She hurried to Neville and examined him carefully.

The Levitation Charm should have taken most of the force out of the fall.

“Only light injuries.” She helped the bruised, tear-streaked boy to his feet.

The sight of him plunging straight down had still shaken her.

Light injuries or not, she insisted on taking him to the hospital wing at once.

“Stay exactly where you are until I return,” she ordered the remaining students.

“No one is to fly.

Is that clear?” She led Neville toward the castle.

The moment they were out of earshot the Slytherins began laughing.

Draco Malfoy’s voice carried farthest.

“Did you see the fat idiot fall?

I bet he never dares touch a broom again.” “That’s enough, Malfoy,” Harry said, stepping forward.

Draco only grinned wider.

“Merlin’s beard, Potter’s friends with the fat idiot!” “We are friends.

And don’t call him that.” Ivan frowned.

He had always known Malfoy was a spoiled child rather than genuinely vicious.

The next words, however, were aimed directly at him.

“Friends?

The same kind of friend who earns points and then drops the idiot out of the sky?” Ivan’s mouth twitched.

He stepped forward, rolled up his sleeve, and drove a clean fist into Malfoy’s face.

The boy hit the grass hard.

Spoiled brats really were the worst.

Malfoy scrambled up, clutching his reddening cheek.

“You hit me!

My father will have you expelled!” Ivan was unmoved.

Lucius Malfoy sat on the board of governors, but he could not expel a student on his own authority.

Dumbledore was unlikely to throw out one of Harry Potter’s friends over a single punch.

“Nice one, Ivan.” Ron was already rolling up his own sleeves.

He had been waiting for an excuse.

“Stop it!” Hermione’s voice cracked with panic.

“If Madam Hooch comes back and finds you fighting you’ll all be expelled!” Malfoy used the distraction.

He swung onto his broom, shot into the air, and held up a small glass ball.

“Look what I found.

The fat idiot’s Remembrall.

Where should I hide it?

A tree, maybe?

You’re his friends—come and get it!” “Malfoy!” Harry ignored Hermione’s protests and kicked off after him.

For a first flight his balance was remarkably steady.

Within seconds the two were circling each other overhead.

Ivan planted his own broom between his legs and copied Harry’s takeoff.

The broom refused to rise.

He shook the handle, then patted the shaft in frustration.

He had never even completed the first step of bonding with it.

Hermione planted herself in front of him, arms spread.

“Are you planning to break the rules too?” “No.” Ivan dropped the broom at once and shrugged.

“Harry can handle it.” Above them Harry was already dominating the exchange.

Hermione began to wonder whether he had somehow practised before arriving at Hogwarts.

Malfoy, seeing he was outmatched, hurled the Remembrall far across the grounds.

“Catch!” Harry banked hard, nearly clipped the castle wall, then dived after the falling glass.

Hermione screamed for him to stop.

Malfoy’s laughter died the instant Harry pulled up cleanly with the Remembrall in his hand.

None of them noticed the open window high above or the shocked face of Professor McGonagall watching every second.

Ron, still furious, yanked out his wand.

“We’ll teach him a lesson.

Petrificus Totalus!” In Charms class the same spell had once glued a toad’s back legs together for an entire lesson.

Today the wand produced only a puff of white smoke.

Malfoy, who had tensed for an incoming curse, burst out laughing.

Ron’s face went scarlet.

He looked ready to climb the air itself and jam the wand down Malfoy’s throat.

Ivan sighed.

A short rest had restored enough magic for one or two spells.

He turned to Hermione, who still looked slightly stunned by the rapid sequence of events.

“Hermione, you remember the Levitation Charm, right?” “Of course.” She nodded, confused.

“Good.” Ivan raised his wand.
