The tenth person arrived before breakfast.
Hope was standing beside the farmhouse when the outer motion sensor sounded.
A short electronic chirp came from the communications room.
She looked toward the gate.
“Someone’s coming.”
Her uncle stepped out of the barn.
“Another group?”
“I don’t know.”
Hope opened the System.
The property map appeared in her mind.
A single blue marker was moving slowly along the road.
[Human detected.]
Hope watched the marker approach.
No red indicators.
No infected.
She still picked up her weapon.
The world had changed too quickly for assumptions to be safe.
Her uncle noticed.
“Want me to come?”
“Stay here.”
He frowned.
“Hope.”
“I’ll be fine.”
He sighed.
“That’s becoming your favorite answer.”
Hope smiled.
“It happens to be true.”
She walked toward the gate.
The stranger appeared around the bend several minutes later.
A young woman.
Perhaps twenty or twenty-one.
She was carrying a backpack and dragging a small suitcase behind her.
Her clothes were dirty.
Her face was exhausted.
She stopped when she saw the gate.
Hope raised a hand.
“Stop there.”
The woman froze.
“I’m not infected.”
“Do you have a fever?”
“No.”
“Cough?”
“No.”
“Have you been bitten?”
The woman hesitated.
“No.”
Hope studied her.
“What’s your name?”
“Emily.”
“Emily what?”
“Emily Carter.”
“Where are you coming from?”
“Riverton.”
Hope’s expression changed.
“On foot?”
Emily nodded.
“Mostly.”
“How long?”
“Since yesterday.”
Hope looked at the suitcase.
“What happened to your car?”
“It ran out of gas.”
Hope nodded.
That was becoming common.
“Are you alone?”
Emily looked behind her.
“Yes.”
Hope opened the System.
[Individual detected.]
Human: Yes
Virus A: Negative
Agent B: Positive
Awakened: Yes
Hope’s eyes narrowed, she was another awakened person.
“What ability do you have?”
Emily stared.
“How do you know I have one?”
Hope paused.
There were several possible answers.
She chose the simplest.
“I’ve been seeing things.”
Emily looked frightened.
“You’re awakened too.”
It wasn’t a question.
Hope didn’t deny it.
“Maybe.”
Emily took a step backward.
Hope lowered her weapon.
“I’m not going to hurt you.”
“I’ve seen what people are doing.”
“So have I.”
“They’re killing each other.”
“Some are.”
Emily shook her head.
“Not just some.”
Hope studied her.
“Come inside.”
Emily looked toward the gate.
“Why?”
“Because you’re exhausted.”
“And then?”
“We talk.”
Emily hesitated.
Hope quietly waited for her to choose.
Finally, the young woman nodded.
Hope brought Emily into the farmhouse.
Her aunt immediately gave her food.
Emily tried to eat slowly.
She failed.
Hope watched quietly.
“How long since you’ve eaten?”
“Yesterday morning.”
Her aunt put another plate in front of her.
“Then don’t worry about manners.”
Emily nodded gratefully.
Hope sat across from her.
“Tell me what happened.”
Emily swallowed.
“I worked at the Riverton hospital.”
Hope’s expression tightened.
“Which department?”
“Emergency.”
Her aunt stopped moving.
Emily continued.
“It started with people coming in sick.
Fever, confusion, breathing problems.
At first, they weren’t violent.”
“What changed?”
“Some recovered.”
Hope frowned.
“Recovered?”
“Yes.”
“Completely?”
Emily nodded.
“Some did.”
That was important.
Hope leaned forward.
“Then what?”
“The others got worse.”
Emily looked down.
“They started becoming aggressive.
Some attacked staff.
Some attacked other patients.”
“How many?”
“I don’t know.”
“Did the hospital have security?”
“Yes.”
“Enough?”
Emily gave a bitter laugh.
“No.”
Hope understood.
“What happened to the staff?”
“Some left.”
“Some?”
“Some couldn’t.”
Emily’s voice became quieter.
“The people who couldn’t leave…”
She didn’t finish, she didn’t have to.
Hope let the silence remain.
After a moment, Emily continued.
“I left when the emergency power failed.”
“How?”
“Through the service entrance.”
“Anyone with you?”
“No.”
