marr nods slowly.

“Very well.

But understand this—fear spreads faster than loyalty.

And wolves fear that they cannot kneel.”

He looks at her one last time.

“They will test you.”

The elders file out.

The doors slam shut.

Jessica sags, breath coming fast.

“I didn’t mean to do it again,” she says.

“I felt it rising and I panicked.”

Jude pushes off the wall.

“You didn’t panic,” he says gently.

“You reacted.”

“That’s worse,” she whispers.

I step closer, careful, like approaching a storm.

“They’re scared,” I tell her.

“Not because you hurt anyone.

Because you could.”

Her eyes lift to mine.

“And you?”

I don’t hesitate.

“I’m not scared of you.”

She searches my face.

“Then what are you scared of?”

I think of the way my wolf bowed.

Of the way, part of me liked it.

“I’m scared of how easy it was to obey.”

Her breath catches.

Outside, a horn sounds.

Low.

Warning.

Jude turns toward the window.

“Pack’s splitting,” he says.

“Already.”

Charles swears under his breath.

“That was fast.”

Jessica straightens, wiping her face.

When she looks up again, something has settled behind her eyes.

Not fear.

Resolve.

“Then let them,” she says quietly.

“If they’re going to fear me anyway… I won’t beg them not to.”

The floor hums.

My wolf lowers his head again.

And this time, I won’t fight it.
