Killed five men in an alley.

Became a Hogwarts professor before the term even started.

He fell asleep smiling.

Teachers, it turned out, received the same long holidays as students—except they had to return earlier.

One month later Styx had walked nearly every corridor of the castle.

Hogwarts was larger than any film had suggested: eight main floors, three below ground.

In that time he had only managed the major classrooms, the Room of Requirement, the house-elf kitchens, and the library.

The month had been pleasant.

It had also left him with the persistent feeling that he had forgotten something important.

“Strange… what did I forget?

Should have bought a Remembrall.” One afternoon he was on his way to Hagrid’s hut when a familiar voice stopped him cold.

“Professor Styx.

You appear to have spent the last month in a state of considerable leisure.” He turned.

Professor McGonagall stood behind him, expression severe.

An old, familiar dread settled in his stomach—the same feeling a student gets when the teacher asks for the homework that was never done.

“Ah… Professor McGonagall.

Is there something you need?” “I distinctly remember informing you on your first day that a syllabus would be required.

Term begins very soon.

Have you selected textbooks?

Have you prepared your lesson plans?” “Lesson plans… ah.” The words collided with the last thirty days of wandering, library browsing, kitchen visits, and general idleness.

McGonagall’s face tightened.

“School begins in one month, Professor Styx.

Tell me you have at least begun.” In her eyes he looked exactly like every student who had ever tried to bluff their way through an unfinished assignment.

“Of course not—I mean, of course I have.

The plans are nearly finished.

As for textbooks, a practical class doesn’t really need them.” McGonagall studied him the way one studies a particularly unconvincing child.

“Very well.

I will take you at your word for the moment.

I expect those lesson plans on my desk by tomorrow afternoon.” Styx managed a smile.

“You will have them before term starts, Professor.

Was there anything else?” “Tomorrow afternoon.

And the day after tomorrow, professors will escort the Muggle-born students to Diagon Alley for supplies.

As a member of staff you will participate.” She handed him a folded list.

“These are your students and the procedures.

We leave first thing.” She strode away without waiting for a reply.

Dumbledore had, once again, handed every practical detail to McGonagall.

The Deputy Headmistress kept Hogwarts from collapsing under the weight of its own Headmaster.

Styx watched her go, then sighed.

“Hagrid will have to wait.

One night.

One set of plans.

One miracle.” At four in the morning he sat at his desk staring at a document that was only a quarter finished, eyes burning.

Inspiration arrived in the form of pure desperation.

He summoned the Shadowkhan and Art, handed them the half-written template, and ordered them to finish it.

Then he fell into a sleep so deep it bordered on unconsciousness.

The two figures in borrowed pajamas were left standing in the middle of the room looking thoroughly unimpressed by the situation.

The next afternoon Styx delivered the completed lesson plans exactly on time and returned to his office feeling like a genius.

Evil spirits made excellent research assistants.

He opened the system panel.

— Host: Lethean Styx (Xiao Yun) World: Harry Potter Age: 24 Talent: Wizard Talent Companions: Killer Jason, Clown Art Items: Merlin’s Old Socks, Primary Lottery Tickets ×3 Evil God Points: 14,150 System Evaluation: How do you have the nerve to call yourself an evil god?

— Still venomous, but at least it was evaluating him now.

Progress of a sort.

Fourteen thousand points.

A primary ten-draw cost one thousand.

He also had three unused tickets.

Currently he possessed only Occlumency and the Killing Curse.

Teaching children required more than “Avada Kedavra” and a pair of immortal slashers.

Better to fill the gaps.

“System.

Four primary ten-draws.” A white roulette unfolded in front of him, brighter than the first advanced pool.

The pointer spun.

He remembered the previous disaster—seven “Thanks for Participating,” a pair of Merlin’s Old Socks, and a single golden pity pull.

The system’s affection for consolation prizes remained strong.

First ten-draw: [Thanks for Participating] [Thanks for Participating] [Thanks for Participating] [Thanks for Participating] [Thanks for Participating] [Congratulations: Galleons ×100] [Thanks for Participating] [Thanks for Participating] [Congratulations: Basic Spell Mastery] [Thanks for Participating] Eight blanks, one hundred Galleons, and Basic Spell Mastery.

Not ideal, but the mastery was exactly what he lacked.

He could hardly demonstrate Shadowkhan to first-years and call it the curriculum.

“Continue.” Second ten-draw: [Thanks for Participating] [Congratulations: Episkey Mastery Skill Card] [Thanks for Participating] [Thanks for Participating] [Congratulations: Disarming Charm Mastery Skill Card] [Thanks for Participating] [Thanks for Participating] [Thanks for Participating] [Congratulations: Galleons ×50] [Thanks for Participating] Better.

Episkey for the inevitable injuries.

Expelliarmus—the classic opening move, teachable from year one, rarely permanent.

Useful.

“Third.” The pointer spun again.

[Thanks for Participating] [Thanks for Participating] [Congratulations: Shield Charm Mastery Skill Card] [Thanks for Participating] [Thanks for Participating] [Congratulations: Stunning Spell Mastery Skill Card] [Thanks for Participating] [Congratulations: Impediment Jinx Mastery Skill Card] [Thanks for Participating] [Thanks for Participating] Three solid combat spells.

Protego, Stupefy, Impedimenta.

Together with the Disarming Charm, the first three years of practical content were suddenly viable.

The cards dissolved into light and sank into his chest.

Magic settled into his veins like new wiring.

The spells felt instinctive.

One draw left.

“Fourth.” The white light seemed brighter this time.
