[Chapter Size: 2900 Words.]
Third Person POV
North, 95 AC.
Little Jon woke up with a start in his bed, finally seeing the ceiling he recognized very well.
He knew he was in his room. He heard someone groaning beside him and turned his head, finding his mother standing on a small stool beside his bed, leaning against the wall with her eyes closed.
"Mom," he said carefully.
The woman blinked a few times before seeing him there. Jon saw her eyes shine with relief and sadness. Immediately, he was grabbed by her, as she moved onto the bed without any warning while hugging him.
"Are you alright, son?" she said while squeezing him.
Jon looked quite surprised by her reaction. "Mom, is everything okay?" he asked carefully, feeling some pain in his body, as if a wagon with horses had run over him.
"I was so afraid, son. So afraid that you wouldn't wake up again..." Rowena said, crushing Jon while she cried.
Jon was still a little disoriented, but he accepted his mother's hug. He still couldn't understand what had happened, until he started remembering the forest, the hunt, Lord Stark and Lord Tallhart talking while his father tracked a moose.
That was until a giant bear appeared and simply attacked them.
Jon's eyes widened. "Ghost!" he said, his voice failing.
His mother seemed to tremble even more when she heard that.
"Ghost... I saw him being attacked. Where is he?" the boy demanded immediately, shifting to get out of his mother's embrace as she released him, despite her reluctance.
"He's in the storage shed. The wolf is still alive."
Jon barely heard the rest. He simply left the bed behind and rushed outside while his mother shouted for him.
Jon stepped outside still feeling his body aching, but went straight to the shed where the wolf should be. He saw his father and his brother in the vegetable garden looking toward Rowena's shouts from the house and then at the boy running out the door.
"Jon!" his father shouted.
Jon felt relieved to see that his father was alive and seemed well, but he soon ignored him and moved forward.
When he entered the place, he found his wolf lying on a bed of hay. Jon stood there frozen at the entrance, looking at the wolf. He could feel Ghost awake. He could feel his breathing rising and falling at the side of his belly.
He approached with light steps, but lost. He began to feel what Ghost was feeling at that moment. There was fear, numbness, weakness... and pain.
"No..." Jon's eyes widened as they began to tear up. He moved closer until he stopped in front of the wolf. There were still marks; his wounds were open.
Ghost's eyes were also open, showing that he was awake and had certainly already heard him. He moved his head to look up, seeing Jon there.
His emerald-green eyes fixed on the wolf's scarlet-red eyes. Jon could feel everything Ghost was feeling at that moment.
He was dying...
Small tears began to fall from his eyes. "No... no... this can't be happening," he said as he crouched beside his wolf.
"No, please. You can't be dying," Jon said fearfully, while Ghost seemed to let out a small whimper.
Jon grabbed his fur carefully, but still squeezing it a little as tears poured like a waterfall from his eyes. He could feel footsteps approaching the place, but he didn't care. His face was already ruined by all the tears his eyes could shed.
"Please… don't do this to me," he began to stutter and whimper.
He wasn't exactly speaking to Ghost. Maybe he was speaking to no one. But the pain was in his voice.
"Jon…" his father said, approaching soon after with a worried look. Sam, his brother, came behind them, hiding behind their mother.
But Jon didn't answer. He only kept looking at the wolf, placing his head on the hay as well, on the same line as the direwolf.
Tears splashed onto the hay as he murmured words no one could hear.
"Jon…" His father gently touched the boy's shoulder, but he didn't respond.
He simply ran his hand through the fur on Ghost's foreleg and brought it up to the wolf's head, pressing his ear down while petting the wolf that kept staring at him the entire time.
He was dying...
"Jon, please, son…"
"Leave me with him," Jon said in a hard tone.
His father tried again. "Jon, we have to check on you too. You fainted."
"I'm fine! Leave me alone! Let me stay with him!" he said, whining. "He's scared… he's dying…," he sniffled, his nose as stuffed as his eyes.
His father didn't insist. He simply withdrew his hand, while Rowena touched her husband's arm, shaking her head as she looked sadly at their son.
"Let's leave him alone for now," she said.
Even though he didn't seem to agree with that idea at all, her husband nodded.
"Mom…" little Sam tried to say.
But she gently pushed him outside.
"Let's leave your brother alone. He's sad because his friend is sick," she said, although she looked at Jon, who completely ignored them, his eyes fixed on the wolf.
The same green eyes as Rowena's felt far too much pity for her son.
