Kafka still had work left to finish, so Li Yedao had no choice but to remain in Silver Wolf’s office.
The two sat across a coffee table, staring at each other in silence.
The room was so quiet that they could hear the printer running at the far end of the hallway.
Silver Wolf secretly glanced at him, then tentatively picked up a game console and waved it.
“Wanna play a few rounds?”
“I don’t bully noobs.”
Li Yedao shook his head.
Silver Wolf fell silent.
Then she smiled.
It was the kind of smile someone made after being struck right in the sore spot and getting so angry they started laughing instead.
“You damn kept man!
I’m biting you to death!”
She sprang out of her chair and pounced like a tiger, tackling Li Yedao into the sofa before sinking her teeth straight into his shoulder.
“Again?!”
Li Yedao hurriedly twisted aside to dodge.
Unfortunately, the sofa was only so big.
There was nowhere to escape.
Silver Wolf’s teeth sank with uncanny precision into the exact same patch of flesh on his shoulder.
“GAH!”
His scream pierced straight through the office partition.
Next door, Kafka’s hand jerked.
Her fountain pen dragged a long streak of ink across the document in front of her.
She abruptly stood, crossed the room in a few strides, and pushed open the door.
On the sofa, the two were tangled together in a complete mess.
Silver Wolf refused to let go of Li Yedao’s shoulder.
Li Yedao shoved at her face with one hand while wildly feeling around between the sofa cushions with the other, desperately searching for some kind of weapon to retaliate with.
Kafka stared at the scene.
The corner of her mouth began to twitch.
Her fist slowly clenched.
“Silver—Wolf!”
Before Silver Wolf could even raise her head to see who had shouted her name, a fist was already rapidly expanding in her field of vision.
“GAH!”
Thud!
Silver Wolf was launched clean off the sofa.
She rolled across the floor two and a half times before finally stopping.
Kafka withdrew her fist.
Then she turned toward Li Yedao.
Her voice instantly rose from freezing point back to normal temperature.
“Are you alright?”
“I-I’m fine.”
Li Yedao swallowed and cautiously glanced at Silver Wolf, who was lying motionless on the floor.
“But Silver Wolf looks…
slightly dead.”
His heart was still pounding.
Kafka always looked so gentle and composed.
How the hell was her punch that terrifying?
One punch sent Silver Wolf flying.
Was she a corporate director or the heavyweight champion of the world?
“I’m not fine!”
Silver Wolf suddenly flipped herself upright from the floor.
Clutching the back of her head, she glared with a face full of grievance and fury.
“Kafka, why did you hit me?!”
Kafka said nothing.
She folded her arms and quietly stared at her.
There was no apology in her eyes.
Not even an intention to explain.
Only a cool, scrutinizing gaze.
Silver Wolf froze.
She looked at Kafka.
Then at Li Yedao, who was still rubbing his shoulder.
A possibility slowly surfaced in her mind.
And the moment it did, a chill ran down her back.
No way.
You too…?
Am I the outsider here?
After reaching that realization, Silver Wolf said nothing.
She silently walked back to the sofa, flopped onto her back, and stared at the ceiling while questioning her entire life.
Li Yedao leaned over and poked her arm with one finger.
“Silver Wolf, are you okay?”
Silver Wolf slapped his hand away.
“Don’t bother me.”
She had clearly put some force into that slap.
There was an obvious element of venting her anger on someone easier to bully.
She couldn’t beat Kafka.
But surely she could still beat him.
That was probably the logic.
Li Yedao smiled.
Not only did he fail to get angry, he sat down beside her instead.
His voice softened considerably.
“Come on, don’t be mad.”
“I’ll play games with you, alright?”
Silver Wolf ignored him.
Li Yedao continued in an utterly sincere tone.
“The reason you couldn’t beat me before was because of lag.”
“It’s perfectly normal to lose to me when your connection is bad.”
“Firefly loses to me too whenever her connection lags, right?”
