HotD – Jon Arctic!

[Chapter Size: 2600 Words.]

Third Person POV

North, 95 AC.

When Jon woke up the next day, he was startled when he heard his parents shouting for him from a distance... He didn't seem to be sleeping in his room.

There were hurried footsteps approaching. Jon blinked as he felt something licking his face, making him look to the side.

Then he... saw his wolf. Ghost.

Ghost was there, staring at him while he continued fiercely licking his face.

Jon looked at him in a daze.

The wolf was not lying dying on the hay like he had witnessed yesterday... He was standing, though with his head turned toward Jon sleeping... on the hay...

"Ghost... you...", he couldn't even finish the sentence.

Ghost was now standing and looked healthy. Jon could no longer feel those emotions of his life fading away, as if the wolf's life force were disappearing.

"Jon!" A voice roared from the entrance with footsteps running desperately toward the place, but died in the next moment as Jon stood up from the pile of straw where Ghost had once been lying.

Jon looked at the sight of his father standing at the entrance with wide eyes, while Ghost was there, still beside the boy, licking his arm after leaving his face.

Jon didn't waste time. Ignoring his father, he grabbed Ghost's head, which was almost the size of his five-day-old body.

"Ghost, are you alright?" Jon murmured carefully.

Ghost continued licking his arms in response. Jon didn't waste time and hugged him tightly as tears began to come out of his eyes.

"You're alright! You're healed!" he shouted while crying, feeling the wolf's healthy body again...

The wolf stayed there, letting himself be hugged by his human friend. Ghost placed his two paws on both sides of Jon and pulled him close again, while wagging his tail from side to side, but that didn't bother Jon. He felt that he was being hugged by the direwolf now. The sensation wasn't bad at all.

"Garren, what is happening? Is Jon there?" The voice came from Rowena as she approached running, until she stopped beside Garren when she witnessed the scene.

"What?!" She immediately let out a startled cry. "By the gods..." She trembled and took a step forward, approaching Jon and Ghost.

"He has no wounds... he is healed...", Rowena said with her voice failing.

Ghost didn't have any wounds on his body. He was perfectly fine. There was no scar or fur stained with open injuries. All of them had simply disappeared, leaving only small gaps in the wolf's coat, something that should grow back with time...

"How is that possible?" Rowena asked, turning back to the husband beside her, who had been silent the entire time.

Garren shook his head. "I don't know." Then he turned his gaze back to his son.

"Jon, what happened?" his father asked. Jon finally released the wolf's head to look at them.

"I don't know," Jon murmured.

"How do you not know? When we went to your room this morning, you were no longer there. The window was open!", said Garren, with concern and a bit of anger.

"I... don't know...", Jon kept repeating.

He tried to organize the hazy memories. He only remembered leaving the room and going, as the voice had instructed, to the heart tree when the moon was at its highest point.

He remembered seeing the moon shining and leaning against the tree, as he always did when he went to pray.

In the next moment, he had some visions.

Strange visions.

Then he woke up in the hay, where Ghost was.

Jon didn't even remember the part where he simply got up from the tree and followed his way back to where the wolf was. He also didn't remember simply hugging Ghost and falling asleep there.

While he slept with his arms around the wolf, a light had begun to shine between them, healing Ghost throughout the entire night.

Jon tried to say the same thing, but suddenly he felt his strength leaving him. His body was exhausted from having used magic all night, without knowing it, and he simply fainted in front of his parents.

They ran to him urgently. Ghost immediately began sniffing him, trying to see if he was alright.

"Take him inside. Whatever is happening, let him rest. We'll have better answers when he wakes up", said Garren, looking frightened at his son being carried by his wife.

Sam arrived at that moment and immediately stared at his older brother held in their mother's arms, while Ghost appeared right behind them, following and continuing to sniff Jon.

Ghost was so tall he didn't even need to raise his head; he simply sniffed Jon in Rowena's arms.

"Calm down, Ghost", she said, trying to make him not look so insistent. "He seems to be fine, just exhausted", she said, despite being quite worried.

"Jon… Ghost…?!", Sam shouted, not understanding anything.

