The morning air outside the suburban estate was crisp, carrying the soft fragrance of blooming star-tulips from the garden—a garden Rhys spent hours tending to keep his mind off the dull ringing in his chest. "Won't ever get used to this pain, no matter how many years have passed", he sighed.

Lyra paused at the door, her figure clad in her usual hero attire: a light gleaming armor set that caught the early morning sunlight. She looked like a painting of divine judgment—tall, radiant, and commanding, with skin that had a subtle, celestial shimmer with midnight-blue hair cascading over her pauldrons.

“I am so sorry to leave you with the morning chores again, honey,” Lira murmured, leaning down to press a soft kiss to Rhys’s lips. Her touch was warm and infused with the quiet reverence that had defined their marriage since the day they exchanged vows. “The Apex Spire just issued an Omega-level alert. “Go save the world, honey,” Rhys replied with a gentle smile, cupping her cheek. “I’ll have dinner waiting when you get back.”

“You are my anchor, Rhys, really” she whispered against his mouth before stepping back.

With a silent flex of her gravity-manipulating aura, Lira lifted off the porch deck and launched into the clear blue sky. A fraction of a second later, a loud sonic boom rattled the double-pane glass windows of their home, announcing her supersonic departure toward the floating crystalline skyscraper in the distance. "hate to see her go, but love to watch her leave", Rhys mumbled, as he watched Lira soar.

The house Rhys had sacrificed his former superhero glory, his own vitality, and every last cent of his hero retirement earnings to buy fell into a dead silence.

Before the faint trail in the sky could even dissipate, the heavy quiet was shattered by a buzz against Rhys’s thigh. He pulled out his phone.

Vespera: Outside. Five minutes. Wear something tight, darling.

Rhys’s grip tightened around the glass screen until his knuckles turned white. The warmth in his chest turned to ice. "Well...Shit."

Rhys made his way out into the day light.

The arts district was thriving, drenched in midday sunlight and humming with the chatter of high-status shoppers sitting beneath lavish umbrellas.

Sitting at a prime spot at an upscale bistro, Vespera Vane leaned back in her chair, raw authority rolling off of her. She was stunning, in the same predatory, dangerous way of a wild cat—sporting a sharp, silver-white pixie cut that framed pointed, elf-like cat ears. Her slitted amber eyes tracked Rhys’s approach, while a long, leopard-spotted tail swayed lazily under her silk dress, swishing against the outdoor decking with a soft, rhythmic thump.

“Sit, hero,” she purred as Rhys approached, her voice smooth like warm honey poured over broken glass. "You're lucky I'm so kind to wait so long."

Rhys sat down his back rigid. “Vespera, this is insane. We’re in the middle of the arts district. Someone could recognize me, or worse, see us together.”

“Let them look,” Vespera chuckled, her pointed ears twitching in amusement. Underneath the table cloth, her leopard-spotted tail slithered forward, curling tightly around Rhys’s ankle—a cold reminder of the invisible chains wrapping around his life.

A waiter arrived moments later, setting down a crystal plate filled with plump strawberries dipped in rich dark chocolate. Vespera didn’t look at the waiter; her slitted amber gaze remained locked onto Rhys."...well. enjoy then." he said, slightly annoyed at being brushed off.

“Feed me, hero,” she instructed lazily, leaning back into her chair and arching a silver eyebrow. "I'm just oh-so tired after waiting for what felt like forever."

Rhys felt a match of fire ignite in his stomach. "I used to trade blows with galactic conquerors and hold planetary rifts together", he screamed silently behind his stone-faced mask. "And now I’m a puppet on a string for a dirty loan shark."

“Vespera, don’t do this here—”

“Feed. me. Rhys,” she repeated, her tone dropping into a dangerously low whisper that made the Contractual Bind sigils faintly flicker across her skin. “Or should I call my legal team right now and start the foreclosure process on that lovely suburban sanctuary you built for your little goddess?”

Gritting his teeth, Rhys picked up a chocolate-dipped strawberry with trembling fingers and held it toward her mouth.

Vespera didn’t just take a bite. Smiling slyly, she gripped his wrist, leaning across the small table. She leaned forward, taking the strawberry into her mouth, her soft lips brushing against his fingers before she slowly drew back, her slitted eyes fixed on his in triumph.

Rhys felt a cold sweat break out across his neck. The public degradation was excruciating. But what terrified him even more was the dark bodily betrayal happening inside his own nervous system.

His marriage with Lira was built on a deep, profound, respect—a pure bond. They had never done any kind of this shameless, performative display in public. The sudden sensory overload of Vespera’s bold touch and unapologetic stare sent an automatic spark of heat straight to his lower abdomen. "fuck me.."

His body was betraying his heart, and he hated himself for it.

and then came the neon flashing signs

The arts district faded into the shadowy outskirts of the lower quarter. Vespera dragged Rhys toward a flashy three-story building fitted with flashing pink and violet neon signs advertising hourly rates.

A “Love Hotel”.

As they stepped through the glass doors, a wall of cheap cleansers and warm musk washed over Rhys. The trap was closing in on him like a vice. His heroic instincts—honed over a decade of combat—screamed at him to break free, to take the risk, to lose the house, to bet everything just to escape this nightmare.

Rhys stopped dead at the door of the lobby, ripping his wrist out of her grasp.

“Vespera, no,” Rhys growled, his voice raspy with fury. “This wasn’t the deal. I am not going in there.”

Vespera paused, turning slowly. Her pointed cat-elf ears twitched backward, listening to the hammering of his heart. A wicked smirk spread across her face. "oh, is that so?"

She stepped close—so close Rhys could feel the intense heat radiating from her body. Before he could step back, Vespera slid her hand smoothly down his chest, moving past his belt, and firmly cupped his groin through his pants.

Rhys gasped, freezing in place as her grip tightened, unyielding.

“The deal is ‘love’ on my terms, Rhys,” Vespera whispered against his lips, her breath sweet. “Or do you want your precious little goddess to come home to a foreclosure sign nailed to your front door? You already know what you have to choose.”

Without giving him a chance to respond, Vespera pulled him into a deep commanding kiss right in the center of the lobby. Her sleek tail wrapped tightly around his thigh, anchoring him to her.

Behind the counter, a young receptionist holding a stack of room keys froze mid-motion."Welcome in, ho- Oh Jeez!", the young boy turned a shade of red that rivaled the flashing neon signs outside, his eyes wide as he stared. "H-how can I help you today?"

Vespera broke the kiss with a satisfied pop, looking over at the wide-eyed receptionist with an amusing smirk.

“Room 404,” Vespera purred, tossing a black credit card onto the counter. “And don’t disturb us.”
