The small service hatch in the partition slid open all the way, and the driver politely passed the warm, aromatic box of artisan honey pastries and the two cups of coffee into the back seat before sliding it shut again.
Vespera opened the box, the sweet scent of glazed sugar and cinnamon filling the cabin. She pulled out a warm, sticky pastry, took a delicate, delighted bite, and leaned back against the plush leather. She looked down at Rhys, who was still sitting on the floorboard, leaning his head against the seat edge, completely spent and thoroughly humiliated.
A bright, joking, entirely unbothered smile lit up her face as she gestured to the pastry box.
“Mmm... perfection,” Vespera cooed, chewing softly before flashing him a sharp, white grin. “All that hard work made me absolutely famished, hero. Want a bite?”
Rhys pulled himself up off the carpeted floorboard of the sedan, his chest heaving with a chaotic blend of suppressed rage and intense, lingering physical stimulation. His jaw was clenched so hard his molars ached, his eyes burning with silent fury as he smoothed out his clothes and adjusted his collar.
Vespera, entirely unbothered by his glare, shifted lazily across the leather seat. She leaned into his side, nestling her head affectionately against his shoulder as if they were nothing more than a devoted couple taking a weekend stroll. Her spotted tail curled gently around his calf, its rhythmic swish humming with dark contentment.
“I have to admit, hero,” she purred softly, her slitted amber eyes glowing with affectionate amusement as she lightly smoothed down his tousled dark hair, “I’ve always wondered how the legendary Omen would handle... a delicate situation like that. You certainly exceeded my expectations.”
Rhys’s voice came out as a low, dangerous rasp. “You are insane. Absolutely out of your mind.”
“Oh, hush,” she cooed, breaking off a warm piece of the glazed pastry from the drive-thru. She raised the sweet, honey-drenched pastry to his lips, nudging his mouth teasingly. “Eat. You worked hard back there, and we still have one more stop to make. We’ve got the food, the pastries, and the groceries... now we just need the final touches.”
Rhys stared at the pastry, then at her face. The sheer absurdity of her behavior was maddening. She wasn’t acting like a cruel, extortionist loan shark demanding her tribute; she was acting like a sweet, attentive, doting partner running weekend errands with her husband. It was a bizarre, macabre pantomime of domestic intimacy that twisted his stomach into knots. Baffled and thoroughly exhausted, Rhys begrudgingly took the bite, chewing in sullen silence while Vespera smiled warmly, dabbing a speck of glaze from his lip with her thumb.
The rest of the drive was a surreal nightmare of twisted romance. Vespera chatted casually about neighborhood gossip, fed him bits of fruit from the grocery tote, and routinely leaned up to press soft, lingering kisses to his cheek and neck. Rhys sat stiffly beside her, feeling like a passenger in a runaway train, completely unable to reconcile the sweet affection she was pouring over him with the horrifying extortion that bound them together.
The sedan finally executed a smooth turn and glided to a halt along a commercial strip. The stoic driver immediately stepped out and opened the heavy rear door.
When Rhys stepped out onto the sidewalk, his jaw dropped.
They were standing directly outside a high-end, discreetly shaded adult boutique—a well-known, sprawling establishment catering to exotic tastes, enchanted devices, and elite clientele.
“No,” Rhys said instantly, taking a step back, his eyes widening in pure horror. “No, Vespera. Absolutely not. I am not going in there with you.”
Vespera burst into a rich, melodious laugh, grabbing his wrist with an unyielding, magical grip that dragged him effortlessly toward the double glass doors. “Oh, please! Hero, you were just on your knees in the back of a luxury sedan in a fast-food drive-thru five minutes ago! A little shop floor isn’t going to kill you. Besides, this is just a quick pickup for a custom order.”
She pulled him through the entrance, and Rhys was instantly hit by the sheer, overwhelming scale of the establishment. The store was massive—dimly lit by warm ambient LED strips, smelling faintly of expensive leather, jasmine, and polished wood.
Rhys stood frozen in the center aisle, shocked into utter speechlessness. He took in the display cases and wall mounts, his face flushing a violent crimson. Half of the items on display were completely foreign to him—strange, arcane-looking contraptions fashioned from polished silver, pulsing crystals, and reinforced velvet. The other half he could vaguely identify, though he desperately wished he couldn’t. His eyes flicked frantically from enchanted silk bindings to complex, multi-tiered leather harnesses and glowing potion vials. Try as he might to look away, the sheer, bizarre novelty of the place held his gaze captive.
Vespera reveled in his squirming, helpless shock. She giggled softly, linking her arm through his and resting her head on his shoulder as she dragged him up to the grand glass counter at the back of the store.
A tall, fit clerk in his late twenties looked up from a terminal. He wore a crisp apron over a black shirt, exuding an easygoing, professional demeanor. “Good morning! Welcome to Velvet & Arcana. How can I help you two today?”
Vespera stepped forward with effortless, aristocratic grace. “Good morning. I’m picking up a private, custom order under the name Vane.” She slid a gold-embossed digital receipt across the glass counter.