Rowena turned to her younger son. "Ghost is fine. Somehow, we found him… your brother was sleeping with him tonight. I'm going to take him to the room, and I doubt Ghost will leave his side. So I would like you to stay with your brother", said Rowena.

Sam nodded quickly and followed his mother.

Garren looked for a while at the hay where Ghost had been, and then turned toward the house and went inside. Upon entering the eldest son's room, he looked at the boy lying on his small bed. Ghost was there standing, alternating between sniffing Jon and licking him, while Rowena petted the giant wolf and checked the marks on the fur where the bites from the giant bear had once been.

"Garren… this is not… this should not be possible", Rowena said carefully.

Garren wanted to laugh. "Nothing about our son is usually normal, Rowena. Whatever happened for the wolf to heal… Jon did this", said Garren with a serious look.

There was no doubt that his son had always been special. But healing an animal on the brink of death… how dangerous would that be if other people discovered it?!

Not even they understood what was actually happening with Jon. Only these strange things that happened around him.

Rowena also looked at him with concern.

Jon's birth might have been by chance… although they had never understood where that sacred tree came from, which shone when Jon was born, at the same time it completely disappeared and no one ever saw it in 5 years...

But there was also his way of seeing animals and connecting with them easily. The encounter with the direwolf of the legends that no one had seen for hundreds of years, which came directly to him. The strange sacred tree growing behind their backyard.

And now this mysterious healing.

"No one can know about this", Garren said with a serious tone to his wife.

"But how would that happen? Garren, the maester should arrive tomorrow, shouldn't he?" Rowena replied.

"Then we hide that Ghost had died and bury him. We cannot allow others to know that, somehow, our son healed him miraculously", said Garren.

Rowena nodded, worried.

"I'll try to find that Stark soldier on the road. If I manage to meet him with the maester first, we can say the wolf died", he finally said.

The wolf did not leave Jon's room the entire day. Garren asked Rowena to bring food to him. Sam even came to question a few things, but Garren asked his son to remain silent about how Ghost had been healed so suddenly, saying that it was a miracle from the gods. But if other people heard about it... people might want to harm them if they knew.

Sam nodded. He didn't care much about those things, he was quite happy that Ghost wasn't going to die.

Garren's brother and his family arrived. Sara was pregnant again and would give birth in about five or six moons. Her belly was already visibly large.

"Garren!", his brother said immediately, getting out of the wagon while approaching Jon's father.

"How are the boys? How is that big wolf?" he asked after a hug.

Garren pressed his lips when he saw Sara approaching with Mari. The girl looked teary, thinking the wolf was still dying.

"If you want to know, come with me", Garren only said as he led Ronan to the room.

"I can't believe Lord Stark appeared here...", Ronan said with a careful tone.

But he stopped speaking when he saw Jon lying on the bed, while Sam was sitting on Rowena's lap petting the wolf, who was close to them and watching the unconscious Jon.

The same wolf that Ronan had heard someone talking about at home, who had been almost dead in the shed beside the house, was now there, looking perfectly fine...

"Ghost!", Mari shouted immediately, running toward the wolf and passing by the two adults.

"I thought he was dying!", Ronan said with an irritated tone, looking at Garren. Had his brother tricked him?

Sara arrived at that moment beside her husband, her gaze going to Rowena while ignoring her daughter Mari jumping on the wolf, and she looked at Jon, seeing him lying on the bed.

"Is he still unconscious? Is he hurt?" she asked, turning to Garren.

Garren could still see Ronan's questioning look.

"Jon is unconscious like he was after being attacked... he woke up yesterday." Garren said to Sara and turned back to his brother. "The wolf... I didn't lie... he was dying until tonight. Today he woke up healed, with my son sleeping beside him in the shed...", Garren said.

"What do you mean by that?" Ronan asked, wanting answers.

Garren just took a deep breath, repeating again with more clarity. "Listen, brother. I didn't lie when I said he was dying and that I needed your help. Jon woke up yesterday and he was completely devastated. I have never seen my son so sad... it was heartbreaking. But somehow, during the night he escaped from the room. When we woke up, he was in the hay where Ghost had been injured." He paused briefly before continuing.