Hope asked Emily to step outside with her, Daniel was already there.
He had recovered considerably from the his journey.
Hope introduced them.
“Daniel, this is Emily.”
Daniel nodded.
“Welcome.”
Emily looked at him.
“You have an ability too?”
Daniel hesitated.
Hope answered.
“Yes.”
Emily looked at Hope.
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
Emily stared at her for several seconds.
Then she laughed softly.
“I thought I was going crazy.”
Hope shook her head.
“You’re not.”
Emily looked at her hands.
“Things started happening yesterday.”
“What kind of things?”
Emily lifted one hand.
A small piece of gravel rose from the ground.
Hope’s eyes widened.
The stone hovered for a second.
Then dropped.
Daniel stared.
“You can do that?”
Emily nodded.
“I think.”
Hope opened the System.
[Ability identified.]
Telekinesis — Level 1
The System appeared.
[Settlement Population: 10]
Hope smiled.
The requirement had been met.
If the other 16 officially join her she will hit 26, or 27 if she counts herself.
[Population threshold reached.]
[Leadership progression available.]
Hope opened the menu.
Settlement Level: 2 — Requirements Complete
Upgrade?
Hope selected yes.
For a moment, nothing happened.
Then the entire settlement seemed to shimmer.
Not physically.
Hope couldn’t see anything changing but she felt it.
A pressure moved through her body.
The System updated.
Settlement Level: 2
Population Capacity: 50
Follower Capacity: 10
Infrastructure Bonus: +5%
Food Production Efficiency: +5%
Defense Efficiency: +5%
Development Points: 2
Hope stared.
“Fifty?”
[Population capacity increased.]
“And ten followers?”
[Correct.]
Hope looked at Emily.
“Interesting.”
Emily raised an eyebrow.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
Hope opened the ability tree.
Two Development Points remained.
She could spend them but she didn’t.
She had learned something important.
Points were valuable.
She didn’t want to spend them simply because she could.
The rest of the morning was spent reorganizing Blackwater.
With ten residents, Hope decided they needed structure.
Not a military hierarchy, just responsibilities.
Her uncle would oversee equipment and repairs.
Her aunt would help manage food, clothing, and household supplies.
Daniel would assist with security.
Emily volunteered to help with medical supplies and care.
The other residents were given jobs based on what they could do.
One had worked construction, another had been a mechanic.
One was a farmer’s son.
and one had experience with electrical systems.
Hope found herself smiling as she listened.
This was what she had wanted.
Not soldiers, people, skills, and knowledge.
A community.
The System seemed to agree.
[Settlement productivity increasing.]
Hope smiled.
She could work with that.
By afternoon, the first problem appeared.
The river bridge.
Hope had always intended to control it.
It was one of the major crossing points nearby.
If Blackwater was going to expand along the river, that bridge would eventually become strategically important.
Unfortunately, it was already occupied.
Hope learned this from a radio transmission.
A local group had established a roadblock.
They were stopping vehicles.
Demanding food, fuel and weapons.
Hope listened to the transmission.
A man’s voice came over the radio.
“…we are maintaining order in the area.
Anyone attempting to cross will be searched.”
Hope frowned.
“Maintaining order.”
Daniel shook his head.
“That’s one word for it.”
“How many?”
“Unknown.”
Hope looked at the map.
The bridge was twelve miles downstream.
The river made it difficult to approach from the west.
The road was the easiest route.
That made the bridge valuable.
Hope marked it.
Strategic Location: Blackwater Bridge
Distance: 12.4 miles
Current Control: Unknown Group
Strategic Value: High
Hope leaned back.
“We need that bridge eventually.”
Daniel nodded.
“Eventually?”
Hope looked at him.
“Yes.”
He smiled.
“You’ve got plans.”
“I always have plans.”
That evening, Hope walked the property alone.
The sun was setting beyond the river.
The water reflected orange and gold.
The greenhouse lights had come on.
The farmhouse windows glowed warmly.
People moved around inside and for the first time, the property looked alive.
Hope opened the settlement screen.
Settlement Level: 2
Population: 10
Infrastructure: 69%
Food Production: 4%
Defense: 26%
Energy Independence: 43%
Development Points: 2
She smiled.
Infrastructure was almost at seventy percent.