The clerk scanned the receipt, his eyes widening slightly as the order details populated his screen. “Ah, yes! Miss Vane. One moment, please. I’ll fetch that from the secure vault in the back.”
As the clerk turned to leave, his eyes lingered on Rhys for a fraction of a second too long—a look of deep, curious intrigue passing over his face. Rhys shifted uncomfortably, pulling his shirt collar up slightly, dreading every second spent in the open air.
A couple of minutes later, the clerk returned carrying a medium-sized box. It was meticulously wrapped in pristine, matte-black paper, bound with a thick, crimson silk ribbon. He set it down gently on the glass counter.
“Here you go, Miss Vane. Everything has been double-checked and calibrated to your exact specifications,” the clerk said smoothly, running her card through the terminal.
As he handed over the receipt for Vespera to sign, the clerk finally seemed to gather his courage. He looked directly at Rhys, offering a warm, genuine, guy-to-guy smile that took Rhys completely off guard.
“Man... I gotta say,” the clerk began, his tone surprisingly humble and slightly embarrassed as he gestured vaguely between Rhys and Vespera. “I see a lot of people come through those doors every day, but you... you are a lucky guy. Seriously. Your lady is absolutely stunning. I wish I had half your luck.”
Rhys blinked, caught entirely off guard by the sincere compliment from another man. “Ah... well... thank you,” Rhys stammered softly, taking the compliment with a confused, humble nod, his instincts as a polite civilian kicking in before he could catch himself.
The clerk rubbed the back of his neck, chuckling sheepishly as he continued. “Honestly, it’s refreshing to see. We get a lot of married couples in here trying to spice things up, but you two just have this incredible, intense energy together. How long have you guys been married?”
The question hit Rhys like a slap in the face. Anger flared instantly in his chest. His eyes narrowed, and he opened his mouth to bark a sharp, definitive ‘We are NOT married,’ but before he could squeeze out a single syllable, Vespera cut him off smoothly.
She leaned heavily into Rhys’s side, wrapping both arms around his bicep, gazing up at him with eyes brimming with false, breathtaking devotion.
“Oh, it feels like an absolute lifetime!” Vespera cooed, her voice dripping with sweet, tragic romance as she lied through her teeth without a single tremor of hesitation. “Our marriage is built on deep, unrelenting passion. My husband here is just a little shy when we shop for our... private playtimes. But trust me, he takes wonderful care of me at home.”
The clerk beamed, looking entirely satisfied, as if he had just solved a beautiful, wholesome puzzle. “That’s awesome to hear. Truly. You two have a wonderful day, and enjoy your purchase!”
Vespera picked up the black-wrapped box, offered the clerk a radiant farewell smile, and pulled a fuming Rhys out of the store.
The moment the heavy glass doors closed behind them and they stepped back onto the sidewalk, Rhys snatched his arm away, his fury boiling over. “That was NOT okay, Vespera! Telling him we’re married?! Are you completely out of your mind?!”
Vespera merely chuckled, holding the pristine box under her arm as the driver opened the sedan’s door for them. “Oh, relax, hero! What’s the harm? It’s a random clerk in a specialty shop; you’re never going to see him again.”
She slid into the cool leather backseat, pulling Rhys in right after her. As the doors shut, she turned, cupping his face in her hands and pulling him into another deep, soft kiss before he could unleash his rant. When she pulled back, her slitted amber eyes glittered with dark mischief. “Besides... you can’t deny we looked the part, darling. A handsome, brooding husband and his demanding, gorgeous wife.”
Rhys squeezed his eyes shut, taking a slow, deep breath, forcing his raging temper down into a tight, smoldering ball. He realized with bitter clarity that arguing with her in this mood was a battle he was fundamentally incapable of winning. He opened his eyes, glaring at the matte-black box sitting on the leather seat between them.
“What is in that box, Vespera?” Rhys asked, his tone deadpan, exhausted. “What did we just pick up?”
Vespera rested her hand over the black paper, her manicured claws lightly tapping the crimson ribbon. “Supplies for our final stop, of course,” she purred softly.
The sedan glided back into motion, merging seamlessly into the late-morning traffic. Rhys’s mind raced at a thousand miles an hour, analyzing every variable, trying to anticipate what terrifying spectacle she was orchestrating next. But Vespera gave him no clues. For the next fifteen minutes, she continued her unnerving act—behaving like a sweet, affectionate partner. She poured two small crystal glasses of chilled, high-end white wine from the sedan’s built-in bar, holding the glass to his lips, forcing him to sip with her. She rested her head on his chest, lightly kissing his chin, murmuring soft compliments about his strength and endurance.
“Cheer up, hero,” she whispered softly, her warm breath tickling his neck as the car slowed down. “We’re arriving at our final destination.”
The sedan turned into a familiar, quiet suburban avenue. Rhys looked out the tinted window, his brow furrowing as he recognized the immaculate, tree-lined street.
They were back in his own neighborhood.