"Ghost was standing... healed. And Jon woke up dazed before simply fainting in front of us."

Garren looked at his brother and then at Sara. "I don't know what is happening. I swear I don't know how Jon manages to do these things. But I know that if someone finds out..."

He didn't finish the sentence.

Ronan crossed his arms. "Yes. Your wolf was dying and, suddenly, he appeared healed. Some might say it is a sign from the gods... but at the same time, Jon is involved in this. And they might say it was him." He looked skeptical as he raised an eyebrow, not that anyone could blame him.

"My husband is not lying... Ronan..." Rowena said, sitting on the bed for her brother-in-law. Ronan looked at her and saw that her green eyes carried the truth of what Garren had just said.

"Yes, my son did something that no one can explain... and you can imagine the trouble that could be. I need to protect my son", said Garren, this was the tone of a very worried father.

Ronan nodded after a moment, finally believing and imagining what could happen if the rumor of a miraculous child spread. Jon was already known for his strangeness: his appearance and his giant wolf as a companion already drew far too much attention.

Lord Stark had been here a few days ago... Why would the supreme lord of the North be visiting a family in the middle of nowhere, in the North?

"What do you need me to do, brother?" Ronan asked immediately.

"I want you to stay and take care of them. I will go to the road. I want to find the soldier of Lord Stark who is coming together with the maester who was supposed to arrive here tomorrow. I'll try to send him away."

"I've heard those men are quite curious. If they knew about what happened, they would probably come running here." Ronan said, already understanding what his brother wanted.

"Alright. I'll do it." he finally said.

Garren sighed in relief when his brother agreed immediately. He went to his horse, mounted it, took some supplies to last at least two days of travel and moved forward, while Ronan and Sara took care of Rowena and her two sons.

It was near nightfall when Garren finally found the Stark soldier who had said he was heading toward Cerwyn, but he was alone.

"Hunter? You came to me?" the soldier asked, narrowing his eyes.

"Sorry about that... I came to say that the maester would no longer be necessary," Garren said carefully.

But he moved to the side and didn't see any maester or anything. The soldier just snorted.

"Don't worry about it. The maester couldn't come. There's a certain epidemic with a strange disease affecting the skin in the Cerwyn and Hornwood territories, and he cannot leave. Unfortunately we won't be able to help your wolf, hunter," said the soldier. He wasn't rude, but he wasn't kind either.

Even so, Garren tried not to show a smile. "I understand..."

"In any case he wouldn't survive anyway." the soldier added, and Garren felt relieved hearing that.

"Thank you for letting me know. The direwolf will already be dead by tomorrow morning," said Garren.

"What a pity. The maester seemed quite interested in seeing a live direwolf... or even a dead one. He said he really wanted to see it and that even the Citadel would pay a good amount to have the carcass or even the bones," the soldier commented thoughtfully.

Garren just shivered. "I see. I will think about it and I'm leaving."

He didn't want to stay any closer to that man. Having to lie to him for too long would seem too suspicious.

The soldier simply nodded, and both went their separate ways.

Garren camped somewhere and returned home early in the morning, near midday. Rowena was still with her unconscious son, while Ronan commented that Ghost had not left Jon for a single moment.

But the boy did not seem to be in danger.

Mari and Sam were playing with Ghost, who most of the time stayed beside Jon, leaving only a few times to eat, drink, and even play with the other children who would not leave him alone.

"I saw the gaps in his fur, my gods, Garren. Ghost… the wolf should be dead," Ronan murmured when they sat down to talk.

Garren nodded. "I know that very well, brother."

"Isn't it obvious?" Sara appeared bringing some soup and placed it beside the bed where Rowena was sitting, she also needed to eat.

She looked at Jon carefully. "This child… I always said he would be blessed," she said with a serious tone, before turning her gaze back to her husband.

"When I am ready to give birth, I want to give birth to our next child in this place," she said immediately.

That made Ronan scratch his head awkwardly, while Garren laughed.

But he did not deny it.

His eyes returned to his son as the smile faded.

Whatever Jon did to heal Ghost… he hoped the boy would be alright.

Meanwhile, the boy seemed to be having strange dreams again, with an unknown land… and with a different "me".