“Honestly, you’re actually pretty strong.”
Silver Wolf finally pulled her gaze away from the ceiling.
She turned her head and looked at him suspiciously.
“Really?”
Li Yedao nodded vigorously.
His expression was sincere enough to star in a public-service announcement.
That was another matter entirely.
Silver Wolf let out a breath.
Her shoulders visibly relaxed.
“Fine.”
“Since you’re begging me so desperately, I’ll reluctantly play a few rounds with you.”
She reached beneath the coffee table and pulled out two consoles.
One was tossed into Li Yedao’s arms.
The two curled up on the sofas.
Before long, both screens lit up, and the room filled with rapid bursts of game sound effects.
Kafka leaned against the doorframe.
Watching the two instantly return to their usual bickering, chaotic dynamic, a gentle smile appeared on her lips.
Silver Wolf…
Her chest was practically nonexistent.
Her legs were decent, at least.
But overall, she posed almost no threat to Kafka.
And she could conveniently help keep an eye on Li Yedao too.
Practically the perfect partner.
Kafka quietly pulled the door shut.
Her footsteps gradually faded down the hallway.
Neither person inside noticed.
“Holy crap!
What the hell is flashing so brightly?!
Teammate, turn off the laser!”
“Pfft.
Someone actually thinks that’s a visual effect.”
“…Damn it, Silver Wolf!
You’re cheating again!”
“Hahaha!
Yep, I am!
Mad about it?”
Li Yedao’s furious accusations and Silver Wolf’s smug laughter could be heard even through the closed door.
…
…
Three in the afternoon.
Kafka finally finished her work for the day.
In truth, many of the tasks didn’t require her personal involvement.
She only needed to confirm a few critical points.
Kafka pushed open Silver Wolf’s office door.
The game sounds had stopped.
In their place were two sets of slow, even breathing.
Li Yedao and Silver Wolf had each claimed a sofa.
Both were curled up and sleeping deeply.
One of the consoles had slipped beneath the coffee table.
Its screen was still glowing, frozen on the results screen.
Afternoon sunlight filtered through the gaps in the blinds, painting faint streaks of light across their faces.
Kafka made no sound.
She quietly walked over to Li Yedao and bent down.
For a while, she simply studied his sleeping face.
His eyebrows were relaxed.
His breathing was light.
His lips were slightly parted.
Compared to when he was awake, he looked far less guarded.
Kafka continued watching him.
Slowly, the corners of her lips rose.
And little by little…
She leaned closer.
Kafka kissed him.
Li Yedao frowned in his sleep.
His body instinctively tried to roll over, but Kafka gently pressed one hand against his shoulder.
He couldn’t move.
On the sofa beside them, Silver Wolf’s body gave an almost imperceptible twitch.
Then became still again.
Kafka straightened.
She glanced back at Silver Wolf.
Silver Wolf’s eyes were squeezed tightly shut.
Her breathing remained slow and even.
Kafka chuckled softly.
She lightly wiped the corner of her lips with one fingertip, then silently left the office.
The instant the door closed—
Silver Wolf’s eyes snapped open.
She stared at the ceiling, pupils slightly dilated.
Her mouth silently opened and closed like a fish that had just been dragged onto dry land.
What the hell did I just see?!
Kafka secretly kissed Li Yedao?!
On the lips?!
And judging by that glance Kafka gave her before leaving…
She definitely knew Silver Wolf had been pretending to sleep.
Silver Wolf grabbed a—
No.
She grabbed a sofa cushion and pulled it over her face.
Her brain immediately began weighing her options.
Should I tell Firefly about this?
Wait!
Kafka knows I saw everything.
Is she going to silence me?!
The more Silver Wolf thought about it, the more terrified she became.
In her imagination, the story had already skipped from—
Witnessed a secret kiss
—to—
Stuffed into a sack and dumped into a river.
She was so lost in her increasingly horrifying fantasies that she completely failed to notice the pair of eyes calmly watching her through the small window in the office door.