Food production was slowly increasing.
Defense had passed the requirement, the settlement was slowly growing.
Then she noticed another statistic.
Affiliated Awakened: 2
Daniel.
Emily.
Hope wondered what would happen when their loyalty increased.
She opened the follower screen.
Follower Capacity: 10
Current Followers: 0
Potential Candidates: 2
Hope selected Daniel.
Daniel Mercer
Ability: Kinetic Redirection
Loyalty: 37%
Contribution: Moderate
Potential Follower Points: 1
Then Emily.
Emily Carter
Ability: Telekinesis
Loyalty: 18%
Contribution: Low
Potential Follower Points: 0
Hope frowned.
So loyalty mattered.
She couldn’t simply declare someone a follower.
They had to genuinely choose her.
That was good, it meant the System wasn’t encouraging slavery or blind obedience.
People had to believe in what she was building.
Hope closed the menu.
She looked toward the farmhouse.
That was something she could respect.
The System appeared again.
[Warning.]
Hope sighed.
“What’s wrong now?”
A map opened.
Several red markers were moving toward Blackwater.
Hope stared.
“How many?”
[Thirty-six hostile entities.]
Her stomach tightened.
“Where?”
The markers appeared on the road.
Then she noticed something else.
The infected weren’t wandering randomly.
They were following the same road the strangers had used earlier.
The same road that led toward the farm.
Hope’s expression hardened.
“Why are they coming here?”
[Unknown.]
“Can they smell us?”
[Unknown.]
“Can they sense awakened individuals?”
[Unknown.]
Hope looked toward the farmhouse.
She had twenty-six people now.
Two awakened.
And thirty-six infected were approaching.
The gate was stronger than before.
The fence was almost complete.
But the numbers were growing.
Hope opened the defense map.
She studied the terrain.
The river, road the fields and the barn.
The greenhouse and the farmhouse.
Then she saw it.
The old drainage ditch running from the road toward the river.
If the infected followed the road, they would reach the gate.
But if she redirected them…
Hope’s eyes narrowed.
She could use the terrain.
She didn’t need to fight every enemy herself.
That was another lesson the System was teaching her.
Power wasn’t only about strength.
It was about preparation.
Hope walked toward the barn.
“Daniel.”
He looked up.
“Yeah?”
“How good are you at pushing things?”
He smiled.
“Better than yesterday.”
“Good.”
Hope looked toward Emily.
“And how much can you lift with that ability?”
Emily shrugged.
“Maybe fifty pounds.”
Hope smiled.
“Then I have a job for both of you.”
Daniel stood.
“What?”
Hope pointed toward the drainage ditch.
“We’re going to build a trap.”
They worked until dark.
At this point, Hope was still hesitant to turn Blackwater into a killing ground.
Instead, they used fencing sections, farm equipment, and barriers to create a funnel.
The infected would be directed away from the main gate and toward a narrow section of ground.
Once contained, they could be eliminated safely.
Daniel’s ability proved surprisingly useful.
He could redirect the force of moving objects.
Emily’s telekinesis was weaker but more precise.
Together, they could move equipment that would have required several people.
Hope watched them work.
The System displayed their progress.
Settlement Defense: 31%
Hope smiled.
“Good.”
Then the motion sensor chirped.
Everyone froze.
Hope turned toward the road.
The first infected appeared.
Then another, then ten, twenty, thirty.
The road filled with them.
Hope looked at the defenses and then at Daniel and finally at Emily.
“Ready?”
Daniel swallowed.
“No.”
Emily shook her head.
“Absolutely not.”
Hope smiled.
“Good.”
She opened the gate controls.
The outer gate remained closed.
The infected approached.
Hope stepped into position.
Her heart was beating faster but she wasn’t afraid.
Not like before.
She had people beside her now.
People with abilities.
People who trusted her.
And for the first time, Hope wasn’t simply reacting to the apocalypse.
She was beginning to control the battlefield.
The first infected reached the outer barrier.
Hope raised her hand.
“Now.”
Daniel released his ability while Emily concentrated.
The barrier shifted.
The infected were forced toward the drainage ditch.
Hope accelerated forward.
The battle for Blackwater had begun.
But this time, Hope wasn’t fighting alone.