Meanwhile, Jon didn't even see them leaving. He simply stayed there with Ghost, squeezing the side of his head with small affectionate gestures.
The wolf only whimpered with a small pain and cry.
"You saved me, Ghost… it was supposed to be me… I could have died…," Jon cried.
Ghost remained silent the entire time.
Jon didn't know how long he stayed there. He didn't care about anything anymore. All he did was remain there the whole time.
"Son…" his mother's voice echoed beside him. Jon turned his gaze with an empty face. His mother's heart tightened when she saw that.
"Jon, eat something," she said, bringing some small fruits to him.
She took a small stool from the side and placed it in front of him, setting down a basket with some fruit.
Jon, with difficulty, moved closer without saying anything, picking up a fruit as if he weren't even there, simply making that automatic motion.
Rowena crouched beside him while she began to run her hand through his hair in a sad manner.
"Jon…" she said carefully, looking just as broken as her son when she saw him in that state. Ghost was also a member of the family and had proven to be one long ago. She was sad for him, but even more disturbed by the state of her son facing this situation.
Her son would not deal very well with the wolf's death...
"He's dying, Mom," he said in an empty tone. "I can feel it. Ghost is dying."
Rowena even withdrew her hands a little before pulling him to her chest.
"I'm so sorry, son. I'm so sorry this happened. We're all sad."
"Isn't there any way to save him?" Jon said, looking at his mother for the first time with a glimpse of hope, hoping she would say there was a solution.
But she pressed her lips together. "Lord Stark sent a soldier to Lord Cerwyn's castle. If Ghost survives two more days, a maester from that castle will arrive here," she said.
Jon didn't seem excited about that at all.
"In two days he'll already be dead, Mom. He lost too much blood," Jon cried.
"I'm sorry, son. I know he was your best friend. Sam keeps crying over him too... but we can't do anything else..."
"How long did I sleep?" he asked carefully.
"Two days since you arrived. Ghost has been like this," she said.
She had cried too. According to Garren, Ghost had thrown himself at the bear before it could attack or even kill Jon. Because if it had been Jon in Ghost's place, the bear would have simply crushed the boy with its teeth in a quick but painful death.
"We thought you had been hurt, but no one found anything, and yet you stayed unconscious for so long..." she said carefully.
Jon simply nodded, trying to remember the scene. He had looked at the bear when it hurt his wolf. He had looked with anger, an anger he had never felt before.
And, for a moment, he felt something strange… as if he were outside his own body.
'I will kill you.' His voice seemed to echo inside the bear's head.
With those words, something strange happened. The bear simply got frightened and ran away, while Jon lost consciousness.
He didn't understand what had happened, but he should be glad that his father and the others hadn't died. The only ones dead were some men… and maybe Ghost. A somewhat bitter relief, in his opinion, with Ghost falling into that state...
Jon ate the pieces of fruit his mother had brought a little better, but he was still sad.
"I'm going to start preparing the meal. Stay with Ghost as long as you want, but come back home before nightfall and come eat with us...", his mother asked.
Jon nodded as he watched her stand up and leave, but not before giving her son one more look and disappearing.
Jon stayed there eating the fruit. He tried to offer some to Ghost, but it seemed useless. Even so, he still gave him water. His mother had left a container there.
The wolf was weak, but he managed to get some liquid inside with his tongue each time it dripped onto it.
That was already a good sign.
Jon heard someone at the door and saw his little brother Sam approaching carefully.
"Will he be okay?" Sam asked with sadness and shyness.
Jon didn't answer. He simply let him come close enough to hug him.
The lack of an answer immediately made little Sam begin to cry in his brother's arms.
Jon held him even tighter while refusing to give an answer. He could feel that Ghost would not survive like that. If help would only come in two days, then it was useless.
"Go back home, Sam. You don't need to see this. Help Mom. I'll come back soon to have dinner with you and Dad," Jon murmured.
The boy nodded while still crying, wiping his nose and eyes.
Jon heard him walking away shortly after. He loved his little brother and didn't have the courage to answer that question, even though his silence was already, by itself, an answer.
Jon looked at Ghost once more, touching his head.
He needed a miracle.
Instinctively, he left that place. He went to where the heart tree stood. The small tree was there, standing still, swaying with the wind in the late afternoon, while Jon knelt before it and touched it carefully, closing his eyes and leaning his neck forward as he pressed his forehead against the tree.
"Please… save him. Just as you did with Sam… help him. I beg you, old gods..." Jon whimpered.
