The heavy oak door of Room 404 barely clicked shut before the reality of the room came crashing in on Rhys. The air inside was thick with the smell of jasmine and the copper tang of static—a side effect of the high-frequency magical wards humming through the walls. Vespera did not believe in waiting. The moment the lock slid into place, her predator instincts took control.

“Ahh..Hey! This isn't right Vespera,” Rhys choked out, his voice carrying the raw desperation of a man watching his entire life erode in real-time."We need to stop this here"

With a low purr, Vespera closed the distance between them. Her hands, tipped with immaculately manicured claws, dug sharp into the collar of his shirt. With a fluid flex of feline strength, she ripped the fabric down the middle, sending buttons bouncing across the floor like plastic rain.Full novel: Hero’s Debt: The Superhero House Husband — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

“You are evil for doing this, Vespera,” Rhys spat, his hands coming up to push her away. "I Knew you were twisted from the very moment we met."

Vespera only laughed, her head tilting back as her long tail whipped behind her in a hypnotic rhythm.

“Evil? Please, darling. I’m just an opportunist,” she whispered, her amber, slitted eyes locking onto his with sheer dominance. “I’ve wanted you from the very second your hand touched the pen to sign the deed to that house. And Vespera Vane always gets what she wants.”

Rhys gritted his teeth, desperately trying to summon even a fraction of the power that had once made him a legend. He reached deep inside his chest, searching for the familiar hum of his reserves, trying to stand his ground, rip the chains away, to force her back.

But there was nothing. His burned-out ability—scarred permanently from the day he absorbed a world-ending impact of a dying star—refused to answer. Instead of the strength he needed to fill his veins, he felt only a dull, aching heat flare through his chest, leaving him physically helpless.

Yet, the betrayal of his own body was raw. The aggressive, shameless nature of her touch, the sheer, taboo thrill of her domination, and the primal heat radiating from her curvy form sent a rush of blood straight to his crotch. He was entirely, visibly aroused, and he hated himself for it.

As she pressed her body flush against his, his final, silent thought was a desperate, pleading apology to the radiant woman currently flying high above the skies: I love you, Lira.

the rising sun peeked through the curtains.

Rhys lay perfectly still on the tangled bedsheets hours later, staring blankly up at the water-stained ceiling tiles as the quiet of dawn settled over the room like a shroud.

“What have I done?” he whispered, the words tasting like ash in his mouth. The crushing weight of what he had just participated in—the ultimate betrayal of the woman who held his heart—pressed down on his chest so heavily he could barely draw a clean breath.

Beside him, Vespera sat up with effortless grace. With a lazy flick of her wrist, a tiny, glittering spark of her violet magic flared from her fingertip, lighting a long, slender clove cigarette. She took a deep drag and exhaled a thick cloud of sweet scented smoke that hung in the morning air.

Panic suddenly seized Rhys as he glanced at the glowing red numbers of the bedside alarm clock. The sun was already up. Lira’s late briefing at the Apex Spire would be wrapping up soon. She would be flying back home, expecting to find her husband waiting with hot coffee and a warm smile. "I got to get the hell out of here!", he panicked, "Like 5-hours-ago-NOW!"

Rhys scrambled out of bed, his muscles aching with a deep, hollow fatigue as he desperately tried to assemble his ruined, buttonless clothing.

“You got what you wanted,” Rhys spat, his hands trembling as he pulled his torn shirt over his chest, his voice vibrating with a volatile mix of fury and intense self-loathing. “It’s over. The rules of the contract have been satisfied. The house is ours now.”

Vespera slowly turned her head, her slitted eyes gleaming through the haze of the purple smoke. A slow, wicked grin spread across her face, her tail flicking lazily against the sheets.

“Over? Oh, sweetie. We’ve barely even started,” she purred, leaning forward so the smell of her magical smoke washed over him. “Isn’t that right... Omen?”

Rhys froze, a cold dread instantly locking his limbs up. No need for her chains this time. His breath tightened in his throat like a knot.

Omen. The name felt like a physical blow. It was his old hero alias—a classified secret buried deep beneath layers of planetary security clearances, cosmic non-disclosure agreements, and a completely scrubbed civilian identity designed to keep him and Lira safe from a galaxy of vengeful enemies.

She knew. The Half-Tabaxi loan shark hadn’t just trapped him in a predatory real estate scheme; she had uncovered his deepest, most dangerous secret. And as she sat there, smiling through the smoke, Rhys realized with horrifying clarity that the blackmail went so much deeper than just their dream home. He was her puppet now, and she had no intention of ever letting go of the strings.
