The first wave hit the funnel exactly as Hope had planned.

That was the good news.

The bad news was that there were far more infected behind it than the System had originally estimated.Full novel: Hope – Blackwater — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Hope stood near the edge of the field, watching the creatures stumble toward the temporary barriers.

Their movements were erratic, but their purpose was disturbingly consistent.

Every time one reached a barrier, it pushed against it.

When the obstacle didn’t move, it tried another direction.

They weren’t intelligent but they didn’t give up.

“Daniel!”

“I see them!”

Daniel stood beside the second barrier with both hands extended.

His face was already tense with concentration.

An infected slammed into a metal panel.

Daniel redirected the force.

The panel shifted sideways instead of collapsing.

The creature stumbled.

Emily stepped forward.

She raised one hand.

The loose gravel beneath the infected rose from the ground.

For a moment, Hope simply watched.

Emily’s control had improved, with each use her skill seemed to grow.

The stones flew forward.

Not hard enough to kill, but enough to strike the infected in the legs and knock several of them down.

Hope smiled.

“Good!”

Emily looked surprised.

“That actually worked!”

“Do it again!”

Emily laughed nervously.

“Right!”

Hope accelerated.

The world blurred.

She crossed the field in seconds and reached the nearest infected before it could climb over the barrier.

She struck its shoulder.

It went down.

Another came from her left.

Hope spun.

Her enhanced speed allowed her to react before the creature reached her.

She stepped behind it and shoved.

It crashed into the barrier.

The structure held.

Hope moved again.

The fight became a rhythm.

Contain – Redirect – Strike – Move.

The three awakened abilities worked together better than Hope had expected.

Daniel controlled force.

Emily controlled objects.

Hope controlled the battlefield through speed and strength.

None of them were overwhelmingly powerful.

But together, they were effective.

The System appeared.

[Combat synergy detected.]

Hope smiled.

“What’s that mean?”

[Complementary abilities are increasing tactical efficiency.]

Hope looked at Daniel, then at Emily.

“Looks like we’re getting better.”

Daniel laughed.

“I’ll take that.”

Another group of infected pushed through the outer barrier.

Hope’s smile disappeared.

There were too many.

“Fall back!”

Daniel immediately retreated.

Emily followed behind him.

Hope stayed behind them.

She didn’t want to but someone had to slow the infected.

Hope moved toward the group.

Ten creatures.

Then fifteen.

She accelerated.

Her body reacted faster than her thoughts.

One strike, turn.

Another strike, then duck.

Step.

Push.

She wasn’t trying to destroy them.

She was trying to learn the best way to handle these creatures.

Her muscles burned.

Her breathing became harder.

Then she felt something strange.

The heat inside her chest returned.

Her vision sharpened.

The System appeared.

[Ability progression detected.]

Hope ignored it.

Not now.

She kept moving.

An infected grabbed her jacket.

Hope twisted free.

Another reached for her.

She struck its wrist.

The creature stumbled.

Hope kicked the ground and accelerated backward.

The distance opened.

She breathed hard.

“Come on.” The infected continued forward.

Hope realized she was smiling.

Not because she enjoyed the fight.

Because she finally understood something.

She could do this.

Daniel shouted.

“Hope!”

She turned.

Three infected had broken through another section.

They were heading toward the farmhouse.

Hope moved.

Thirty-two miles per hour.

The System had told her that was her maximum sustained speed.

But Hope pushed harder.

Her legs burned.

She accelerated.

Thirty-five…

Thirty-eight.,, Forty.

The world became a blur.

Hope reached the first infected.

She hit it.

The creature flew sideways.

She turned immediately.

The second one was almost at the barn.

Hope caught it from behind.

She wrapped one arm around its torso.

Then stopped.

For one second, Hope simply held it.

She could feel its weight, its strength.

The strange unnatural tension in its muscles.

Then Hope threw it.

The creature landed twenty feet away.

Danial finished it.

The third was almost through the barn doors.

Hope ran, she reached it just before it entered.

The creature turned.

Hope struck.

It fell.

She stood there breathing hard.

The System appeared.

[Speed threshold exceeded.]

Hope stared.

“What?”

[Maximum sustained speed increased.]

A new notification appeared.

Enhanced Speed — Level 2

Hope smiled.

She had just become faster.

Without spending a Development Point.

The ability had evolved through use.

That was important.

She looked at the road.

More infected were still coming.

But Hope was no longer wondering whether she could survive.

She was wondering how much stronger she could become.

The final infected fell nearly forty minutes later.

Silence returned to Blackwater.

Hope stood in the field.

Her clothes were dirty.

Her hair was damp with sweat.

Her arms were aching but she was standing.

Daniel walked toward her.

“Are you okay?”

Hope nodded.

“Yeah.”

Emily approached.

“That was insane.”

Hope laughed.

“It was.”

Daniel looked toward the road.

“How many?”

Hope checked the System.

Hostile entities remaining: 0

“Thirty-six.”

Daniel whistled.

“Thirty-six.”

Emily looked at Hope.

“You took down most of them.”

Hope shook her head.

“No.”

She pointed toward the barriers.

“We did.”

Daniel smiled, Emily did too.

Hope realized how important that distinction was.

She hadn’t defeated thirty-six infected by herself.

Her settlement had.

That mattered.

The System opened.