It was in that very place that he had cried and prayed to the old gods for his little brother to be well from a winter sickness that would not leave his brother alone...
He stayed there for a while, but never received an answer.
Jon simply sighed, discouraged, as he walked back toward the shed.
'Come at night.' A voice suddenly appeared in an enigmatic way.
Jon immediately looked back, startled. The only thing he could see was the tree and the forest behind it. There was no one else there.
'Come at night, when the moon is at the highest point in the starry sky...', the voice resurfaced.
"Who are you?" the boy asked with some fear.
He received no answer, besides the sound of the wind echoing through the leaves.
Jon stayed there for a while looking and observing, but there was no further response. Then he turned carefully and went back to Ghost.
When it was close to nightfall, his father called him, and he had no choice but to step away from Ghost, before hugging his head where there were no wounds.
He hesitated to leave the little wolf, but still went out and went to have dinner with his family.
Dinner had not been lively at all. Everyone was quite down.
Sam cried a lot after he came back.
Garren said nothing. He only hoped that his brother Roman would come with his family tomorrow to try to help Jon, even knowing that perhaps the wolf would not make it past tomorrow.
Rowena was also downcast and looked at her eldest son with sadness. The way he was attached to his wolf, almost as if Jon had a part of himself dying with Ghost... That was far too worrying for her.
They ate their meat stew in silence.
Jon went to his bed without saying anything. He simply stared at the ceiling with an empty gaze. He did not sleep.
Those words still seemed to be heard the whole time.
'Come when the moon is at the highest point of the starry sky...' Jon didn't understand. The voice sounded slightly feminine, but strange… it seemed to come from the trees themselves.
He stayed there for a while, until he decided to take a look at the moon. He opened the window carefully so as not to wake his parents. He managed to climb up using a small stool that his mother used to sit beside his bed when he had been unconscious.
Jon then jumped out the window and landed silently on the hard dirt ground.
He moved a little away from the house, where he couldn't see the moon, and finally saw it.
His instincts had been right about leaving at that moment. With the full moon, he was not completely exposed to total darkness, he could see the outlines of the house with a faint light from the sky.
He quickly went behind the house, seeing the red tree that seemed to glow faintly. It was not as dark as any other vegetation in the place.
Jon approached carefully.
Maybe the old gods were willing to help him.
He moved closer slowly, looking at the tree and making the same movement as before: he placed his hands on it and pressed his forehead against the trunk.
"I'm here. Whoever called me here… please, save Ghost! I beg you!" he asked with childish sincerity.
Jon did not receive a verbal answer, but suddenly he felt everything shift.
He saw himself in the middle of an area with a huge expanse of water. The water crashed against the yellow sand.
Jon looked at it in surprise.
He had never seen anything like it.
'Is this the sea?' he wondered. He had already heard people say they had seen the sea on the western coast of the North, that waters poisonous to drink stretched as far as the eyes could see.
There was an infinite amount of water.
Jon's eyes widened.
But he realized he had no control over his own body.
Wherever he was, it was very hot. He was also wearing shining armor...
Jon then saw his head move.
That was when he was startled to see a huge black creature on one side of that place. It looked weakened and wounded. There were injuries across its body and one of its eyes had been cut out, still bleeding, staining one whole side of its face.
Jon had never seen a creature like that.
It was gigantic, the size of what should be a castle. Much bigger than his house. Maybe the size of the entire village. Jon would be swallowed easily by it... It was a kind of lizard... but with wings and immense!
The creature looked at him.
But there was no anger in its eyes.
Even so, Jon did not spend much time looking at that black creature. His gaze turned to another figure that was closer to him.
It was a creature just like the black one, but white, or it should be, because it wore shining armor that Jon didn't even know existed! The creature must have been five times the length of his house! And it had metal all over its body; not even Lord Stark's soldiers wore armor like that!
It looked at him with its blue eyes.
Jon saw his other 'self' approach one of the creature's legs, where there was a lot of blood. So much blood that Jon, witnessing it, felt a little terrified.
He saw himself removing one of the armor plates, revealing a bite wound... with the plate itself crushed against the injury. Jon suspected the black creature had done this, which made no sense when it was on the other side of that place, in a submissive manner...
Then he raised his hand. A green glow appeared from it, beginning to heal the dragon's leg.
Jon watched that, astonished.
He saw his body first healing the white creature. Then he went to the black creature, which accepted his touch and began to be healed, starting with the eye and the entire body burned and full of holes from spears.
Suddenly, everything went dark.
Darkness.