[Defense event completed.]

[Settlement successfully defended.]

[Experience acquired.]

[Development Points: +4]

Hope stared.

Four points.

That brought her total to six.

Then another message appeared.

[Settlement Defense milestone achieved.]

[Defense: 34%]

[Settlement Stability increased.]

Hope looked at the screen.

Then something else caught her attention.

[Follower candidate progression.]

She opened the menu.

Daniel’s loyalty had increased.

Daniel Mercer

Loyalty: 52%

Contribution: High

Follower Potential: 1 Point

Emily had also changed.

Emily Carter

Loyalty: 36%

Contribution: Moderate

Follower Potential: 1 Point

Hope frowned.

“So I get a point from each when they become followers?”

[Correct.]

“Do I have to ask them?”

[No.]

“Then how does it happen?”

[Individual choice.]

Hope nodded.

That was exactly how she wanted it.

She didn’t want followers because she ordered them to be.

She wanted people who believed in what she was building.

The next morning, when it finally arrived brought an unexpected problem.

The river.

Hope stood on the bank with Daniel and Emily.

Something had changed.

The water level was higher.

Not dramatically but noticeably.

Hope checked the System.

[River conditions changing.]

“Why?”

[Upstream water management failure detected.]

Daniel looked toward the river.

“Could that be dangerous?”

“Maybe.”

Hope studied the map.

The river connected everything.

That was one of the reasons she had chosen Blackwater.

Natural defense.

Water supply.

Transportation.

Eventually, expansion.

But the river could also become a problem.

If bridges were blocked, the river would divide communities.

If it flooded, it could damage farmland.

And if the zombies eventually learned to swim…

Hope stopped.

She didn’t like that thought.

“How long before the water stabilizes?”

[Unknown.]

“Can you predict flooding?”

[Yes.]

Hope waited.

[Current probability: 7%.]

She relaxed.

Only seven percent.

Then the System updated.

[Probability increasing.]

Hope frowned.

“To what?”

[18%.]

She looked toward the water.

Something was happening upstream.

By noon, the radio had answers.

A dam several miles upstream had lost partial control.

Authorities were attempting to stabilize it.

Hope listened carefully.

If they failed, the river could rise several feet.

That could flood low-lying areas.

Hope immediately checked her property.

The farm sat high enough.

The greenhouse and the barn was safe.

The farmhouse was safe.

But one of the storage buildings was not.

She marked it.

“We need to move the supplies.”

Her uncle nodded.

“How much?”

“Everything.”

They developed a plan to work through the afternoon.

Boxes.

Tools.

Fuel.

Food.

Medical supplies.

Anything valuable was moved to higher ground.

Hope used the System’s inventory to organize everything.

She still hadn’t fully understood how useful it was.

She could store certain objects in inventory slots.

The limitation was that she couldn’t simply absorb entire buildings.

Large equipment required physical loading.

But smaller items could be stored instantly.

That saved hours.

Her aunt watched her put a heavy box into inventory.

“How did you do that?”

Hope froze.

“I…”

Her aunt waited.

Hope finally smiled.

“One of the abilities.”

Her aunt nodded.

“Okay.”

No further explanation.

Hope appreciated that.

That evening, the river rose another foot.

Hope stood on the porch.

The System displayed the current settlement statistics.

Settlement Level: 2

Population: 10

Infrastructure: 76%

Food Production: 7%

Defense: 34%

Energy Independence: 49%

Affiliated Awakened: 3

Hope frowned.

“Three?”

She checked the list.

Daniel.

Emily.

Then herself.

The System considered Hope part of the settlement’s awakened population.

That made sense.

She opened the follower menu.

Follower Capacity: 10

Followers: 0

Potential Followers: 2

She smiled.

Daniel was above fifty percent loyalty.

Emily was getting closer.

Hope wondered what would happen when they crossed the threshold.

She didn’t have to wait long.

Daniel approached from the yard.

“Hope?”

“Yeah?”

“I want to stay.”

Hope looked at him.

“I know.”

“No.” He shook his head.

“I mean permanently.”

Hope smiled.

“Are you sure?”

Daniel nodded.

“I’ve spent the last few days trying to find my family.

I still don’t know where they are.”

Hope’s expression softened.

“I’m sorry.”

“But I’m not going to spend the rest of my life running.”

He looked around.

“You built something here.”

Hope nodded.

“I’m trying.”

“I want to help.”

The System appeared.

[Follower Candidate: Daniel Mercer]

[Loyalty threshold achieved.]

[Follower status available.]

Hope looked at Daniel.

“You understand what that means?”

“Not really.”

“Neither do I.”

Daniel laughed.

“Good enough.”

Hope selected Accept.

The System responded.

[Follower established.]

[Daniel Mercer has pledged allegiance to the Blackwater Settlement.]

[Follower Point gained: 1]

Hope felt something change.

Not physically.

But the System became clearer.

More responsive.

The ability tree opened.

Six Development Points.

One Follower Point.

A new option appeared.

Follower Enhancement

Cost: 1 Follower Point

Effect: Increase selected follower’s ability development potential.

Hope stared.

Then looked at Daniel.

She had a choice, she could make herself stronger or make one of her people stronger.

Hope smiled.

“Daniel.”

“Yeah?”

“I think we’re going to see what your ability can really do.”
